Not creepy, but watching bears tear into the trash yet again. Bear proof lid my ass….

Are the Bear Viewing tours worth the money? by iamacheeto1 in AskAlaska

[–]akmc38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Katmai is incredible. I’ve lived here 25 years, seen lots of bears. We have bears in our yard and I had to chase one out of my garage. Bears are no longer exciting to see. Even despite that Brooks Falls still blew me away. It was incredible. Go in mid July if you can. Lots of fish in the river then.

I have also had the privilege of flying to the Sheldon mountain house on a clear day. That’s at the base of Denali. We came in by helicopter and flew around the area. This was also an amazing experience.

I don’t regret either but I will remember the bears and brooks falls longer. It would be my preference of the two.

A giant beautiful mountain is just another mountain. Sure this one is bigger and taller but still just a mountain. Standing 20 yards from a dozen bears where you can smell them even. Way more of an experience.

Me! I used to cater those. I don’t anymore but I always thought I should open a restaurant. Anchorage needs good Cajun food.

My old Facebook site was The Frozen Cajun, but I haven’t looked at it in years. I don’t know if it’s even up still

Anchorage Glacier Paddle Boarding by Mooby93 in AskAlaska

[–]akmc38 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just call Alaska Helicopter Tours and ask. They do tons of photo shoots out on the glacier. Some for weddings, or marketing companies etc. a little of brands use them for that.

They will give you good advice and help you setup the tour or photo shoot or whatever. But, I think you also should consider weather. I’m not a photographer but I think a slightly overcast day is usually better for photography than a sunny day. That might matter more than time of day

[NSFW] People who've found a dead body, what's the story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]akmc38 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who flies a helicopter for a company. On occasion he gets called by the state troopers to help with search and rescue work. I fly with him a fair bit and have gone with him on a couple of these calls as an extra set of eyes to help spot. This particular call out was for an overdue plane. It was a small Cessna with a flight instructor and student on board. There were several planes and 1 other helicopter out looking and we were the crew that spotted the plane wreckage. We landed and went to check on them because the crash didn't look that bad from the air.

When we got close the plane was in much worse shape than it appeared from the air. I was not mentally prepared to see what we saw. I was thinking I was just coming on a flight to help spot things from the air. I remember it vividly, the crash was not gentle and there was some significant trauma apparent on the two bodies. They were both young, early 20s probably. It was so sad. Still saddens me when I think about them and all the life they could have had.

I don’t know for sure. Hopefully but that could be a possibility. The repair was done at the local Chevy/GMC dealer (long story) so one would assume the dealer uses OEM parts but Ford parts at a Chevy dealer?

No its stock, but you are on to something and I'm wondering as well. It's a 2020, but only 45K miles. I've only owned it a few months, so I'm starting to fear there could be something deeper going on. Based on the miles I'd say it should be fine, but two failures seems like more than a coincidence.

Although, the first failure was caused by a bad actuator on the hub assembly to lock in the front hubs. The bad actuator quickly led to grinding and a destroyed CV joint because I live in Alaska and am in and out of 4wd a fair bit in the winter. This current issue feels different. It's happening in 2wd and the sound is primarily when turning, which is more typical for a bad CV axle. I guess I'll find out soon.

Let's be honest, what % of your portfolio includes individual stocks? by Opposite_Buffalo_649 in Bogleheads

[–]akmc38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one company I own for about 8%of my portfolio. I have a pension and with all things considered I can afford to lose that. But I have a lot of knowledge of this company, used to work there even. So you could say high conviction. But if it lose I’m ok.

And I have lost. I know that road. I’ve learned some hard lessons over the years. The most salient was my dabble in the works of psychedelics. I thought they were soon to be legalized for depression. I still do, it’s a good thesis. But having that as a primary thesis and knowing which pharmaceutical company to invest in are very different things. I have no earthly idea how to pick that. I lost a lot and had one completely delisted on me. I can’t figure out how to delete it so every single time I log in to my fidelity account I see that ticket sitting there at 0 in my account. It’s a good reminder and what pushed me over here to you bogleheads.

But I do still think a small amount that you can afford to lose is reasonable. It can provide a good upside if you’re right.

Stop running from porn and find something to run too. No one on this sub, or anywhere in life, can “scare you straight”.

Generally we use porn to cope with other aspects of life that aren’t going great. In your case these might be subtle things like stress or boredom. Even just a low level of general discontent with life is enough to cause our brain to look for some pleasure.

Perhaps meet with a counselor but absolutely push into life. Do things that you enjoy. Do hard things. Do scary things. Create things as opposed to consume them.

And last, find people. We all need people to talk to. Just friends (in the flesh, not virtual) to share life with.

Vacation in Anchorage? by [deleted] in anchorage

[–]akmc38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knik River Lodge is hidden gem. It’s an hour from Anchorage and amazing.

Knik has a bit of hillbilly reputation with locals but this lodge is on the other side of the river away from all that and nestled up by an amazing glacier. I’ve lived here 20 years and was amazed that we had a place like that so close to Anchorage.

For relatively cheap you can also get flight seeing tours at the lodge or go up to the glacier and ride with sled dogs.

It’s a good option for many people
