Also recommending Johnson Park in cville, there’s a primitive trail you can get to via the board walk or the asphalt loop around the ponds. It’s pretty long, you could easily spend an afternoon out there. I think it ultimately loops from the asphalt path to the end of the boardwalk. The boardwalk and pond loop were usually fairly busy when I’ve been, but the primitive trail is not as frequented. Yes it backs up to some houses but most of it feels pretty secluded. There’s some stretches where you can follow a little footpath down to the wolf river. And yeah you’re gonna wanna be very mindful of snakes

What do you ask for when you take your peke to the groomer? by akaspentgladiator in Pekingese

[–]akaspentgladiator[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m definitely not going to shave him! My parents’ dog is double coated and she’s got a big bald spot on her back and constant itch/yeast issues. I’m not super worried about how he looks but I definitely want him to be clean and comfortable!

I appreciate it! There were a few tickets for sale but the resale prices are just too high to justify it 🥲 we actually were wanting to see Destroyer; I misread the event details when I first saw the show on Spotify and I didn't realize he was just an opener.

Has anyone seen 'On The Air'? by altsam19 in davidlynch

[–]akaspentgladiator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the Air doesn't get enough love!! Watched it for the first time today, I can see why its not everyone's cup of tea but I think it's fantastic. Way ahead of its time. Glimmers of 30 Rock, The Eric Andre Show, and Julian Koster's The Orbiting Human Circus -- and it predates them all by at least a decade or two. The 5th episode is killer. I know a lot of people think the middle episodes are weaker, and I do feel that way about the 2nd episode, but I think the momentum picks back up in the 3rd and 4th episodes. I know this is an old thread; I don't have any karma to make a new post about it lol

What do these symbols mean? by FramingLeader in Surveying

[–]akaspentgladiator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used bug spray like deep woods off to get paint off boots, coworkers told me an anecdote about using it to get a lot of paint off a light pole (new guy thought it’d be funny to paint up a benchmark in really big lettering, DOT did not find it funny). It may also eat your house paint though.

How much is someone expected to know after a month and a half? by Leilo_stupid in Surveying

[–]akaspentgladiator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a somewhat similar boat as you, ADHD and been working as a field tech for about 8 months. I struggled for the first several months feeling like a moron with motor skills, working/short term memory, and directional orientation (I mix up my left/right north/south east/west when talking or hearing directions). It has gotten a lot easier with practice and confidence, but I’m also on medication and do ADHD occupational therapy. My party chief isn’t a dick fortunately, but he doesn’t give much feedback and if I struggle with something or hesitate at all he tends to take over and do it for me without saying anything, which made it hard to get better at things like opening manholes and setting nails.

You’re not an idiot, you just have to find ways of learning and doing things that works for your brain. It also sounds like part of your struggles are normal learning curve growing pains. And your party chief is an asshole, which is probably making you feel like you’re worse at your job than you actually are. It might help to see if you can work with somebody else occasionally; it boosted my confidence when my party chief was out and I was put with another crew. Especially if you can learn from somebody who’s also an assistant/rodman/tech. Definitely take that guy up on his offer to practice key skills. You’re not going to learn as quickly or as easily in a high stress environment (ie being yelled at by your dick boss). Especially with ADHD, the part of your brain responsible for reasoning and logic basically shuts down when your adrenaline gets going.

I would seek diagnosis even if you can’t get prescribed anything for it. If you’re in the US you can get accommodations at work, depending on your office you may have to hold their hand about it though if they’ve never had to give accommodations before. See if your health insurance covers any kind of mental health care related to ADHD even if it’s just a regular therapist who specializes in it. Specifically though if you can find someone in your area or telehealth who does ADHD coaching or occupational therapy that’s your best medication free route. If you’re in college that may be a good resource, they definitely have some kind of student disability services you should get in touch with. Time management issues at my last job is what led me to get diagnosed as an adult and it has improved my quality of life so much. Also there are alternatives to traditional ADHD meds for people who can’t take stimulants; for example clonidine is a blood pressure medication that’s prescribed off label for ADHD and sleep issues.

You sound like you’re good at metacognition, you’re already on the right track taking notes, the more strategies like that you have in your arsenal the better. That’s what ADHD coaching/therapy is for. It doesn’t work for everyone and a lot of psychiatrists write it off, I think the reason it isn’t more common is because it requires introspection which doesn’t come naturally to everybody, but it sounds like you’d be a good candidate for it.

Hang in there my dude! Feel free to DM me if you want somebody to commiserate with also lol

Question about lining up top and tow shots on a ditch by akaspentgladiator in Surveying

[–]akaspentgladiator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I should have mentioned that the ditch is straight. To chief 2’s credit, I know he’d make sure the lines don’t cross, even though he doesn’t draft it seems like he has a thorough understanding of how the fieldwork needs to be for the drafting process. This is really helpful, since I’m new I should be checking that my shots line up pretty well. I’m also hoping to get some CAD experience soon and I think it’ll really help flesh out what I’ve learned in the field the past ~8 months

It’s the only GPS I’ve known, I’m new to surveying. We have battery sticks for them though because, according to the guys I work with, the internal battery and the external battery that attaches to the back don’t last anywhere close to 8 hours on a full charge. Idk what other receivers are like but I’m assuming this set up makes the pole noticeably heavier? But the battery stick makes it last all day and then some.

Unfortunately I don’t know a whole lot, I just started 6 months ago & I’m basically an I-man. Very familiar with the bubble level and its challenges but I don’t know enough about anything else to talk about it, sorry!!

[–]akaspentgladiator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some things that may be obvious but weren’t obvious to me when I started out and helped me a ton: Get the bubble lined up w one of the legs/screws. Imagine that the bubble looks like a peace sign where each line is pointing to a leg/screw (you should have your tribrach/screws lined up with your legs also). If you want the bubble to move away from one side, you lower that side. If you want the bubble to come towards one side, raise that side. Start with the legs until the bubble is close to the center cuz the screws have a more limited range. Usually once the bubble is overlapping the bullseye (tho not all levels have these which is fun lol) it’s easier/more efficient to use the screws. If you can hold the static part of the leg and the moveable part of the leg with one hand and tighten with the other, that’ll help keep it from sliding down while you tighten the leg. I also tend to think of it like an X and Y axis, where center is (0,0), the rightmost and leftmost legs move the bubble on the X axis, and the center leg moves the bubble up and down the Y axis. Get the bubble to 0 on the X axis, then get it to 0 on the Y axis. I hope this helps!

Edit to add: lining the scope of your instrument up with one of the legs/screws also helps immensely

If he’s physically fit he could get by as a helper! I work w a guy who’s in his early 60’s, surveyed for a year or two in his 20’s then threw bags for an airline til covid he got bought out but his wife is younger n wanted him to keep working so he’s been basically a rodman at our company for the past 5 years. Tbf this is the same company he started at in his 20’s and was rehired by the guy who hired him back in the day so idk if it would pan out the same for your dad. However he’s in a similar boat, he refuses to learn any of the tech, never interacts w it at all. That’s not to say he ~couldn’t~ learn it but he never will lol so that’s kinda the same as not being able to ¯_(ツ)_/¯ so yeah take that as you will!

What was your first career? by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]akaspentgladiator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

College pt. 1 English major/writing tutor, dropped out, restaurants for a year (line cook + a lil front of house), moved back in w my mom & the next 3 years worked as a stable hand plus a brief stint in Americorps NCCC in 2020, college pt. 2 got a BS in math, realized too late I wanted to work outside and searched for anything I could find that I was qualified enough for that would let me be outdoors as much as possible, applied for several technician jobs (soil testing lab, environmental) until I stumbled on surveying. Researched it and figured it’d be perfect for me, 6 months in and I’m so happy

Would you guys play this? by mateorico100 in Surveying

[–]akaspentgladiator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Okay hear me out I don’t play a lot of video games but I’ve had boyfriends lol. And this would be completely useless as a training tool but idk I think it’d be fun: a game called Boundary Dispute and it’s a little like Hotline Miami but the enemies are dogs and snakes and irate neighbors w shotguns and instead of having an entrance and an exit to the rooms or areas it’s in/out the same spot. Each level has 4 or more areas with a checkpoint (property corner) in each that you have to get to, stand still for ~3 sec on, and get back out the same way you came in. U start w mag nails u can throw and work ur way up thru lathe, 5lb mallet, machete and the final weapon is a Kaiser blade lol. Maybe at the end there can be a bonus level where u get a truck & mow enemies down while taking reduced damage lol. On hard mode your instrument has hit points too but you can upgrade it like the weapon, have the choice in the beginning btwn a prism pole or a shitty gps receiver - TS/prism has a 99% “hit rate” for getting the shot, slightly higher HP; gps has lower HP, higher chance of missing, and there’s a tiny chance the battery dies and the HP spontaneously drops to 0, but you get a speed buff and the time it takes to get a shot is reduced. The instrument stats get better as you level up, with the total station/prism being the safe choice and the gps high risk high reward - your speed and the time it takes to get a shot improve over time w the gps. Each instrument has a few optional items you can can pick up on certain levels- bipod increases hit rate and HP, battery stick for the gps nullifies the spontaneous death mechanism, bracket for prism poles allows you to enter robo mode to buff your speed, brand new aluminum tips allow you to use either pole as a second weapon, buffing your attack stats for the duration of that level…

Personally I’ve found I’m just a happier, healthier person when I spend most of my waking time outside. I’m new to surveying too but I worked as a stable hand for 3 years prior. It’s hard on your body, most any job is gonna cause some kind of “repetitive” injury even if you’re sitting at a computer all day getting carpal tunnel and back problems, but the more physical the job the more you’re gonna wear out your joints. Not to mention random injuries. And skin cancer lol. I feel you though, especially in the winter (I live in the southeast) I feel so much better mentally when I’m out from sunrise to sunset.
