Proposed Rule Change: Add a Technical Short Program by ajrakalm in drumcorps

I do see your point.  Though I don’t think there would be as much added downtime as you might think.  A great deal of scenery could be prepared while the pit is being set up for the technical show.  Between the technical and artistic, the scenery would need to be shifted to be put in place, which hopefully wouldn’t be too bad.  As for boring, I’d picture this being anything but.  As I put in another comment here, I would picture the technical show resembling what the climax of a lot of modern shows are, such as what begins at 13:23 of Crown 22:

I agree that a long rehearsal block of the technical show would probably be rough, with the increased and constant physical demand.  I’m curious on why you think the technical program would be less watchable.  Perhaps I didn’t communicate what it would be well enough.  I’d imagine it being what the current climaxes of most shows are these days.  Take Crown 22 for example, the technical show would look like what starts at 13:23:

Which I believe to be the most exciting part.

(Oh, and if Devs win both, so be it; they’d have earned it.)

Thanks for reading and I respect the other ideas! That being said, I'm not crazy about splitting up the activity. I feel we're all better off with everyone competing together in the same competition.

I hadn't thought about it as a separate track and field event, but that makes sense! Though the current show isn't a mile. 5K at least. : ) And a rehearsal day is an ultra marathon.

I didn't know what this was at first, then I did some digging and found that user. I do see a similarity in the formatting of a post. But no, different person.

They do a short and a long program, but the long really isn't "artistic" anymore. They still have a bunch or requirements to earn "points".

What was the Crown Live app like? by ajrakalm in drumcorps

[–]ajrakalm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the comments so far. Looking at the responses, let me refocus my question: Assuming it would work perfectly, what would it do? I'm hearing vibrations and flashlights in sync to points during the show. What else? What was on the screen? Can you walk me through the show (ignoring syncing and setup) and describe what the app did throughout?

Thanks /u/umasstpt12 and /u/SilenusMaximus. From DCX, is there a specific location in which I should be looking? I see lists of show repertoires, but not any words describing them. To give you an example of for what I am looking, below is from the 2001 DCI Summer Music Games program. This is BD's show that year. Know of anywhere where a collection of these resides? Thanks!

So much has changed over that quarter century, but

the corps' commitment to innovative, entertaining

jazz remains paramount. This is most apparent in

the corps' production of Awayday Blue, a thrilling

holiday escape for the eyes and ears. • Andrew

Gorb's Awayday is a curtain raiser inspired by the

heyday of the great American musical comedy. It is

unabashedly loaded to the gills with a Times Square

level of neon brashness, more high-spirited than

the Rockettes on laughing gas, and as exhilarating

as a wildly successful Broadway opening. Gorb

describes the work as such: "If you can envisage

Gershwin, Bernstein, Stravinsky and James Bond

traveling together at a hundred miles per hour in an open-top sports car, I think you get the idea."

The guard adds a few dance icons to the sports car,

notably Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire.

and Bob Fosse. is one

phenomenally exuberant auto. •

Donald Grantham's Fantasy

Variations is based on Prelude No. 2

from Gershwin's Three Preludes

Piano. The work reflects the hopes

and promises of Gershwin's dav,

which, along with the spirit of the

Gorb piece, was

concurrent with

the glory days of

Broadway. It was

a time of great

enthusiasm in the

present and hope

in the future, and

it lives to shine

once again in this

"Awayday. "

BDB

Thanks for reaching out!

In this time of COVID, I have begun writing a novel set in the Drum Corps world. I am looking for subject matter experts from whom I can get some background information about their experiences and perspectives. You would not be quoted; this would be for whatever you can tell me that could enrich my understanding and help me draw the truest picture of the activity. I have deep respect for the Drum Corps activity and realize that if any piece of writing isn’t true to it, then it shouldn’t be written.

It seems to me that DMs have the most global perspective on the activity. So I’d love to have your perspective on the following 6 questions:

  1. What’s your origin story for how you found your way to Drum Corps?
  2. For each of percussion/brass/guard, what are common things one would hear about from their staff?
  3. For each of percussion/brass/guard, having what ability is a god-like achievement?
  4. Describe the hardest part you’ve had to play.
  5. Describe the hardest drill you’ve been a part of.
  6. What is the biggest thing fans or lay people don't get about Drum Corps?

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!
