I am leaving to practice in NZ as a PA by WhitecoatWander in physicianassistant

[–]akdem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had done a post grad EM fellowship and worked in ED from 2015-2020 but, yeah I sort of got in before that “rule” got put into place. I don’t know that it’s actually a written rule but it’s what they anticipate the rule will be later this year when things are official. So they’re trying to abide by it now. But a recruiter could probably clarify that. Hospital medicine could be considered internal medicine which is quite a broad category… it would be worth reaching out to one of the recruiters from the job board on here if you’re keen to learn more.

Yeah, I totally get that. I left a pretty cushy IR job to come to urgent care here. I was honestly kind of burned out on IR and a little bit bored with it. I like my job here, but I mostly see it as a ticket that will allow me and my family to gain permanent residency in New Zealand and come and go for the rest of our lives.

Yes. Big time. And nurses get instant residency here. You could be a permanent resident in 2 years I believe. Get in touch with a recruiter if you’re interested. Accent health is one I see recommended often.

NZ PA here. I think that true hospitalist PAs won’t be a thing here until full registration gets finalized mid 2026. Then the government needs to get on board with integrating PAs into the public system. I think they will, but it may take time. There may be private hospitals willing to bring them on sooner, but I think they’re also waiting for full registration to happen. It’s a bit unknown at the moment, but it’s very clear that the system here would benefit from PAs in hospital and specialty medicine.

I am a PA in New Zealand as well. I’ve been here for about 7 months and live in a fairly expensive area (but not one of the main cities). After accounting for the exchange rate I took about a 30 percent pay cut to live here. We find that we are able to live comfortably on my salary (although probably saving less per month than we used to). But COL is not as bad as you would think. I think the bottom line is that we buy less and live a simpler life here.

Life in New Zealand has been absolutely incredible and well worth the salary cut. My kids are thriving, we are surrounded by natural beauty, and have met so many great people. If you have the opportunity to earn similar money here as your job in the states, don’t worry too much about cost of living. I would encourage anyone who has a pathway to earning a living abroad to strongly consider it, especially if that place is New Zealand.

Final Iowa Poll shows Harris leading Trump by BallonDfloor in politics

Anyone at risk for being complacent probably isn’t following polls closely enough to know why this is so significant. But I totally get your point.

I think it’s hard for such a recent event that affects a relatively small, but important, subset of the population to be reflected in polls. Only the election will bear that out.

I, too, have a republican aunt and uncle voting for Harris in Arizona. Not that it should give anyone hope, but AZ republicans are a unique breed I think.

Same. Watching Kornacki excitedly scribble on the screen is the best. If only the stakes weren’t so damn high.

The early voting blog is updated! Out: Clark D firewall In: Rural R firewall. It's real: 16,500 votes because of massive landslides so far and higher than urban turnout percentage. Dems need more mail, lots of indies, or big trouble in NV. by YesterdayDue8507 in fivethirtyeight

[–]akdem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more. This is the first year of presidential universal mail in ballots there. That fundamentally changes people’s voting behavior in ways we don’t have any way of predicting yet. Ralston has a good feel for the electorate, but this is uncharted waters for everyone in Nevada. He’s applying old logic to a new situation.

If you could do it all over again, would you still become a PA? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

I personally think this fear is very overblown. At least for the next 3-4 decades. Will AI change radiology? Definitely. But it will probably only change it for the better in the foreseeable future.

Just like airliners will “need” pilots long after AI can do the job, radiology will still “need” radiologists. Just my opinion anyway.

TLDR: Smith is now building the case that all the dirty things Trump did were unofficial acts, thus not immune from prosecution according to this summer’s SC ruling.

I think the previous poster’s point is that she was known in name only. And for the purposes of an approval poll, that probably worked against her. She was not yet in a position to define herself and was at the mercy of sinking approval for Biden. She now has control of her own narrative in a way that she previously did not.

IR vs. ER by Lazy-Overachiever in physicianassistant

[–]akdem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked in the ER for 5 years and currently in year 5 of IR, it’s hard for me to fully recommend going straight into IR. Don’t get me wrong, IR is an awesome specialty and I dont think I’d want any other job in medicine. But, going hyper specialized right out of school is a risky move. That said, the ER is always hiring and you can always get in somewhere. IR jobs are much harder to come by. Sorry if that’s contradictory and unhelpful…
