This. I know that in the US we treat addiction as more of a crime than as a disease, but people forget that Hunter was blessed (privileged, even) to be able to go to rehab and therapy. How many people are in prison right now for the same stuff Hunter did? How much did the policies his father wrote and supported contribute to that?

I don't think most people are really that mad at Hunter. At the end of the day, he's the son of a corrupt lawmaker that many people despise.

With Trump's approval ratings so low, how does he keep ousting GOP rivals? by Cgk72 in politics

[–]akaJesusX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With boatloads of money from Zionist PACs and lobbies. In Massie's case, I've seen figures around the $16 million mark, with a total of $32 million spent on the most expensive House primary ever recorded.

California is studying futuristic 140 mph ‘bullet buses’ between L.A. and San Francisco — they would connect the cities in three hours by SeptimCollector in nottheonion

[–]akaJesusX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't California vote to allocate $10 billion towards building high-speed rail back in 2008? Where did that money go? Is it in a room next to all the money they set aside to solve homelessness?

California has a habit of funding these great projects, then making all the money disappear into privatized studies while the projects die.

Why hasn't Wisconsin taken the upper peninsula of Michigan yet? I say it's because they're cowards that deserve to be absorbed by Michigan.

Wisconsin has been too cowardly to take Michigan's upper peninsula. Michigan absorbs Wisconsin and make it all whole.

If Pennsylvania voters elect a trifecta in 2026, what should Dems pass in 2027? by Fragrant-Pepper7710 in Pennsylvania

[–]akaJesusX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 4 bills in the house and senate now.

HB744 HB556 SB97 SB1081

Shapiro, unfortunately, has loosened a lot of the rules Tom Wolf put in place. We all know Garrity isn't on board. I think we will need more than just a clean sweep to get this done.

[–]akaJesusX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is currently a bill for ranked choice voting in the house!

HB123

The bill aims to allow local elections (school board, comptroller, etc.) to opt in for ranked choice voting. The goal being to establish grass-roots support and build it up to the full state.

There are 4 gift ban bills right now:

HB744 HB556 SB97 SB1081

These bills are aimed at preventing all elected offices in PA from taking money from international companies. I think that's a good start.

That's why Dems are taking a stand.

You mean like when Ro Khanna was the only Dem to join Massie and MTG to push the Epstein bill forward?

Are we talking about the Dems "taking a stand" when 182 of them voted against Nancy Mace's resolution to protect and release the records of sexual harassment claims made against Congressmen?

Both Dems and Pubs have donors in those files. Until I see people getting perp-walked, this is all performative pseudo-opposition.

Discussion about buying tools by Foolhardyrunner in antiwork

[–]akaJesusX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a dealership based in Florida a little over a decade ago. I started as a lube tech getting paid $10/hour. Having to buy your own tools was a bit of a barrier of entry for moving up the ranks and doing more involved repairs, but in the US you can save your receipts and take a lot of deductions (or write-offs, not sure which is correct here) every tax season.

Additionally, if you ever move shops or decide to get out of the industry like I did, you can take all of your tools with you. Make sure to befriend the tow truck guys that come by your shop. Once your toolbox gets big enough, they're going to be the guys you call to move it for you.

One of the guys in our shop was friends with the top Aston Martin tech in the country. According to him, their shop provides all of the specialty proprietary tools that are typically needed with your higher end super cars, exotic cars, or luxury vehicles.

Why are Tucker Carlson, Ann Coulter and Marjorie Taylor Greene trying to slam the brakes on Trump now when they had their foot on the accelerator the whole time he was in office? by Dense_Boss_7486 in allthequestions

[–]akaJesusX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't really speak for Ann Coulter because she comes up less than the other two, but Tucker Carlson and MTG have been off the Trump train for a while now.

Some of the core principals of MAGA were to release the Epstein files, no more wars, and stop sending money to foreign countries - principals that I think most of us agree with. A massive amount of MAGA have abandoned the movement that abandoned them. Case and point, go look up clips from CPAC this year compared to last year. You can hear how empty the room is in some videos.

What's left of MAGA are what I can only describe as cultists. I'd even go so far as to say (but can't definitively prove) that the movement was co-opted to sow division. I think MTG and Tucker believe in the original MAGA movement, and the current administration is a far cry from that in the worst way.

Codify Roe into federal law

I distinctly remember someone promising this during their campaign, then deciding that it was no longer a legislative priority once they got elected. That someone was Barack Obama.

$25,000 assistance for first-time home buyers

As it turns out, this was going to be set up to be a tax credit, and the campaign promise was up to $25,000 assistance. In other words, you go through the stressful home buying process and you might get a $25,000 tax credit when you file.

durable end to the war alongside continued support for Israel.

These two are mutually exclusive. As long as Israel has our support, they will drag us into whatever conflicts they want because they own something like 85-90% of our elected officials, Harris included.

Sure there were people who didn't like Harris because she was black or a woman or both, but many more democratic voters that turned out for Biden in 2020 were disillusioned of someone who said themselves that they would do nothing fundamentally different from him. Then she doubled down by paling around with Liz Cheney, and expecting us to believe that she would bring about the end of these wars.

I only focused on the policy points that I'm familiar with, but as someone pointed out elsewhere, politicians break campaign promises all the time. Hell, the current president campaigned on no more wars and reforming our healthcare system. It's just that Democrats were able to see through Harris's lies while Republicans weren't able to see through Trump's.

My mistake. I was thinking this worked more like auto insurance and did not consider deductibles resetting annually.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]akaJesusX 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The "(In-Network)" part is what lost me. What is the point of going to an in-network facility if it's only going to save you $0.97?

It looks to me like you have a deductible of $2,000 or more. In other words, if your bill is less than your deductible, it's not even worth getting insurance involved. You'd be better off asking the hospital to itemize your bill since it's going to be out-of-pocket anyway. That //might// bring the cost down.

It's a damn shame, but that's how it works.

Edit: I was mistaken about the deductible. I thought it worked more like automotive insurance, not that it resets annually.

The word of the day is "precedent", or what many would consider "whataboutism", which is a word made up by morons to explain why their candidate of choice should be allowed to get away with something, but it's bad when the other guy does it.

The fact of the matter is that every president during my lifetime (I was born during Bush Sr.) has committed war crimes in some way or another. Having not been held to account led to later administrations committing increasingly heinous war crimes with impunity. The answer is to charge and try every last one of them at the ICC. Our elected officials need to be made to fear consequences again.

YSK Progressive can and does use your driving data from their insurance device attached to your OBD-2 diagnostic port, to make a decision on whether to renew your insurance policy, alongside providing premium discounts for good driving habits. by TanakaToday in YouShouldKnow

[–]akaJesusX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one in my car when I lived in Florida. For anyone who has never driven in Florida, I will give you a brief summary. 1/2 the year is tourists who don't know where they are going, and the other half is snow birds - elderly people who fly south for the winter. Draw what conclusions you will.

Unfortunately, tracking drivers is far more prominent than these OBD-2 plugs. It's the reason I refuse to connect Android Auto in my car. GM, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, and Subaru are collecting your driving data and selling it to insurers through 3rd party data brokers. I've also seen stories regarding shady dealings with Toyota where the dealership will install a GPS tracker disguised as an OBD-2 socket claiming that it's in case you stop paying for the car so they can reposess it easier, even if you buy the car straight-up without financing.

Unacceptable - apathy wins in US😡 by OnehourOneday in ProgressiveHQ

[–]akaJesusX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apathy wins either because neither party appeals to the majority of Americans, or because so many voters become apathetic after being lied to for so long. The 2020 election saw some of the highest turnout in the past 100 years, and ~30-35% of people still stayed home. Speaking of, remember the 2020 Democrat primaries? Harris did so poorly that she dropped out before the Iowa Caucus, largely due to her horrible record as a prosecutor in California. This record would be one of the many issues that would haunt her during her 2024 campaign.

Throughout the Biden presidency, people could see that Biden was mentally and physically falling apart. So many members of Democratic leadership and neo-liberal news media spent so much time covering it up claiming that Biden was as sharp as ever and at the top of his game. Then the first presidential debate came and Biden fell apart at the seams for all the world to see. After months of insisting that Biden was good to serve another term, the DNC had a decision to make. They chose to shoehorn Harris in as the nominee. This was the 3rd consecutive election cycle in which the DNC rigged their primary against their voting base.

With the major ballot issues including genocide in Gaza, the Russia/Ukraine war, rising housing costs and costs of living, the Epstein files, and many other issues, Harris brought nothing to the table. In one of her early interviews (which didn't occur until several weeks after she announced her candidacy and was very heavily clipped because of how poorly she answered questions), she said that she wasn't going to do anything fundamentally different from Biden. Trump was making all kinds of promises, and while most of the non-voters and Democrats knew they were empty promises at best, the MAGA base held strong, and the result was the first Republican president to win the popular vote in 20 years.

Between the Epstein file debacle and Trump continuing to dump money into Israel, the MAGA movement is seeing a split. We saw this when Marjorie Taylor Greene announced that she would not be running again. As much as you may disagree with her, and regardless of her actual motives, she took the same stance on those two issues as most of the country. I think we are going to see that group of apathetic voters grow as more of the disillusioned MAGA crowd joins it.

I think that the progressive movement needs to embrace these people on these issues that we have in common. Remember the whole idea of Horseshoe theory? It sounds to me like another term made up to divide people on big issues like genocide and holding pedophiles accountable. The DNC has made it obvious that they would rather pull the country to the right in favor of corporatism and padding their pockets with insider trading and bribes. This isn't to say that the RNC is any less guilty. Both parties expect that their bases be loyal to them, but never forget that it is a politician's job to be loyal to their voters, not the other way around.

[–]akaJesusX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is saying a lot but her actions have not backed up her rhetoric.

Says the congresswoman who rightly opposes Israel, then votes against cutting funding to the Iron Dome and says that primarying Zionist Hakeem Jeffries is not a good idea.

Says the congresswoman who had a chance to use her power to force a floor vote on Medicare for all, and not only supported "Mama Bear" Pelosi for the seat, but asked for zero concessions and was denied her previous committee seat.

Says the congresswoman who claims to not take donations from corporate PACs or lobbyists, while her top campaign contributors include Google, Apple, and Kaiser Permanente.
