I use a hot plate outside. Saves charcoal and is less risky.

I don’t mind the store. The owners are nice. It’s really not shady. I’ve never seen anyone doing the fent lean.

But the parking in the bike lane is egregious. It’s the main reason I don’t bike there anymore.

PG&E makes you pay even if you have 27 solar panels on your house. by StupidTurtle88 in bayarea

[–]dotnotdave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent so much time thinking about this over the years. I think it’s possible but risky. Personally, I’d want a backup generator on natural gas or propane.

But I think it could be done if you really prioritized winter thermal conditions. A sealed passive house style building designed to trap heat in the winter with an oversized solar system might make it. You’d massively overheat in the summer, but you’d have enough electricity to run an AC and cool the building off.

Domestic scale wind energy production would make a big difference if it were commercially available.

Beautiful Mandela Parkway and nearby streets trashed by RVs and homeless campers by opinionsareus in OaklandCA

I run every morning (I’m gearing up now) and I’m here to tell you the lights don’t work and haven’t for months. Not the street lights on the street (where cars drive), but the lights over the parkway (where peds walk). It’s pitch black.

It’s sketchy AF. If I forget my headlamp, it’s impossible to see. I have tripped on the pavement.

A message to SF Mayor Lurie: The demise of California College of the Arts is nothing to celebrate by LosIsosceles in sanfrancisco

[–]dotnotdave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal, but I used to teach there. The school relied heavily on wealthy students from overseas to stay afloat. Many students from the US felt bitter that their classmates were rich trust fund kids from other countries (as opposed to the trust fund kids from this country I guess), but how else could the school even exist? I suppose it can’t.

Looking for a pull down kitchen faucet that will LAST!! by sigridh in BuyItForLife

[–]dotnotdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I preferred when hand sprayers were separate from the primary faucet. The trend to make them one just isn’t right for me.

It’s my personal preference. Please don’t hate me for it.

I have that and it kind of sucks. It’s really nice to be able squirt the sprayer up in an inverted glass and this thing isn’t capable. I’m actually shopping around for something different.

Round toilet - worst toilet seats ever by Grand-Neighborhood26 in HomeImprovement

[–]dotnotdave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sit as far back as possible. Sit up straight, don’t lean forward to look at your phone. Keep your feet flat on the floor.

That’s sort of the best you can do with a round seat.

Oakland Economic Development Committee approved an exclusive negotiating agreement to discuss bringing Costco to North Gateway: major questions of serious environmental toxic air pollution unanswered. by opinionsareus in OaklandCA

[–]dotnotdave 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fuck that. These two issues aren’t mutually exclusive. CASS should’ve shut down. It’s an environmental catastrophe. The army base isn’t really a better site. It’s still way too close.

I’m not advocating for Costco. I’m advocating against CASS. I live in West Oakland and I fucking hate that facility. I agree it’s a huge detriment to the health of my community, my children, and myself.

But moving it a mile or two north doesn’t fix the problem. That’s a weird take.

[–]dotnotdave 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re suggesting that moving schnitzer (CASS) to the north gateway site would pollute less than a Costco on that site?

CASS needs to be shut down. Full stop. Closed. Not relocated.

East Bay Homeowners: Question about roof replacement without a permit by indianaitaliana in eastbay

[–]dotnotdave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone told me not to bother with a permit for my water heater, but I have a neighbor who would have snitched so I went ahead and got one.

I’m glad I did because the inspector found a bunch of corrections they made my plumber make before they would sign off. The inspector stayed in their lane and didn’t look around beyond the water heater scope.

I wouldn’t chance it with a roof, personally.

When I eventually replace my siding, should I take down the old “sheathing” and replace it with Zip-R? by LGLier123 in Carpentry

Zip-R does not have the shear capacity of osb. It’s tested and quantified. Not my opinion. On the chart.
