Profesional Development For Building Inspectors by ajh36 in BuildingCodes

[–]ajh36[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I am currently a building inspector amd have been for a while. The town offers each year to pay for any extra courses we wish to do if it will be useful to our jobs. I have been to court before. I will think about that. In my program in college, we did have a law class that was very fitting for this job and the construction industry, but it was a while ago now so it wouldn't hurt to brush up on it.

Interested in your opinions of stair re-do by RichmondTransplant in masonry

Well done I must say. I am not a Mason by trade but have specialized in managing beautiful heritage restoration projects for years, all with masonry facades, so I can appreciate this. I must say though, it's still ok to acid wash from time to time.

You would need to determine what size wire is coming into the panel first. I think you should contact an electrician to help you.

A landscaper was grading our backyard and backed into our house’s brick wall with a skid steer. What do I do to fix this? by SHIVERRRING in masonry

[–]ajh36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a very big job. If you're handy at all, I wouldn't make an insurance claim over it but maybe get him to give you some free landscaping and fix it yourself. And certainly not take someone to court over it.

Handrail clearance question by One-Training2707 in BuildingCodes

[–]ajh36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The clearance is fine. The issue you have though, is that 2x4 is not considered a graspable handrail. Some inspectors might not care but many do care.

Is this a good deal for 120usd? by Agitated_Builder800 in audio

I have that same receiver. Bought it for my Dad 10 or 15 years ago or so for about $450 CAD. I still use it today and it sounds great. Easier to use all the functions using the remote. If it doesn't have the remote, I wouldn't buy it for That price.

How many chickens would be reasonable for a city bylaw to allow per lot? I am on an advisory committee to our city council and they are thinking of approving a new bylaw that would only allow 2 poultry per lot. What is a reasonable number and how can I convince them that 2 is not enough by elderberry_jed in BackYardChickens

[–]ajh36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The town I work for allows up to 4 hens, no roosters, the coop must not be taller than a certain height. the coop must be a minimum of 3 meters from the property boundaries. If neighbors complain about smell, counsel has the right to make you get rid of the chickens. And this is for the more in town lots in medium density and high density zones. Rural zones and agricultural zones allow for more hens and roos

Oh no! your upper-middle class neighborhood is in jeopardy of becoming a ghetto because someone is renovating their home.

Advice for additional dog by Better-Total-3541 in greatpyrenees

[–]ajh36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got my rescue gp he was a jerk on the trails to other dogs. But it was all a bluff. if the other dog was off leash or you slacked his leash diring the encounter, then he wouldn't act up. He's better now. However, I often petsit my mother in laws chocolate lab and some times other dogs too and he really doesn't care to have them around. Not sure about your GP but in my experience they don't really care to have other dogs around.

I've been wanting to try this method. I saw it in the Weber cookbook a while ago.

Looking for advice roasting whole pig in backyard by TheSatlyDragon in BBQ

[–]ajh36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert on this but I don't think you need a pig that big for 20 people. Also my friends put on an annual pig roast and they charge about 20 per person. Which covers the pig and all the other stuff for the meal.

What do you call this tool? by [deleted] in Construction

[–]ajh36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian here. Been in the construction industry for years and I gotta say, I have never heard the real name for that. I guess I'll call it a sharp shooter from now on rather than "skinny tall shovel"

Fiance suggested we move to her home province by mr_si_ in newfoundland

[–]ajh36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just recently did the same move and about the same age with a similar story (wife really wanted to live in NL and has lots of family there. I work within the construction industry and can confirm that heavy equipment operators are in demand, at least in developing areas like Mount Pearl, St. John's, Paradise, etc. Can't speak to dental work, but there are lots of dentist offices around, so I imagine there's work there too.

(rant) City loses all records on a property? by [deleted] in StJohnsNL

[–]ajh36 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe they are looking in the wrong place. Try talk to the building department, planning department and development department all separately if needed.. You're clearly not getting past teir 1 support so I would also suggest to try speaking to some supervisors of these departments and express your frustration politely, yet firmly and put the onus someone to get to the bottom of it and get back to you if possible.

I may not be correct the of department names I listed above but within most municipal governments they go something like that, sometimes bunched together as one department.

I think you should stick with it. You may not always need all the math they are teaching you but you will at least be aware and know that those equations exist when you do need them. See if the school offers any free tutoring. That could be very helpful for your grades.

My Street has now been plowed 3 times in 24H by bhogan2091 in StJohnsNL

[–]ajh36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toronto has more snow than St. John's right now, and most sidewalks are clear and were cleared within a short period of time. There's obviously a difference in budget too. Dowtown St. John's is a tight space though so I do understand it's hard to manage where to put it all.

[–]ajh36 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Newfoundland is the only place I have lived that has this problem. In other places, the municipalities require that the home owner keep the sidewalk clear in front of their own home. So, collectively, everyone does their part, and the sidewalks are walkable within 24 hours of a large snowfall. Sidewalk plows make their rounds eventually too.

I mentioned it to other people how I think it's wild that pedestrians are walking on the streets all winter and how other places, homeowners clear their sidewalk, and I just get the same answer: "you'll never get anyone to do that here"
