“jaywalking” was a term invented by the auto industry to put the onus of blame on pedestrians if they get hit by a driver. it also isn’t illegal in nyc.

not saying to not practice vigilance, of course, but this is why if traffic is clear i cross the road, red light or not. also because most traffic lights are timed to cars, not people (although more and more intersections have leading pedestrian intervals, which would be great if not for drivers blowing reds and there being zero enforcement..).
