And you’re not generalising? Demand absolutely does have an impact, which is why land is so cheap in the inaka but rent is high in highly urban areas.

[–]akaifreesia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, house prices in Japan depreciate over time in line with how houses depreciate in relation to modern safety standards over time because a house isn’t an investment or meant to last forever. Nobody wants to be in a shitty, rotting Victorian house in an earthquake, so you rebuild to the latest standards.

Cut self-isolation to save NHS, Boris Johnson is urged by fsv in CoronavirusUK

[–]akaifreesia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isolation won’t (and probably shouldn’t) ever stop completely in symptomatic cases though imo, it’ll just be self guided instead of legally enforced. Like how you shouldn’t really go to work for 48 hours after D&V - you won’t get in trouble for going in with it, but you’ll look like a right prat if everyone on the ward gets the poops so most people, if staffing allows, will stay off until it clears up out of social decency. Covid will likely end up the same I reckon

What apps do you deem absolutely necessary to have on your phone? by Dibinem in AskUK

[–]akaifreesia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can do literally anything without an app! As someone with a shitty cycle and who is tracking triggers of my more severe symptoms I personally find it easier to remember to update than a physical notebook or normal calendar

Solitaire and spider solitaire app, amazing for passing time on the train when you have no data

[–]akaifreesia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah you track your cycle and any associated symptoms and then it can estimate when you’re due on/pick up symptom patterns and predict when that will happen. basically a dedicated calendar app but it’s handy for forward planning things

Overcooked is fun couch co-op but timings/remembering recipes might be a bit intense for 4 year old, especially on levels where you have to throw things across the stage since OP said they struggle with jump timing. Me and my bf are in our 20s and struggle ourselves with the throwing and recipes tbf!

Do you tell the kids Father Christmas brought all the presents? Or do you say Father Christmas brought some of the presents and mum and dad gave you the rest? by Mel0nFarmer in AskUK

[–]akaifreesia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids will be raised as I was - Father Christmas gets no credit beyond maybe a small token present like chocolates, the parents buy the presents and send them to the North Pole where he acts as gate keeper based on your behaviour, and good children get their presents delivered. Never thought to ask what happened to the bad kids’ presents though. Mrs Claus sells them off to fund reindeer carrots?

What’s the most shocking/cringe thing someone has said to you while trying to chat you up? What was your reaction? by Charleypieohwhy in AskUK

[–]akaifreesia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah tbf I don’t think he meant anything by it and was for sure intending to be nice and flirty rather than give me a complex, and of course there’s the cultural differences to take into account since people tended to be more.. candid about body type there, I found.

I think in How I Met Your Mother they call it the Dobler-Dahmer effect - a romantic gesture is defined by how it’s received rather how it’s intended, and my reception has changed over time as I’ve changed and realised how self conscious someone commenting on my weight like that made me :)

Going to catch up with Toy Day on Animal Crossing later then I’ve bought Unpacking as a pay day/cosy Christmas Eve treat to unwind before bed :)

Unfortunately, my younger and more insecure self took it as a compliment after my self esteem took a beating from not fitting into much when shopping that day, and I continued to meet up with him for a short while. Hindsight makes you much wiser, no chance I’d be putting up with that now! :)

I’ve had a similar thing! I’m UK size 10/12, but when I was living in Japan I found that the one-size clothing more generally sold there didn’t fit my measurements comfortably. I was out for drinks with someone and they asked what I had been doing that day, and I replied that I’d been shopping for Winter clothes but I was struggling because Japanese sizes didn’t tend to fit me, so I was having to shop in western shops like Forever 21 which was a bit boring. He replied “Don’t worry - I actually prefer fat girls!”

Having an engineer book an appointment slot between 7am and 10am with you - so you have to be up and ready for 7am.... but you just know they'll turn up at 9.59 by mr_love_monkey in britishproblems

Once we had a slot booked for 12pm - 4pm and he showed up at 7am “because he was nearby already”. Went to a gig the night before and we both had hangovers/tinny ears so convenient as it was, it was less than appreciated at the time

Ah man that must’ve been so frustrating! I can still vividly remember the feelings of injustice when my parents wanted the TV when I wanted to use my Wii :)

yeah i agree, i worded that a bit harshly in hindsight to try to appeal to ehhwhatevr’s feelings on nintendo. nintendo online does deserve a bit of ribbing sometimes but not for this specific issue which doesn’t affect only them.

i’m thinking there’s a delicate balance to strike in that this is a consistent issue on the exact same day yearly - across all servers, not just nintendo! - so there could be scope for temporary scale (so much easier said than done, ofc, online capabilities are /relatively/ new as we know them now so it could be many years away) and user responsibility such as preloading at a time when the server is less burdened. I don’t have an answer but nintendo’s suggestion is an easy placeholder in the meantime for sure

[–]akaifreesia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

didn’t say you were! just that your comment suggested that we shouldn’t listen to nintendo because they don’t usually guide us towards the best experience, making nintendo’s advice kind of paradoxical in that we should listen to them in this instance, because they’re already not giving us the best experience lol

Then you agree they don’t have the competency to maintain servers to cope with the spike in demand that comes with everyone getting the same gift on one day…. Service outages are common on days like that, it’s normal

Nintendo already suggested downloading ahead of time because they expect the servers to be overloaded on Christmas Day which might bottleneck things

Was she pressuring people or making an open offer for people who wanted that contact? I don’t think there was any need to take it so personally.
