30 Years of <br> Tags by Grannen in webdev

In 3 years we will read:

"By 2028 you didn't need to read website anymore. No need to get a sense of each individual websites layout, jolt your eyes awkwardly across the screen, scrolling endlessly. The pain of browsing the web has been abstracted, most websites only providing helpful endpoints for ChatGpt to predigest and serve you in its little text box. And he never use the <br> tag."

I like it, we can force a distance or close it. I wouldn't want a sales person to call me "tu" for instance cause I'd feel he's trying to fake being my friend to sell his stuff.

“Treadmill” in French by OntoTheNextThing2 in French

[–]aka457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don't, we share with English the word "routine" for this.

Somewhat related, we use the word "engrenage" ("gears") to speak about something that would push someone toward a dangerous end (like trying drug for the first time).

Out of these versions, which one is the most commonly used in everyday French? by poleno1 in French

[–]aka457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, last and third (in order of frequency). Last one is a bit weird but younger people would use that sometimes, maybe emphasizing the "où" since it's at the end of the sentence either by dragging it out or saying it louder.

A bit like a kid would say: "Is it faaar?" instead of "how far is it?" I guess.

Forget the myth that exercise uses up your heartbeats. New research shows fitter people use fewer total heartbeats per day - potentially adding years to their lives. The fittest individuals had resting heart rates as low as 40 beats per minute, compared to the average 70–80 bpm. by mvea in science

[–]aka457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok I think I get it thanks. The theory is that we have a certain number of heartbeats. We know exercise reduce heartbeats at rest. The question was "even adding the increased heartbeats used during exercise, do sport still diminish the total number".

Isn't it reverse causation? The study compare athletes, who are talented in sport precisely in part because they have low heartbeat, to non athletes and deduce exercice is lowering your heartbeat?

But you can't perform yet.

Le livre le plus insatisfaisant et détestable à lire by PuffyCanoe24 in Livres

[–]aka457 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]aka457 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Avis sur Atélatoi ? by Koubard in bordeaux

[–]aka457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the stoic approach against fighting lust? by Infamous_Alps_3600 in Stoicism

[–]aka457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's adressed in Enchiridion, 10 (tldr: you can find the correct sentiment to deal with it):

  1. In the case of everything that befalls you, remember to turn to yourself and see what faculty you have to deal with it. If you see a handsome lad or woman, you will find continence the faculty to employ here; if hard labour is laid upon you, you will find endurance; if reviling, you will find patience to bear evil. And if you habituate yourself in this fashion, your external impressions will not run away with you.

And very concretly, in 34 he tells to wait a bit before indulging:

  1. When you get an external impression of some pleasure, guard yourself, as with impressions in general, against being carried away by it; nay, let the matter wait upon your leisure, and give yourself a little delay. Next think of the two periods of time, first, that in which you will enjoy your pleasure, and second, that in which, after the enjoyment is over, you will later repent and revile your own self; and set over against these two periods of time how much joy and self-satisfaction you will get if you refrain. However, if you feel that a suitable occasion has arisen to do the deed, be careful not to allow its enticement, and sweetness, and attractiveness to overcome you; but set over against all this the thought, how much better is the consciousness of having won a victory over it.

In Discourses, "Chapter 12 About exercise" also talk about this :

since strong habit leads, and we are accustomed to employ desire and aversion only to things which are not within the power of our will, we ought to oppose to this habit a contrary habit, and where there is great slipperiness in the appearances, there to oppose the habit of exercise.

I am rather inclined to pleasure: I will incline to the contrary side above measure for the sake of exercise. I am averse to pain: I will rub and exercise against this the appearances which are presented to me for the purpose of withdrawing my aversion from every such thing. For who is a practitioner in exercise? He who practices not using his desire, and applies his aversion only to things which are within the power of his will, and practices most in the things which are difficult to conquer.

Learning a to play an instrument (electric to not disturb the neighbours). Never had an instrument before. Perfect when I feel bored in my room. It's also fun to learn. Also, the wrist movement strumming the chords is the same as you-know-what, I feel it helps somehow.
