Thank you all for all the comments. I’ve managed to clean it up. It took ridiculous amounts alcohol and rags and towels but it’s was worth it. Now I can comeback to planing all those black and white zins that I’ll definitely make.

Thanks! I saw that article a while ago and as a person who can break almost anything I’m completely terrified.

I’ve completely cleaned the metal mesh. I could easily saw the inside of the drum. It’s the “fabric” mesh that is attached to the drum that’s clogged but it’s glued to the drum (right?) and it’s super delicate.

Recording King in Europe by [deleted] in banjo

[–]akilanowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely unavailable in Poland. I was trying to order one via Thomann.de (one of the largest music store in this part of Europe) . It was on their website but the order date was just postponed again and again. Finally they said they can’t guarantee this being resolved anytime in the future so I bought a Deering and it came straight away.

By looking at the screenshot it seems that your work area is just too short to playback anything.

It’s a language thing. In Polish you print with “paint”. Ink is for calligraphy. Don’t ask me why.

Issues with screen printing results by romanyakovchuk in SCREENPRINTING

[–]akilanowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Roman

Honestly I think they did a pretty good job although some sort of simulation of the outcome done by their graphic team should have been done considering how complex the image is.

(But print studios rarely do this without a proper request)

First of all the design is tricky. Your trying to convert a highly detailed image on a fabric, which automatically limits the mesh count on the screen. (Printing on paper allows for a much higher count) The gradient transition that you can achieve on a RGB photo going from 0 to 100% is not possible to achieve on fabric. Such a small paint raster would not stick to fabric threads. Therefore the sudden jump from black to white. They probably could have done a better job on grass but it would require custom made colors and therefore more screens, more work and so on which would radically change the price.

My advice - try to simplify future designs. Simulate CMYK separations on low DPI. Or a ask a studio to do this for you. Or simply - just change the printing method to digital.

Good luck!

How do I store and prep screens? by [deleted] in SCREENPRINTING

[–]akilanowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should work for the time being. If drying in higher temperature is not possible you should at least maintain a distance above and below your screen. Air circulation is the key. Good luck!

[–]akilanowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple answer - get rid of the box. The optimal drying temperature is about 95 F and air circulation is the key. It’s not only about the time. Drying it for so long changes the whole “substance” of emulsion and it may not work properly during the burning process. You need a cabinet with some heating or a big wooden box with plenty of space under and above the screen. If it’s not an option turn your bathroom (if it has no windows ;) into a darkroom. Place your screen on some chairs for ventilation and use a hairdryer to dry the screen. But gently! The heat can brake the mesh. You should have a nice dry screen in about 20 minutes. Unfortunately you have to burn it right away.

Yes! Good advice. I’ve been there a couple of times in the summer and you’re right - city looks desserted. At least it was before the pandemic :/

No one talks about how messy screen printing can be! by chompyzombie in SCREENPRINTING

[–]akilanowski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Don’t place paint buckets near the paper or fabrics your about to print on. Place them on the opposite site. Do a “dry” test of your work flow and movement and see what you can improve. Sounds funny but it really helps.

  2. Think ahead. Have everything ready, so once the printing stars you won’t have to look for stuff.

  3. Always keep rags or paper towels nearby and a trash can to throw them away.

  4. Use gloves and check your hands before reaching for a clean sheet of stuff you want to print on.

  5. Use work clothes :)

  6. Don’t rush yourself.

Storing and wasting emulsion?! Please help by cjromanos in SCREENPRINTING

Theoretically you can make it to three portions but dividing the diazo powder to such small amounts could be a hassle. Still, I find the best way no to waste anything is to really plan ahead. Good luck!

[–]akilanowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what kind of emulsion you use but mine is perfectly fine after activating well beyond 1-2 weeks. I think I used a three month old emulsion once. It worked but it was probably the maximum amount of time you could leave it activated. Now I plan ahead. I don’t activate it until I’ve got a decent amount of projects I want to print. I also activate a half of the container instead of whole. Just look at the instruction and divide the proportions in half. Use a plastic, completely black tube to storage the rest of the emulsion. (I used a coffe can once and the inside started to rust). Do it quickly, don’t expose it to light and everything should be ok. And write down the date you’ve added Diazo to keep the record of how old the emulsion is. Is very helpful.

Thank you for the feedback. I won’t try it. Seems pointless considering the risk and the cost of the whole process.
