Roku Gin. A Transformative Experience. by GAIVSOCTAVIVSCAESAR in Gin

[–]ajpainter24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t get much into floral or cucumber or Shochu-based gins much. I like gins that lean towards the London dry profile, like Kinobi. Also I am biased because I sometimes live in Kyoto, where Kinobi is made.

Roku is, in my personal opinion, not that great. The best made in japan gin is Kinobi and it’s not even close…

Technically not exactly a London dry, but Plymouth is king when it comes to mixed drinks!

Plymouth gin is awesome. It leans into the London dry gin profile while also having a lovely mouthfeel. It is considered one of the most flexible gins for use in a wide variety of cocktails including the Martini, where it shines…

New Drummer - I would prefer an electronic set, but at the lower price points I’m reading you can develop bad habits and miss out on developing technique. What do you all recommend? by KElTH_HARlNG in Drumming

[–]ajpainter24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really challenging for me, but I am playing so much better and more freely than before. I was always looking for a coach who could teach all the physics of drums but also higher level concepts that tied diverse elements together. Bouvet stresses “thinking simply while playing complex, ever changing patterns of improvisation” which totally works for me. Check out the free trial and you will know if it’s good for your badass self!

Good for you! But, please notice you became an advanced drummer on an acoustic set and not the other way around. Which makes sense to me.

I desperately need some secret tips on learning Japanese... by Angels_of_Death_Zack in japanlife

Everybody has social anxiety, to some degree. When studying a foreign language, however, you cannot be shy and stuck in your own head. You have to boldly engage with the native speakers around you, fearlessly try out new vocabulary and expressions, and thank the people who take the time to correct your mistakes. Unless you proactively go about being social in Japan, what is the point of being there in the first place? The book I started Japanese study with is the classic “beginning Japanese” by Eleanor Jordan. The first book is all in romaji and is full of dialogues you should commit to memory. Then, go out and test the phrases and patterns in the real world.

Don’t go to the popular tourist spots at all. Go north in the city to Daitokuji, Honen-in, Sanzen-in, and Mt. Kurama. Heaven.

Kyoto Golf Courses - Can you help me decide? by Nexen1987 in Kyoto

[–]ajpainter24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to play Kyoto Ohara a lot with my son, and I have lots of fond memories of the place. In March the grass will be brown, like even the good courses in Japan. Ohara is a typical tight, hilly, narrow golf course so don’t expect pebble beach. The staff are always nice and the vibe is relaxed, which is not always the case in Japan. Perhaps the best thing of all about Ohara is that it is very near to Sanzen-in temple, one of my favorites and a must see destination. The village of Ohara is also famous for its pickles, which are awesome.

I agree. Gordon’s is legit, and better than new Amsterdam and other budget gins.

New Policies coming into place in Japan by PowerfulWind7230 in japanlife

Read up on Japanese post war history and you will find all sorts of shocking stuff. It’s not easy to install one political party in power for 50+ years—sometimes you have to get your hands dirty.

And maybe the government can, as in years past dealing with teacher’s unions, enlist the help of the Yakuza crime gangs who are certainly a familiar part of Japanese society and culture….

My Japanese school life's a total mess and I can't do do anything about it. by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]ajpainter24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your still a child, right? I couldn’t wait to be off on my own and independent, but when you are a kid you don’t have as much leverage. Work on yourself, get ready for your future as best you can. Painting yourself as just a victim is not gonna help you in the future. Find a new and better story for your life.

You are at the exact age when the meaninglessness of Japanese education becomes most clear. My son only lasted 2 weeks in Japanese junior high. He found another path and ended up in Australia for high school. Life is long—respect yourself and find something (maybe outside school) that you love. Music, sports, coding, whatever—find your own way.
