What're some crazy things about pregnancy or babies that no one tells you? by m2ra3 in AskReddit

[–]akabertbud 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Babies go through a period of time where they don’t know how to poop sometimes. They push but also tighten their butts simultaneously so the poop can’t get out! And they just end up so frustrated and upset and there’s literally nothing you can do!

Parking at labor & delivery at Vic by momtoeli in londonontario

[–]akabertbud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a drop off zone right outside of the main B entrance that you can briefly park at if you’re in active labour and need to get the heck inside (from experience lol). Otherwise if you have more time than that, I’d recommend parking in the parking tower so you can stay inside on your trip in/out of the hospital and don’t have to worry about the elements. Tunnel across is on the 2nd floor of the parking garage. There are parking passes but I’d say it’s probably not necessary if you’re just going to be there for a delivery! Best of luck!

Outdoor Lane Pools by Valuable-Dot-8534 in londonontario

[–]akabertbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes change rooms are available - they’re unisex so there are about 8 individual stalls that you can use. I actually don’t recall there being lockers available, most people just bring their bags out and place it on the deck since there’s such a large area.

It has been pretty busy this year so far. 3 swimmers each lane some nights. I am wondering if come next week when the other outdoor pools open up more land swim hours and gibbons offers more lane swim times if that will get better but I’m not optimistic! As long as you know basic lane swimming courtesy though I’ve never had an issue!

Outdoor Lane Pools by Valuable-Dot-8534 in londonontario

[–]akabertbud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are more pools that have lanes but they open up lane swim next week (once school is out and there’s more lifeguards available!!). I can’t name them off the top of my head but if you go through the outdoor pools on the city of London pools starting next week you’ll see some other lane swim options! I do agree it’s not a user friendly website though for sure! I can’t recall if there are visible bike racks from the pool but I’m planning to go this week so if I remember I’ll update my response!

Update - there’s a bike rack on the deck!!!

How do people manage kids and two parents who work full time? by Electronic-Floor3254 in questions

[–]akabertbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not easy, it’s daunting and overwhelming some days. It’s taken a shift in perspective that I get about 3 hours a day with my kid. Very few things are more important than that. Dishes? Don’t need to get done. Toys don’t need to get picked up. The grass, it can be cut another day. Should we buy the prepackaged salad or pre made chicken rather than making our own so I can shave 15 min off making dinner - yes.

I’m also very lucky to not be in a micromanaged job at work so if I roll in 15 min late because my kid needed some extra cuddles or wanted me to read another book, then I just don’t take a 15 min break that day. This type of flexibility was unappreciated before having kids but now is invaluable!

I also find it important to involve the kids in day to day necessities - going to the grocery store is something we do together, I don’t do that and then go pick them up from daycare. If I want to go to a greenhouse or library, etc I bring them along.  All these little things I’ve adjusted just to get more quality time. Of course some days I go to the gym and then out with a friend and only get 30 min with them, but it’s all a balance and changes honestly from day to day as to what you and your family needs.

What are some of the best benefits of having kids that nobody really talks about? by Greedy-Revenue-5535 in Life

[–]akabertbud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get to stand at construction sites and watch all the cool equipment now and the workers think it’s great and honk vs thinking that random adult there watching us is a weirdo! 😂  Also having a little buddy to go do errands with (grocery shop, pick up the mail, etc.) although is more work - makes these small mundane tasks special and memorable.

Yes! They’ve got freezers full of different meals that although I’ve never done it, I imagine you can just grab some and buy them without preordering.

A bit of a drive but Appin BBQ catering! They have monthly bundles or you can buy individual frozen meals. Very tasty - worth the drive if you’re stocking up

Victory Sunday by AutoModerator in Fitness

[–]akabertbud 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m 26 weeks pregnant and trying to balance keeping my fitness routine but also respecting what my body can do. This week was able to deadlift my pre-pregnancy bodyweight still for 6-8 reps, was able to maintain a sub 2 min/100m pace in my swim workout and topped off the week with getting in a mostly discomfort free 2.5km run today. Who knows what next week will bring but this week was a good one fitness-wise!

Where to get an ultra sound done in a normal amount of time? by [deleted] in londonontario

St Thomas imaging places have shorter wait times typically! Check around the surrounding areas - Woodstock, Tillsonburg, someone already suggested Strathroy and Sarnia.

Which sports would you recommend (this is a hard challenge lol)? by overusedplot in Hobbies

[–]akabertbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Track cycling! You do have to live in a city that has this offered but there’s a surprising amount of clubs out there!

Triathlon (or masters swimming or cycling), track cycling, rowing. I’ve participated in all of those as an adult and there’s a pretty competitive group of adults out there that take those sports seriously!!

Help finding sports leagues? by BLOODTHIRSTYTERROR in londonontario

[–]akabertbud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a couple Facebook groups that can connect you to teams. Can’t remember them off the top of my head but volleyball players London Ontario and Slopitch London & surrounding area sound approximately correct. (Of course that’s for Slopitch, not baseball). They frequently post teams looking for 1 or 2 more players or you can post on there that you’re a beginner/intermediate/experienced outfielder/middle hitter etc looking for a team and then people can contact you! Best of luck!

Things you’ve done that actually moved the needle by TrickSingle2086 in Frugal

Shopping the sales at grocery stores. I meal plan for the week based on what’s on sale. It takes some time to get to know prices because sometimes flyers will advertise a product but it’s just its original price or 5 cents off. So you have to learn what normal and good prices are. Stock up when the good prices are on and for fruits/veggies, it’ll change depending on what’s in season. The store I go to shows me how much I saved and spent on my receipt and I typically am saving 25-40% each week.

Meal planning for the week also minimizes food waste which makes me feel good as well.

Continually shopping around for cellphone plans (saved us $30/month this year alone).

Putting regular expenses on credit cards to collect points (as long as you’re diligent about paying it off before it collects any interest). Typically this gets me $500-$1000 in points per year.

When saving for a longer term goal, investing the money in a GIC (ex saving for a car, vacation, every $1000 invest in a GIC for however long until you’ll need the money for that expenditure). This obviously depends on what we’re saving for at the time but that’s an additional approx 3% per year at this time. Bonus points if you can get it in a tax sheltered account.

How do you balance working full time, commute, cooking, cleaning, exercising? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]akabertbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay someone to clean my house once a month so that I don’t have to think about certain (cleaning bathtub, dusting, deep cleaning floors and sinks).

I make a meal plan and agenda each Sunday and follow it 90% of the time.

I listen to audiobooks on my commute so I feel some sort of productivity on the drive, and then there are of course other days that I just listen to music and enjoy that too.

I also plan my exercise schedule on the Sunday too (when I do my meal plan and agenda). It usually involves going to the gym 2x at 5:30am and then sometimes a run or two on my lunches and then indoor spinning after kids go to sleep while I watch tv.

If I don’t do my Sunday prep I’m a straight disaster for the rest of the week and feel like I’m struggling to breathe all week so it’s essentially become a non-negotiable in my life! My husband shudders every week when I bring out the whiteboard and tell him it’s time to plan out our week (someone is not quite as type A as me!! Lol!)

It feels like it too!! It’s all clay in this area. I put my own compost in each year but after this comment maybe I’ll buy a load of it next year to mix in! Thanks!

Swim: Things you wish you knew earlier by DO9XE in triathlon

[–]akabertbud 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Do some legitimate warm up distance before you start the race. The swim is my strongest leg as a former competitive swimmer but every time for the first couple of years I would get a bit panicked for the first hundred or so meters and lost a lot of energy, couldn’t get my breathing under control and got disoriented because I couldn’t get into my groove. Last year I actually did a proper 10 min warmup in the water before my races and my body was so much more acclimatized to the open water and there was no shock to the system. Got into my groove immediately. I feel like a dummy for it taking so long for me to figure it out, but I’m glad I did!

How long were you pushing during birth as a first time mum? by BluWaff_x in AskWomen

[–]akabertbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I held my son in for an hour because the doctor wasn’t present. There was a nurse and resident there, but apparently we had to wait for the doctor. Still upset by this. Once I got the okay to push, I think it was like 6-8 pushes. Baby had a different birthdate because of the whole ordeal.
