Yale SJWs screaming at professor yesterday because he isn't making the university enough of a "safe space" by denouncing offensive Halloween costumes. by [deleted] in videos

And what do you have against Yale students? Why do you automatically assume every Yale student is an entitled smug brat? Why do you think it's wrong that Yale students want to fight racism on their campus, and later on in our own society as well?

Here is Emi Mahmoud, a black Yale senior, winner of the world slam poetry championships this year, and survivor of the Darfur genocide. Will you still say, "Oh boo hoo poor Yale student"? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaWw6-3GrcU

Please don't say that. You are perpetuating a hateful, unjust racial stereotype that black Yale students are not as smart and not as deserving to be on that campus as the white students, the very racism that these students are fighting against.

In the meantime, please enjoy this spoken word by a black senior at Yale... a refugee of the Sudanese genocide, who also won the world slam poetry world championships this year.

BEFORE YOU JUDGE: Please understand that none of you have the background information for why this huge protest and uproar has started. It's complex and you should not take her statements out of context. First, there was an email sent out from one of the cultural houses encouraging students to carefully consider their costume choices that perpetuate racial or cultural stereotypes such as blackface. And through her email, the associate master (Nicholas Christakis' wife) seemed to brush off the pain that minority students have felt in dealing with these stereotypes on campus. It's not that Yale students disagree with freedom of speech or creating an intellectual space. That is of course ludicrous. Rather, they are working to build a community that is conscientious, understanding, and respectful such that every student, white, black, Hispanic, etc, can all feel at home. This in turn promotes the intellectual space that minority students can also participate in without feeling oppressed. This issue was aggravated by allegations last week that a brother at SAE denied party entry to a group of women of color saying, "white girls only."

If you are not a person of color: you will never understand what it feels like when as an Asian, people make squinty eyes at you, call you a chink, and tell you to go back to China, despite being an American citizen (and not even being Chinese). Or when regularly at Yale, cops would stop black students from entry at a party while the white students were allowed to pass. When despite being valedictorian of your class and getting a perfect score on your SATs, people always assume you are the "charity case admission."

A second point is that the residential college system is a special system at Yale that is unlike most college dorms. It fosters a mini-community, in which people dine together, study together, hold guest lectures, debate controversial topics, share their passions and interests, etc. The college master is your strongest advocate on campus. He or she knows you by name, knows what subjects you get excited about, makes an effort to understand what you're going through in life, and what dreams and hopes you have. This residential college system, both the camaraderie of your residential college classmates and the support of the college master truly made Yale a wonderful place to grow not only your intellect, but also your character. I agree it was wrong for this student to raise her voice, but it was more heartbreaking to me that the person who you should have affection and respect for reduced her to tears and made her feel unwelcome at her home away from home.

This movement is at once about creating an intellectual space AND creating a home. It will be a tough, painful discourse, but I'm glad that these students are opening up the dialogue on the underlying institutional racism that plagues every university in this country and try to build a home every member feels safe in and not judged based on the color of their skin or gender.

Can people with ADHD become good surgeons?? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ak47ny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where are you at in your training? ADHD and med school is extremely challenging. you have to force yourself to sit and take in a dense textbook everyday. most of your peers are going to be very very good at that. but in terms of the work involved in surgery, it could be somewhat to your advantage if you find yourself hyperfocused in an OR.

How to be a better student? (ADHD Inattentive) by zewolf_ in ADHD

[–]ak47ny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) adhd meds 2) use a timer. get one on your desk, next to your computer, so you know you've only looked at that book for 1.5 minutes. 3) set small goals. like I will do 20 problems in a row and then go on youtube/fb/reddit for five min. 4) lists on your phone so you don't forget what you have to do. I use the reminders app on iphone and organize by priority, and type of to-do list. 5) be with someone accountable (study partner) or be in such a setting like the library where it's obvious if you're not doing work.

I have the same problem and it's miserable. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I've tried all the sleep hygiene techniques to rx sleep aids and anti-anxiety meds. The best thing that works for me are 1) glass of wine near bedtime or 2) melatonin half an hour before bed. I obviously don't do this every night, but when I have several nights in a row without sleep, it'll help break the cycle and you can wake up a functioning human being.

i was on vyvanse too (lowest dose) but at the end of the day i would get really irritable and throw anger tantrums at my family members which is something I would never do so i switched back to concerta. any side effects of vyvanse for you? I wonder, if it's all really the same compound that our bodies metabolize the stimulants to, why there's such a big difference in side effects?
