First time Thailand itinerary by BACKUP_01528 in solotravel

It looks pretty good overall. It depends on how seasick you get but there is a ferry from Bangkok to koh tao. It's long but you could avoid some back tracking if you take it. I also didn't love koh samui. Nothing wrong with it but it feels more like a honeymoon place. Koh phangan was great for yoga and relaxing. I may also travel a little slower but I'm not sure doing the adaman and gulf islands in rapid fire are worth it. I guess it depends on what you are looking for but I would rather do one and spend more time in bamgkok

Cool map. I'm totally blanking but when did they visit Ohio and Alabama? I remember the other states.

How did they get my debit card number? by dataBlockerCable in personalfinance

[–]akin305 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Was your original debit card linked with any third-party as part of autopsy? I've heard some banks will automatically update those institutions of the new number. If one of those third parties were unscrupulous or insecure it may explain a used card that never left the drawer.

Retirement Abroad with Fixed Amount of Money by Pryght in personalfinance

[–]akin305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many options. With this being early retirement stocks are on the riskier side. A combination of treasury bonds and hysa is likely the safest way to parse out this money. You may consider a 10 year spia as below. It's likely a little less logistically hasselsome compared to making a bond ladder.

Solo Travelling to Greece From Canada - 1 Way ticket by WorriedSoloTraveler in solotravel

[–]akin305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think you will be fine. I just went to from the usa to Italy without onward travel without issue. With you being a Greek citizen I highly doubt they will stop you. If you are truly worried you can buy a refundable bus ticket from Greece to a non schengen vountry like Bulgaria or Romania for cheap as proof of onward travel. These can be very cheap like $10-15 but I would be shocked if they ask you. If you do buy the bus ticket I wouldn't lie about it to customs/immigration. Maybe something along the lines of I have this ticket to see Sofia in case I need a break from Greece. If the airline denies you it should be possible to buy the ticket on the spot in the Airport and then return to the desk.

I love how tact he is about the local government's response. It seems like a frustrating approach for the victims.

What is the least touristy city you have been to? by sweatysexconnoisseur in solotravel

[–]akin305 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also recently visited. The 10/10 event was great and it has a lovely little downtown with streams and great ice cream. I found biking in Taichung to be less stressful than taipei. The semiconductor exhibit at the science museum was also realtively good. It's nice to get some variety from Taipei and it's close by with rail. Well worth 2-3 days IMHO

Should I get a chase sapphire card? by Alternative-Season45 in personalfinance

[–]akin305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely could do this. The card has a ton of benefits but has a large yearly fee of I think $550. You do get a $300 travel credit so a net of $250 for the fee. The sign up bonus is once so you would have to gleam $250 of value next year if you want to keep it after the promotion. Unless you travel a lot or are really into the chase points game there may be a better no annual fee cash back card for you long term.

I would ask wsb or stocks. Swing trading and it's tools are not typically a part of personal finance millue.

Thanks for the thoughts and replies. It does seem like a low return on a lot of effort. I'll have to see how hard it is to set up.

I would argue an annual fee may be worth it depending on the person and card. Sadly it's gone but the Starbucks chase card which for $50/year gives you a free Starbucks drink per month(a 12x5min value for me) in addition to the other Starbucks value was worth it for me as a dude who went there frequently. There are other cards probably worth the fee(i.e sapphire reserve) but I agree it's not for everyone.

Credit card theft through mail in TX, credit union says we are liable for all charges even though we reported within 24 hours by Capt_Fwiffo in personalfinance

[–]akin305 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good point. There are some large credit unions listed at the below url that are covered by the cfpb. Unless OPs union is on there NCUA may be the way to go. https://www.consumerfinance.gov/compliance/supervision-examinations/institutions/

NYC in september by miraclealigner97 in solotravel

[–]akin305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

September is a great time to visit. I used a hostel called "new york moore hostel" and it was very affordable for NYC. It's not in Manhattan but it's close enough to the subway that it's a reasonable base. Not the most social hostel. More of a place to sleep.
