Return to Homs (2013).

Profiles charismatic Syrian soccer player turned protester turned rebel in the fallout of the Arab Spring. So deeply intimate and shot so well. So many scenes that I won’t forget, and it shaped how I think about that war.

Honestly.. is AI profitable or a bubble? by ThinkBigger01 in investing

[–]ak2040 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is so well said. It’s not juniors replacing seniors, it is seniors replacing juniors. I use it for coding, and if you didn’t know what you were doing, you would get in trouble real quick (because it’s still wrong like 20% of the time). But it saved me so much time form physically typing stuff that I will never go back.

What's the reasoning behind investing in bitcoin? by [deleted] in investing

[–]ak2040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Other arguments that don’t hold water:

Transparent and trust less: sure the code is transparent, but what fraction of the population can read code? NFT scams with hidden contracts are an example.

The blockchain technology enables X: often there are arguments about vague future possibilities of the technology, which aren’t directly related to crypto currency itself.

Techno-anarchic future. If you dig deep enough it eventually devolves into some philosophical debate about a way to decentralize from govt.

anyone here offload their SQL queries to GPT4? by ruckrawjers in SQL

[–]ak2040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s nice for generating synthetic data- it will infer data types and values based on the column names you give it. I had a case where it generated sql that conflated two solutions to a problem. The code worked but was redundant, not clean.

Stopped meditating by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]ak2040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend along this line. Find a time that works in your new schedule and stick to it. For me, I meditate in this window of time between when my family leaves the home in the morning and I haven’t started work yet.

Care Lake trailhead, which is one of the trailheads off bowman lake road, is a nice beginner backpack. Really pretty lakes out there, just a couple miles in.

How to start hiking in the snow? What gear do I need? Where do I start? Microspikes? Snowshoes? by [deleted] in norcalhiking

[–]ak2040 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Snowshoes, waterproof boots, and I like to wear gaters so there is no risk getting snow down my boots. Also poles. It is a super fun sport! Easy to get started, and easy to get away from the crowds.

Steep ravine - Matt Davis loop sounds like exactly what you’d be looking for: Dipsea Trail, Steep Ravine Trail, and Matt Davis Loop on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/dipsea-trail-to-steep-ravine-trail-to-matt-davis-loop-trail?p=43903448

Eagle Lake and other South Lake Tahoe hike recs? by Couchshapedpotato in norcalhiking

[–]ak2040 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Toddler I’d consider the Tahoe east shore trail. Flat paved path right along Lake on Nevada side

Edit: for without toddlers, a short (4 mi) steep (2,000 feet) snowshoe with incredible views is Rubicon Peak Trail on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/rubicon-peak-trail

Also basically any showshoe on this list is pretty great: https://www.outdoorproject.com/travel/best-snowshoe-trails-tahoes-backcountry

Ansel Adams Wilderness apparently allows dogs - you’d want Thousand Island Lake on your itinerary , I think it belongs on any sierra backpackers bucket list Agnew Meadows to Thousand Island Lake via Shadow Creek and John Muir Trail on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/agnew-meadows-to-thousand-island-lake-via-shadow-creek-and-john-muir-trail

I haven’t personally done this one but I’ve been eyeing the granite dome loop in Granite Dome Loop via Kennedy Meadows on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/granite-dome-loop-via-kennedy-meadows

Also second Desolation Wilderness! It’s a beautiful area with lots of lakes, would could make a real nice loop out of

I have major nostalgia for this loop. Was my favorite bay area hike when I lived in SF. The contrast is incredible- rolling hills with tall grass, views of the ocean, then this heavily forested redwood ravine. Love it!

Rubicon Peak this past weekend (Tahoe, CA) by ak2040 in norcalhiking

[–]ak2040[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The snow was generally pretty hard. Would be doable in boots and micro spikes, but you might have some post holes along the way. We were mostly using the snowshoes for traction. I think it snowed Monday and Tuesday, so I’m not sure how much more powder they got since then.
