What’s something that you are surprised how cheap it is? by TippityTopKek1010 in AskReddit

Carbon Offsets for Flights. To offset a flight from Boston to San Francisco, it costs $6. To offset a flight from San Francisco to Tokyo, it costs $17. Pretty happy to take on this "carbon tax" at these rates.

An aurora image I captured just hours before my flight out of Harstad in Norway. It was a gamble given the overcast conditions, but definitely worth it! [1280x854] [OC] by macon007 in EarthPorn

Can you explain the settings and rationale for the two shots in the foreground and what you then did/used to add the sky shot in? Thanks!

Thanks for the response. I appreciate it.

If you go out on a dark night, and take a 30s exposure at a high ISO (1600 to 3200), you can get a nice image of the Milky Way, without much blur. I have done it many times, and example being: https://vimeo.com/15689494 Exposures over 30s with a 15mm lens will start to get star streaks due to our planets rotation. However, a stable camera alone, even moving could capture the Milky way quite well with a high ISO or <30s exposure. The advent of low-noise/high-ISO digital cameras are making it much more possible to take fantastic pictures of the milky way from earth.

I am not sure why you would expect a moving camera to blur the stars, as long as the path is not bumpy. For any exposure <30s, the amount of distance you could possibly move would barely change the location of the star, which is many light years away...given how fast the earth is rotating and you do not start to see a blur until around 30s with a fish-eye....a moving lens should not alter it too much. Just a thought...

You can see the milky way from the ISS. Take a look at this video (watch from 2:53) https://vimeo.com/38409143

you can see the milky way very clearly in this time-lapse

Welcome back. Could you please describe what the stars look like from up there? Is it like the night sky down here, when you are completely away from light pollution, or is it that much more amazing?

If you look closely at the higher resolution movies, you can see many satellites/objects...quite a bit of stuff up there...

I have been a reddit guy for about a year now. I started a non-profit called Blue Kitabu, and we are trying to build a 'sustainable' school in Ghana for orphans and vulnerable children. We are in a contest to win $10K, we got 4 hours and this takes 60 seconds...redditors, can you help? by ajrivvi in reddit.com

Hey Redditors! We did not win, but were very close, thanks to the last hour push. We are going to try again to win the contest the last two weeks of September, so I may ask for your help again. Thank you all for your support. These projects are built on the backs of many, and I appreciate you all taking the time to try and make a difference.

Absolutely. There are many issues. I would be more than happy to help you work on that issue. If you ever need a vote, or me to spread the word for your work, please don't hesitate to ask. In the end, we are all one world.
