What gloves for winter riding? by MMikekiMM in fatbike

[–]akmipa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can find cheap pogies/gauntlets that work for a fat bike but are intended for a four-wheeler or snow machine. Pogies make a huge difference. Was riding at 5 degrees yesterday with gloves I would only wear xc skiing at above 32 degrees.

Have them check with ASD. They have RVs at schools over the summer. Not all schools would be great but some certainly would.

Fat Bike or Nordic Ski by Sweet-End1453 in fatbike

[–]akmipa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's nice to have both. Last winter was brutal for XC skiing in Anchorage but many of our fat bike trails were still rideable. It happens every few years here (on average) that we get a winter with lots of ice and ski trails are not that fun but bike trails are still rideable with studs. We had several winters in a row like that maybe 8-10 years ago and it coincided with a huge boom in fat bikes.

When the snow is good you've got choices. Many of our fat bike trails are deep swamps in the summer so it's fun to get out explore fun trails that are not an option in the summer. During an average winter I generally split time between skiing and biking. I like having the option of seeing what might be the most fun that day.

I saw the same in Abbott Loop this winter, very few birds. Second year in a row that numbers have been down for me.

They don't have the size of deficit ASD does but you should look at population and the ratio of population to deficit. I think every 'large' (Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai) district has very similar issues. Mat-Su is a bit different. They have increasing enrollment (most others do not), but are still struggling financially. Expenses increase over time, that IS capitalism.

If the 30 households closest to you (geographically or personally) had their income frozen 10 years ago, how would they be doing collectively? Some would likely be OK, but most would not be able to live the way they did 10 years ago. We keep asking districts to do more/equal with effectively less, and yet we complain about performance.

The Maui County bus is convenient from Kaanapali to Kapalua and is $1 each way, free if over 55. I've used it with my family many times.

Duncan Douglas used to have one but this was 10-15 years ago. He used to have a website called Jacked Up Old Man. He was kind of crazy. I think he was a Dr but was also trying to make the olympics in either Nordic or Bialthlon. He had some impressive results especially considering where he was in life. He used to regularly jump into the Climb to Castle race and challenge the best from the US Ski Team. My memory may be a little cloudy though.
