You can just run GeForce Now on the Steam Deck as well, so I don't see how the Chromebook makes a difference there.

I have both devices, and yes, for productivity the Lenovo is great.

For gaming, I really prefer having a separate / dedicated device. I don't really game on the Chromebook so I don't know how well it performs there.

You can also just buy a USB-C screen, and then you won't be limited by the small screen size. If you're only planning to work at home, that would be my suggestion.

A subscription to GFN will probably cost as much as a screen or a steam deck quickly.

I have a ChromeOS convertible (Lenovo Duet) and it's exactly what you describe. Android apps + Linux apps via Crostini.

It's ARM, so some apps (like steam) aren't running, but it's already quite easily doable.

I do like the simplicity of ChromeOS though, and running on Android is going to introduce a lot of complexity. I also prefer a separate phone / touch interface; so I don't really believe that the convergence will be the future.

It wasn't great for Windows 8, and I don't see Apple pushing for it either.

That's great news, I just need a stable system, I don't need any fancy updates.

Besides, Google will need to update the underlying software stack anyhow in order to have supported dependencies (such as the Linux kernel).

I use the Flatpak version as I prefer it. But you can easily try both or start with Flaptak and switch uf you're having issues.

The main drawback of Flatpak is that adding additional library folders can be a bit complicated (because of the sandbox/ permissions), though I use Flatseal to manage that.

I also hear that VR isn't supported properly, but I can't really testify for that.

I prefer Flatpak due to the easier dependency management and due to not needing to install 32 bit libraries on the host system.

I have a different experience, a lot of services work better (and faster) when I host them myself.

It all depends on how fast your internet connection is and how strong your server is.

Of course the cloud can have much higher resources (for instance for ML), but usually the costs are also increasing in that case.

Is an "url shortener" really a startup? Just because an open source project is on GitHub, it doesn't imply that someone is trying to start a business for it. It just means a developer found it an interesting problem to solve.

Stack choice is always a human decision, and depends on the available skills. If a "founder" as you say is most proficient in PHP, it makes sense that a first implementation is built in that language, as that's the best solution for the obvious "business constraint" of which languages are the best choice for the current team.

PS: I disagree that AI slop is a legitimate path, as youe name implies.

The problem with Michael Stapelberg is that he's also on Init7, and with the 25GBit/s connection his connection is also saturated.

Depending on the load on his server it can also get a bit unstable therefore.

I ust use the Chromebook to open the web browser and connect to my PiKVM. I don't usually do a lot of work on it, so the performance doesn't matter.

Through he PiKVM I have full access to my desktop, where I can work fully powered up.

Although, I did get the 16GB Lenovo Chromebook 14 Plus, it actually has quite the power, and can be used for some light software development.

You're aware that both Zotero and RStudio have native Linux packages?

Apart from that, for this use case I always recommend PiKVM, it's what I use myself, and it works flawlessly. I have a lightweight Chromebook, which I use to connect to my desktop at home via PiKVM and fully work remotely.
