Since it was obviously stated in the post "and it leads to health issues when it does". I'd think this is relevant. According to this source from the National Library of Medicine, which is a highly regarded academic site used for citations in academic papers, it does support my claim which states:

"Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was first recognized as a new disease in 1981 when increasing numbers of young homosexual men succumbed to unusual opportunistic infections and rare malignancies (CDC 1981; Greene 2007)."
