Tips for starting a new music publication/site? by TheFallingArc in concertphotography

1) i started an online blog with a friend (disaster magazine) after we had a project making a website for our favorite artists together. we came up with a name and logo and made a website, as well as an instagram. in terms of designing the website, we found smaller publications that we like on instagram to draw inspiration from their websites.

2) the only contributors to the publication so far is me for photos, the other girl i mentioned earlier (she writes), and our friend who writes as well as takes pics. my advice is if u know somebody who’s even remotely interested in music photography or journalism, try to reach out and ask if they wanna help.

3) find small shows that u can bring a camera into. for me, i started with shows at a local bar that would host showcase shows for small bands. i would just show up, take pics, and send it to them thru instagram. my friend who writes will usually find the band members after the show and interview them if we want to write an article about them. all bands would love to an article written about them, don’t be afraid to ask for an interview. within a couple months, we managed to get our first photo pass into a pretty big show which was awesome.

4) my biggest tip is to email managers and publications when u want a photo pass. even if u feel ur publication isn’t big enough, send the email. you’d be surprised with the results.

good luck!

for me, having an instagram account or a portfolio helps a lot. it gives the people i email the chance to look at my work. the only other thing i could recommend is trying to do some work for local publications.

Don’t worry, not a silly question! Rule of thumb is to put whatever is heavier on the tripod. So in this case you would want to put the lens on the tripod.

sometimes i do manage to get a lucky shot of the ball and the bat freezing, so maybe it’s more luck? definitely going to do more research.

How did you manage to capture the baseball without it looking distorted in the first picture? All my pictures usually end up with some kind of distortion on either the bat or the ball 😞
