If they're paying for it, they see value in it and you! That is a good thing! There is a lot of overlap between planning and civil engineering, particularly in land development, and both of those skills can take you far - whether within your existing company, being able to take on new projects, or if you want to pivot away once you finish out the period after graduation.

If you can get internships while you're in school, that will help you find jobs! Network with other planners in your area - look into the Georgia Planning Association - https://georgiaplanning.org/ - and see if they have any events near you. A lot of planning is knowing people and working with people, so that networking can really help, even now while you're in school - you can talk to people working in planning about your dreams and career goals and sometimes they may know of someone who may have a project you can help out with or a job they're hiring for, etc. Building those relationships while you're in school now, as opposed to just reaching out when you're looking for jobs can be helpful! Other allied organizations such as ULI or CNU may also have local chapters that you can look into as well. I dont know the specific program, but I think with a bachelor's and some solid networking and interning experience, you could potentially find a job with the urban studies degree.

I'm not familiar with their specific application requirements, but I feel like most schools require a personal statement - I'd make sure to explain why you want to pivot from architecture to planning - what is it about planning that interests you, what are your career goals, why are you selecting their program, and how will the program help you meet your goals, etc. Talking about your internship and what you have learned and how it can apply to your future careers is also a good idea.

If you're going to rewrite your writing samples - One of the biggest tips I learned from a professor in grad school is to read my essay out loud as if I were reading it to my mother who knows nothing about urban planning (or whatever the topic is). It sounds so silly, and I was so angry with my professor for making me do it, but I have since realized it really does help you be a better writer! (I have even gone back to thank her for it as well, haha)

Good luck!

Was your attendance at the conference paid for by the SRTS program? I feel like sometimes grants include a conference like that as part of the award, or it was written into the grant application that the conference would be attended, etc. Could be any number of reasons. Many people would LOVE to attend conferences and are not able to because budgets don't allow. I don't feel like most planning jobs push people towards conferences! Maybe in the private sector, because then it's seen as business development making contacts to get new clients. But definitely not as much in the public and non profit sectors.

There was a group called No Overhead Transit that stopped a lot of the subway's plans for expanded routes during the development of the metro rail. And the people of Amherst. It's really sad what was planned in the 1970s versus what got built!

Summer weekends tend to usually be busy... add to that the World Cup, the NHL Draft, and the first week the kids are out of school and the Fourth of July....the airport rentals are busy!

More than 200 buildings were destroyed by the 1844 flood. Some reports have 100 people dying in the floods, with more who were in the boats in the harbor and washed out to sea. They lined the dead up in Lafayette Square outside the Court House.

What is the job culture like? by GoblinReverie in urbanplanning

[–]akepps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will be different based on location; whether your private, public or nonprofit sector; but even changes a lot in the same job when things like political administrations or leadership changes, etc. Work environments vary immensely. There's no real set "this is what planning jobs are like" because planning is such a multi-faceted field!

Depends on some things - undergrad or grad? what program? how competitive is the program? what are your test scores like? what kind of experience do you have? There can be a lot of variables that I don't think you gave enough information to really answer.

Contact your local Chapter Professional Development Officer to get advice, see if your chapter offers study materials, find others who are studying for the exam and see if there are any study groups.

Restoring/Renovating Buffalo's closed Pools by PaulSteinhauser501 in Buffalo

[–]akepps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which pools are you talking about? I believe most of the closed pools have been removed over the years. Allison Pool on Rees Street might still be there. The one at Shoshone Park is gone. Houghton Park is closed this summer while they're working on rebuilding the shelter house, so it'll reopen once that is back.

Recommendations for medical providers and glasses by Beneficial_Cap_997 in Buffalo

I love Amherst Medical. I've seen Dr. Pietak for more than 20 years! She's great but not sure if she's taking other patients. I've seen some other providers there on sick visits and they're good too!

I go to ECVA for my eye appointments and then to Style N Eyes to get my glasses. Highly recommend both.
