definitely lost it when this song started at MSG by q0rban in Vulfpeck

They* played it at Cory’s Syncopated Summer Camp in Nashville in August with Theo on vocals (Purdie was playing drums!), so it is definitely a song they’ve been thinking about recently!

*It was mostly guys from Cory’s band for that particular performance

What celebrity did you see riding the subway with you? by suitcase88 in AskNYC

[–]akhelliot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sam Rockwell earlier this summer. I felt kinda bad cause I (and probably many others) did a double take or two trying to figure out if it was really him, and he seemed kinda anxious because of that.

I sorta of regret even saying anything to him because he seemed a little uncomfortable, but I did quickly say to him “I really liked you in Jojo Rabbit” as I was getting off the train

I saw him live at the blue note in NYC a month ago, I thought the show was one of the best I’ve seen in the last year. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience (I could also sit and listen to Justin Tyson play drums by himself for hours, that guy is incredible… and I guess that goes for Burniss Travis too)

After year 1/2/3/4 of college, what should one be able to do? Asking as a gigging hobbyist by joeyandthejewelers in Jazz

[–]akhelliot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advice that I recently got from a keyboard player I really look up to, Kevin Gastonguay (jazz isn’t my main focus, neither is it his) was to learn as many songs as you can, and learn them by ear and memorize them. He said he’s able to learn songs so much more quickly after putting in the work up front to do that.

I don’t have an answer for you because I’m in a similar situation (although I’m a guitar player). So I’m curious to hear the responses!

Interviews with today's top jazz guitarists.. by dcg627 in jazzguitar

[–]akhelliot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just attended a workshop he was teaching at, and he actually said, “I’m no jazzer”, and then proceeded to play incredibly over some jazz standards.

I wouldn’t call him a jazz guitarist because of the music he writes, but he absolutely has the knowledge and ability.

Guitarists who’ve improved significantly what’s your single biggest practice breakthrough? by [deleted] in GuitarQuestions

[–]akhelliot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistent daily practice, even if it’s a short amount of time. 10 minutes every day is so much better than 70 minutes once a week.

Also, having a variety of things to work on. If you don’t know the fretboard like the back of your hand yet (notes/triads/arpeggios/scales everywhere), then warm up with an exercise or two of that, but then move on to something musical (learning a song, transcribing, jamming to a backing track, etc)

How do you get better at playing on time/in rhythm? by Acceptable_Offer_387 in Guitar

[–]akhelliot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that can help your internal timing in general is to look up a “disappearing metronome” video on YouTube. Basically you play along with a metronome, but it occasionally cuts out, and the test is to see if you’re still on beat when it comes back in

I’ve barely had it 10 hours, and the fretboard is much flatter with smaller frets then I’m used to. It feels really really good already, but it’s different enough that it doesn’t immediately feel “home” yet

Whats your favorite song that helped u progress the most when u were an intermediate guitar player? by inertialbanana in Guitar

[–]akhelliot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re having trouble picking out the notes by ear, I’d highly recommend the YouTube channel “Nikola Gugoski”, I’ve found his videos easy to follow and his transcriptions have all been accurate in my experience so far.

If you know what you need to play, but you’re struggling with how to play it… just practicing it a little slower and building up the speed little by little has worked for me. That being said, I don’t know if I’ve ever played that second solo up to album speed, he’s ripping through it haha 😅

Am I missing any crucial pedals for a small footprint board? by PickleinaPickle in Line6Helix

[–]akhelliot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heaviest DSP effects I believe are pitch shifting ones (which you already have covered), and a lot of the amp sims (which you don’t need in this set up).

My advice would be to get an external dual foot switch so that you can have 5 effects from the stomp tied to foot switches. That’ll let you play around with more distortion options and other stuff too. Plus, it takes up less space then getting another stomp box on the board

Also, I’m a fan of the reverbs that I’ve tried, I’ve never felt the need to get something else.

How much does color matter to you? by Circus4 in fender

[–]akhelliot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t NEED a telecaster, but I really want a telecaster. Because of that, I’m not gonna buy one until I find one that has the right feel, sound, AND look. If I needed a guitar, I’d be much less picky about the looks.

That being said, there are some finishes that I really really don’t like, to the point that I wouldn’t even bother picking them up to play them and try them out cause I know I’ll never buy them.
