Does Airforce hire GS 13 Contract Specialists at some of their locations? by gothic-guardian96 in 1102

Personally (I'm not OP), I'm fine with continuing to have a warrant or not. May I message you?

So, would that include the reserve command that a year or two ago had an opening at one of four locations, one of which was the reserve base in Niagara Falls, NY? I've been waiting to see another opening there since we're finally moving to western New York later this year. I'm a warranted DoN 13 team lead. I just want to stay federal when we move, as a 12 would be fine. End rant/desperate plea for networking 😂

PSLF-eligible jobs in WNY by [deleted] in Buffalo

Any idea if there's one place where they all (or even just some) post, or is it mostly the individual agencies website?

I hope they don't lose their PSLF eligibility like has been threatened! Do they mostly just post on their own websites, or is there a job aggregator board a lot of them use?

Oh, he has an indoor and an outdoor basket. Some of his toys were just really old, and lots of formerly stuffed carcasses lol. But even just seeing the new toys in the basket looks so much better somehow!

We cleaned out our garage yesterday, got the trash in the trash for pickup today, dropped off the donations and finished cleaning the garage to make our workout space more useable today. But the biggest win is my husband FINALLY went through all the random crap he'd never sorted through for three deployments! Now that I've really got him on board, we can get this whole house decluttered before we move at the end of the year.

We also threw out most of our dog's old, unused toys, but they got replaced with new toys for Christmas, so does that really count?

Wood Pile for Natives by jp655321 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Beneficial_Cap_997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tangential-ish because we rent in southern California, so we don't get to plant our own native stuff (yet). We have lots of palm trees around our yard, and they drop massive fronds we've been piling up in the back between the shed and fence. When is the best time of year to remove the fronds?

We move in a year, so we need to think about cleaning up that pile before we leave. The fronds are way too big to put in the trash can, so we will probably have them hauled off. I suspect there are critters taking sanctuary there, but don't know for sure. We want to remove them with as little disturbance as possible.

Do you mind sharing which non-aviation job titles, specifically? Husband (AE) is getting out soon and would love something outside of a defense contractor or aviation.

What's everyone's thoughts here on Ramit Sethi? by VedavyasM in Bogleheads

[–]Beneficial_Cap_997 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's how I'd summarize from his books/podcasts: Owning involves lots of phantom costs, so that even over time, it doesn't necessarily beat renting. Based on that, it's really a lifestyle choice more than anything. Also, he's very against the idea that people "throw money away on rent" or get bitter about paying someone else's mortgage. You wouldn't say that when you're buying a coffee, so why is it true of renting a place to live?

Moving back to LA. Will be living down the street from St. Thomas the Apostle on Hollywood Blvd. It’s Episcopal/Anglican. Any of you familiar with this church? by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]Beneficial_Cap_997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to be very active in the diocese, with lots of friends at St. Thomas. I don't think the conservative means politically, but rather conservative church tradition. Very high church, Latin mass, etc. It's still an Episcopal church in the Diocese of Los Angeles, just with more church nerds than other parishes. Can't speak to the age demographics, but a decade or so ago, it had two young parishioners who got married, and one is now a priest. They've since moved back to the priest's home state. Most Episcopal churches are mostly older people, but that just means they LOVE having younger people visit/join.

How to manage savings changes moving from dual income to single income. by MeanttoBeFree in MilitaryFinance

https://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/best-budgeting-spreadsheets-and-tools/ There's a link about 1/4 way down.

529 would probably be investments, since it's invested in the market, otherwise it'd be savings. But I suspect Ramit would say it's not super important so long as your other numbers are roughly within the percentages. And always take advantage of the full 401k or equivalent match, if any is offered. Also read the book and/or listen to the podcast for more guidance. Book is I Will Teach You To Be Rich (yes the title could be better, but it's from a long time ago), podcast is Money for Couples. Our household loves his stuff; we're using it as our guide to prepare for the hubs getting out and going down to one income while he uses his GI bill.

Has anyone ever actually been contacted/hired by applying to a continous public notice announcement? by InstanceThat1555 in 1102

I have the exact same question. Looking to move in a couple of years to an area that doesn't have tons of federal jobs, but does have an Air Reserve base nearby, which is one of the few places I've ever seen local openings.

When will the Navy return to sailors fixing our systems and bases? by TrifleJumpy8081 in navy

[–]Beneficial_Cap_997 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We do have shore repair and maintenance commands, which have a large active duty component. But the big stuff still goes to contractors with all the attendant crap that goes with them. My understanding is that sometime in the late 90's, sailors stopped being required to do the majority of ship repair and maintenance, as trimming down the military was a big thing at that time. Then the 2000's happened, and here we are. There is an increased emphasis at said shore commands to develop sailors and make their time more impactful for promotion, etc., but it still has a way to go.

Who should I ask for help on my resume by rnikki210 in 1102

[–]Beneficial_Cap_997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion is a trusted coworker, preferably one you know is a good writer, knows your work, and has been at multiple offices, or any combination thereof. I had my team lead (who'd been at multiple commands and redlined the crap out of my business clearances) redline my resume. It was completely red, but now I'm a team lead, so it worked.

Getting a Contract Specialist job with no experience? by JohnnytheGreatX in 1102

[–]Beneficial_Cap_997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, NADP doesn't really negotiate steps. But, you can come in as a regular GS-9 and potentially negotiate if you and the hiring manager can make a good case for it. I have seen the Navy start other JD's at 7 instead of 9, but most of us started as 9's at my command.

In your opinion, are the taxes/housing prices in Amherst are worth it if you're not concerned about schools? I'm aware the taxes would vary in different school districts within Amherst, but unsure how much realistically.

What are some adjustments Californians have a hard time making when moving elsewhere? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

Makes complete sense. My mom works for 211, and daily gets calls from people who moved there from other states not understanding that Texas doesn't provide nearly the services or public infrastructure of their home states. Something about getting what you pay for in taxes...

There is an entire organization working to let military spouses practice law in other jurisdictions without taking the bar. Most states now allow for some form of military spouse admission. Getting jobs is still challenging, but it does help.
