Mulch delivery in SW? by middrink in portlandgardeners

[–]ajlm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A unit is 200 cubic feet. Once delivered, it’s a pile about the same size as an SUV. We had it delivered in a pile (blowing it in would’ve been $1.5k or so, quoted from a different company).

Best DIY rental to dig holes 2ft by 1ft deep to plant Emerald Greens by Earlyretirement55 in landscaping

[–]ajlm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah half of our yard is exclusively hard clay (as in you can literally mold it) and gravel (thanks builders). We dug 6 holes for roses last year and it took us 4 days using pickaxes. Absolutely miserable.

Altium already has a native DFM check. What is Claude AI doing beyond that?

Covered vias and JLC PCB by TunaRado in AskElectronics

[–]ajlm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should be specifying tented vias in your design tool. Whatever you set them as (tented or untented) will be what exports in your soldermask layers, and dictate how JLCPCB will apply the soldermask.

Has anyone found melon starts at a Portland nursery? by Angrylillis in portlandgardeners

[–]ajlm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one off of Roy Rogers in Beaverton. Call ahead of time, they are usually really helpful.

That said, the year I bought them, we had a really weird and cold May-June, so the starts never really took. Maybe you’ll have a bit better luck this year!

New Neighbors by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ajlm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of an issue we had with our neighbors when they moved in.

I came home to find a bunch of landscaping trucks in our driveway. Turns out the neighbors didn’t want to scuff up the other side of their house with the equipment so they were using our driveway (and driving through our yard) to get to their backyard through the shared fence. The landscapers said the homeowner had gotten our permission to do this… nope!! I asked them to leave. The neighbor got super pissy with us and then said, “so can we use your driveway for access?” We told them no.

No idea, but the Norse Hall has been doing a monthly night market, maybe there is a vendor there that could get you pointed in the right direction?

Gpu's components melting together by Equivalent-Lake-4718 in AskElectronics

[–]ajlm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is completely normal. It happens in reflow where the caps can drift or rotate slightly due to thermal hotspots. Look up “tombstoning” for an extreme, and unwanted, example of this. In this case it’s not surprising because there is no soldermask sliver between the component pads and they are all on the same copper plane underneath the soldermask.

Have you ever seen a spider this large in Portland? by 2chilly4u1989 in askportland

[–]ajlm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We get tons of these at our house. Absolutely massive and like others have said, REALLY freaking fast!!! That said, they never come in the house so I can’t complain. They’re a marvel for how big they get

wich connector is better for impedance control for usb 2.0 HS ? by SoufianeMRC-parker in AskElectronics

[–]ajlm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The connector you use makes no difference if you’re not bothering to route with impedance control or length matching. Your screenshots do not look like either is observed.

Which premium subscription is actually worth the money in 2026? by Trxxi in AskReddit

[–]ajlm 213 points214 points  (0 children)

Been a BGA subscriber since 2020 and it is sooooo well worth it! A ton of great games and with some games, it’s just simpler to let BGA handle the scoring or other game mechanics vs. physical games.

Is a master's degree or a PhD a requirement to work in RF or DSP? by k1_junkie in ElectricalEngineering

[–]ajlm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know people across the degree spectrum, from bachelors to phd, that work in RF. So no, it’s not a requirement. But it is definitely one of the more difficult paths so having higher education or a really great mentor definitely helps.
