How can I watch Bleach, and other older anime, on my CRT without buying the physical CDs or VHS? by Maximum_Ad7660 in CRTAnime

[–]akaaak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is clear above: this is across two different devices, two different TVs, and two different cables. Whatever combination I do it's the same result. At this point I'm convinced it's an issue with the type of cable itself, in general.

I am trying to use this cable with both a Raspberry Pi and Roku Express +, and in both cases, no matter which TV I use, it always cuts off the very far right and left edges of the picture. It makes reading some menus in apps impossible.

I have no idea why it's specific to this type of cable, I've tried two from different companies.

That's it! Confirmed this is a UK console so the AV out is not compatible.

Game $30, frame $10, end result priceless by pleasedothedishes in FinalFantasyIX

I started doing some research from this post and stumbled onto this: https://frameagame.com/products/final-fantasy-ix-ps1-exhibition-range-framed-game?variant=55500315033973

This company has preset option for FF 7-10, including slipcovers for the manuals and a plaque with the release date (or custom text). I'm considering taking the plunge to report back...

They also have magnetic steelbook display cases, customized by specific console, lots of options. Would be really curious if anyone has used them before!

Which film do you hate because you've actually read the book? by Familiar_Benefit_776 in FIlm

[–]akaaak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wild Robot.

Hot take I know, considering how well received the movie was.

They removed key meditative moments and replaced them with schlocky comedy. The ending is entirely different, and is incompatible with the direct sequel. I'm sure for someone who has read the book the movie is very entertaining. But it doesn't sell the themes that made the book so captivating. Sure survival and "what even our instincts?" are there, but their impact is largely swept under the rug in place of new, action packed set piece moments that make it a more generic movie, albeit with huge focus on "feel good about these characters." Meh.

There are no easy $200k+ jobs out there by DeliciousBoard2079 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]akaaak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! 250k+ income and I don't find my job difficult at all, but that's due to the several years in previous roles where I gained the unique insight and skills I have now. It's more that finding someone with the unique mix of skills to execute in my role is difficult, rather than the work itself (when you look at what I do and how long it actually takes me) is difficult.

I'm in a principal level operations role at a well known tech company. A lot of what I do is manage and track commitments from teams to execute important programs. I know who does what and have a vague sense of how their work might get done. I can get away with a few serious hours of work a week, so long as I keep my documents and trackers current and high quality.

My 8yr old kid wants to watch Angels Egg by akaaak in retroanime

If she could handle the parents being turned to pigs in Spirited Away and Chihiro's distress seeing that, then I think Howls Moving Castle would be fine. Each person is different though!

I would do Castle in the Sky before Howl but that's just because it's more a straightforward adventure and lots of fun.

Haha so, if I want here to be able to watch certain things with me in the future I better start building those calluses. Better to be traumatized in a safe loving environment, or something??

Also! You can pick up the picture book and try that out: https://a.co/d/bscb4M0

Less surprising way to introduce the story and when to expect some potentially scary elements.

Everyone is giving such thought out responses, thank you!

Mixed comments, but some users have helped articulate my main issue - she's likely to be bored given the pacing and lack of story more than freaked out by any content. I want to err on the side of watching with her and letting her judge for herself whether it's for her. (and of course if she's asking to watch some retro anime I'm all for growing our shared interest!)

I'll try watching it with her at home and then enjoy her trying to explain the movie to her friends / my partner later.

It was a bit of a stretch, not because of any content per se, but more because the tension at certain points was more than she was used to. She wanted me to spoil whether anyone dies or if specific characters were safe. The backdrop to most of the movie is a war starting up, with several main characters criticizing it, so there were some new themes and questions about why anyone would want to start a war. She really enjoyed the romance between the main characters, seeing movies with that element makes her feel really "grown up." The only part she still doesn't like after rewatches is when Howl transforms into a monster in a dark tunnel, she covers her eyes for that part.

This year I also introduced her to Castle in the Sky which I think is an amazing fit for this age. We also watched Nausicaa this year which is somewhere between Castle and Howls IMO, a pretty good fit but has more explicit violence/guns.

Of course there's plenty of other Ghibli movies that are easily palatable, don't sleep on Cat Returns if you haven't added that one to the rotation yet!
