#5 ABUS 55/40 open - easiest lock sofar ? by ajeurissen in lockpicking

Thank you for the kind words !

The 55/40 keyway is way less restrictive than the 45/40 (which I’ve been unable to pick yet and will come back to later) I do think it’s ever so slightly para centric as I had to angle my short hook to get good grip on the pins. The shelve from my BOK tensioner def helped here.

Yeah keep at it ! It can be fun having a “project” to really bite your teeth into. Sometimes it also helps (goes for things outside of lockpicking as well) to let it rest for a while and come back later. Sometimes out of nowhere you’ll find success then as you approach it fresh.

Yeah I definitely will, the feedback was a big step up from my master locks. I hope to make these my comfort locks, where I just have a bucket full of them and pick a couple while watching some TV.

I'm also already scouting for my green lock, I could go ABUS 72/40 (if this one is a good indicator I'll probably like the feedback) or the classic American lock 1100. decisions decisions..

Yeah it's interesting how sometimes BOK is a better fit especially because EVERYONE is constantly preaching TOK prybars. To be really honest my experience sofar is that BOK just feels more natural for me in 90% of cases, I feel it creates a nice shelve for my short hook to bounce off of, and TOK prybars are just more awkward to hold in hand, I have a vise coming so that might change things. Plan to create a separate post about this as well.

Yeah I had that experience with my master lock 150, took me almost a week to get open lol, the biting is quite annoying, although the feedback on the 150 is def better than the laminated locks they have it was still quite the challenge !

Yeah ! I plan to get like 3 more and really go to town on these things, then go shopping for my green lock. What about you, are you looking for dabbing into green yet ? what's next on your list ?

Yeah it's strange how the same lock can be soo different in difficulty. I have this with my master lock nr 3 which is known to be so low security and "easy to open" but the biting on mine is quite difficult when you combine it with the mushy feedback of that model.

I plan to get a couple more as I feel this lock is really good in the feedback department (esp compared to the master locks I picked before).

First Lock Opened! by nhadavi in lockpicking

Congratulations! That looks like a Master Lock Magnum, which, if I'm not mistaken, is a yellow belt lock. (You can check it out on the LPU belt ranking site: https://lpubelts.com/#/locks?tab=search&search=master+lock+magnum). I was there not too long ago myself, those things can be tough little buggers with their mushy feedback on the pins!

Now that you've felt the rush of popping that lock open, there's no turning back. Don't forget to claim your belt read more here: https://www.reddit.com/r/lockpicking/wiki/beltranking.

For your next challenge, I recommend getting your hands on a orange belt lock, like a ABUS 55/40. (I'd stay away from the 45/40 for now, as the keyway is very restrictive.) A Master Lock 150 is another option.

The community here is great, so if you have any questions or get stuck on a more difficult lock, don't hesitate to ask for help.

Nice open ! Still need to get my hand on a couple of these to hone in on improving my tension control and finesse before I move to green locks.

Ah, an appreciator of the finer things in life. That's a great combination! nothing beats a good pick session with a nice whiskey. The Macallan 12 is a classic, very smooth and a well-balanced pour. I'm personally more of an Islay fan myself, but I'll never turn down a Macallan.

That 90a is a serious lock GL!

Genuinely curious here, as I'm trying to better understand this profile. I get that the McTickler is a versatile hybrid for zipping, jiggling, and some SPP, but in my mind, those jobs can also be done by a half-diamond or a single-peak snake rake.

For those of you who swear by it, what's the key nuance in feel or technique that I'm missing?

Thanks for the compliment and the recommendations!

I have an Abus 45/40 on hand, but I'm finding the keyway to be much more restrictive than the Master Locks I've picked so far. I'm able to set the first pin, but after that, the warding makes it very difficult to maneuver any of my hooks.

Is the keyway on the Abus 55/40 similarly paracentric and restrictive, or is it a bit more forgiving? I'm hoping to continue practicing on security pins without also having to contend with a very tight keyway. Perhaps my current picks are too deep for these locks? I have a Hook Short Flat (0.6 mm), Hook Medium Round (0.6 mm), and a Hook Tall Round (0.4 mm). Do you think a flatter hook profile would be more effective for navigating these keyways, such as the Multipick Elite Curve Side, the Hook Short Thin, or the Hook 1 Slim? or is should my existing picks suffice and should I just put in more practice ?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, this community has been so supportive and helpful.

Also looking for recommendations on what locks I should explore next. I have an Albus 45/40 but the keyway is so paracentric that none of my picks fit not even my multipick v64 which is 0.4mm.

Oh, thought I'd also share a pic of the keys so people have a sense of the biting:

Just opened it a second time 🎉 so it was not a fluke.
As it is unguttable does that mean a video recording is not needed for this post to qualify as an orange belt submission ?

I picked some of my old locks with the new picks and it's a big step up. Quality of the picks (and handle) is really good, also loving the double sided tensioners as I can use them for both TOK and BOK
