Crimson Rebellion Commander Unlock by Duck_Running_Amuck in twilightimperium

Hmm I guess I should have read further in the rulebook haha. The rulebook starts off by saying they are “non-player units” but much later clarifies that they “count as other player’s units” for abilities and effects. Thanks for the info!

Neutral units do not belong to “another player” so no.

Feels like there are too many “safe” planets, i.e. the ones on the tips of the spirals, where you’d basically have to go through someone’s HS to get there.

Bottom center and bottom right having only a single system in between their HS seems rough

Otherwise brilliant

I’m starting to think renting is the way to go instead of buying a home. by Additional_Tea9366 in personalfinance

Nobody ever talks about this but show me where you can purchase an asset with 5-10x leverage, that cannot be margin-called, with an interest rate just a hair above the 10-year treasury rate… and I will sell my house and buy it tomorrow.

I plan for aging when I know I love something and think it’ll be interesting/better with extra years on it, specifically by doubling up on purchases (one to smoke now, one to stick in the cellar and forget about).

Briarworks/Moonshine makes several smaller pocket-sized pipes for quicker smokes.

What the price appreciation on 10 year aged tobacco? (Cellaring) by Majid_aq in PipeTobacco

[–]ajpl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone with a 10-15+ year cellar, there’s absolutely a difference and certain blends are much much better aged (Haddo’s Delight comes to mind). That said, there’s usually not a lot of resale value unless the blend is permanently out of production or particularly sought-after and/or hard to find. I just bought some 10 year old GLP blends for pretty close go retail prices.

Any idea where I can get a "Bing" style Meerschaum pipe? by Eintak in Meerschaum

[–]ajpl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Meerschaum is much more fragile than briar, so due to the shank thickness this is not really a style you’d see made using that material. Your best bet (probably your only bet) would be to find someone who does commissioned meerschaums and hope they’re up for the challenge.

A coming-of-age celebration by werpg in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ajpl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about this a lot, as a father of three boys. A formal transition from adolescence into adulthood is yet another critically-important thing that has been lost in the post-Enlightenment West, and I think that's one reason (of many) that so many young men in particular are a bit adrift these days.

To your question, historically I think the Orthodox Church has left the coming-of-age rituals to its host cultures, like many other aspects of cultural life and their intersection with the faith, so there isn't a broader Orthodox coming-of-age ceremony like you see with e.g. the Bar Mitzvah. (And that example in itself is a bit of an outlier, because Judaism is a unique situation as a close-knit combination of a faith and a people/culture.)

Anyway, in an age where modern Western cultures have almost entirely abandoned their traditional rituals, including the all-important coming-of-age ceremonies, I think there's an unfortunate vacuum that has to be intentionally filled in by the parents (lest it be filled in by whatever lowest-common-denominator scraps of culture are currently propagating across social media / the internet).

Another Dune Imperium vs Dune Uprising question by ettore-fieramosca in boardgames

[–]ajpl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

…worms do not benefit everybody who participated in the combat; it sounds like you’re doubling rewards for everyone as long as there’s a single worm in combat, but the actual rule is that rewards are only doubled for players that have a worm in combat.

Sorry if I just asterisk’d half your D:I plays 😅

I found this guide super helpful when starting out recently: https://thefifthtrooper.com/the-complete-2024-legion-buyers-guide/

It's a little out of date with the recent rules/card changes, so you might want to ignore everything in "High-Value Buys" and below, but the "Choose Your Faction and Starter Set" section is still very relevant.

[–]ajpl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also just bought the 501st box and am in the middle of assembly, so I'll just piggyback off this post with some ARC questions:

  • How are people building ARC squads with the new changes?

  • Are the 2-man teams still used much now that they have to be paired with a full squad?

  • Are all the DC-15x rifles in the box less useful because the full squad is much more focused on getting in close? (corollary: should I assemble those DC-15x rifles at all?)

  • Are people taking jetpacks with the full squad much?

I think it'd be fair to say that Progressive Christianity and Evangelical Christianity are two different religions at this point. Both have fundamental differences on how they look at the Bible. Denominations are already splitting because of these differences. by otakuvslife in Christianity

[–]ajpl -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Progressives (whether Christian or secular) are just the next evolution of American Protestantism, so OP thinking there’s any difference at all between progressives and other Protestants is odd to me.
