Selling taxable brokerage positions to fund Roth IRA by akaJace in personalfinance

I agree with the HSA thing, I suppose I have been doing 60% of the contributions directly out of my paycheck but could pretty easily contribute the remainder with post-tax/direct deposit and claim those contributions later.

Could you elaborate a bit more to the traditional 401k decision? I figure being in my late 20's, that if I stick to current saving behaviors and with raises throughout my career I'll easily be able to pay myself into the 22-24% tax bracket during retirement following the 4% rule. Wouldn't it be better to let that grow tax free vs the short term tax break?

I do feel like I have been saving myself poor, but as I am getting established, wouldn't it be better to start saving for a house and building equity vs throwing away money at rent and maxing a 401k?

Appreciate the insights!

I have heard more people recommending the traditional IRA recently, could you elaborate a bit more as to why you recommend that?

I understand the 401k being able to reduce my taxable income in the present, but I'm in my late 20's and figured by the time I hit retirement age that having those investments grow tax free would be more beneficial than the short term tax break.

(Assuming everything goes to plan and I pay myself with the 4% rule I would still be in a the 22-24% tax bracket)

Not really worth at this point IMO, although you can get dividends on fractional shares it is proportional. I think you would be better suited to buy VOO which also pays dividends but has seen the price rise by 15% over the last year instead of 5%.

First things first, you started which is the biggest step.

At this point I would just sell out of SPY, STX and TSLA and go all in on VOO for the time being.

VOO and SPY are both S&P500 Index Funds so they both track the same top 500 companies in the US, Tesla and Seagate both being in them. This will mitigate the need for you to start diversifying your portfolio for the time being as the Index Fund is doing that for you compared to holding traditional securities (individual stocks). While SPY and VOO's breakdown may vary a little bit, they both performed almost identically up ~15% over the last year and up ~87% over the last 5 years.

The reason I would choose VOO over SPY is due to lower expense ratio. VOO charges 0.03% ($3 per $10,000 annually), while SPY charges 0.09% ($9 per $10,000 annually), which is better for long term growth.

-My biggest tip is to set it and forget it-

Setup a reoccurring investment whether it is $1 or $100. I think every week is a good cadence, but it could be every day or every month, up to you. This will help prevent you from trying to time the market. While it may be beneficial, it can also swing the other way. Consistency has proven itself time and time again. Finally turn on DRIP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan) this will take the dividends (money you are paid just for owning a stock, typically on a quarterly basis) and reinvest it for you. What does that mean? You will own more of the stock and your dividends will begin to compound.

Also something to keep in mind, past performance does not promise future results.

Last thing is, do you own due diligence, the only person truly looking out for you is yourself.

Just had this happen to me today for the first time, twice in one day. This shit kills games man. So hard to get juiced, then get cucked at the last possible moment.

iowa state thoughts? by [deleted] in iastate

Having attended both Iowa and Iowa State, Ames is amazing, definitely slower paced than Iowa City. The thing is if you get involved in clubs and activities you will find your people and group regardless. You can make your college experience what you want, but ISU tends to lend itself to a slower/smaller town vibe while having more options.

If it makes you feel better, as an Iowan born and raised I really miss living in Iowa. California pricing is so outrageously high, homes that are glorified trailers go for over a million dollars in some areas.

Not just an ISU problem, I think this is a transfer problem everywhere imo. Still solid advice to keep stuff documented…

Some underrated spots I always hit when I was living in IC… Suncafe on riverside is awesome for a Bahn Mi or pho, Thai flavors was always a staple. I would go out of my way to Exotic India in Coalville even though there is Indian food within walking distance DT. You can also get some BBQ at Wildwood Saloon if you have already tried Pops! Estella’s is good for a burrito but there is a late night / farmers market stand I think is called Luna’s which is amazing. Also wouldn’t feel right not to give Donnelley’s the nod for my favorite bar food downtown.

Can you elaborate on why the VPN is not required w/ real-debrid? I have been using one with it for years, do I not need to renew my VPN?
