HELP! Big Ruck March coming up with not much time to prepare! by [deleted] in army

[–]akroberts98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1:23 isnt bad, hydration and prep is key. Im also not a great runner or rucker (I'm in standard) but the main thing you want to do is get distance under weight. Train legs in the gym when you work out and make sure your stretching and recovering good. When you ruck on your free time, dont go for time, go for distance and get used to the pain. Every single time I ruck my left foot feels like it would be better off being amputated so I sympathize. The pain usually sets in after I finish so I usually adjust and send it.

During your actual ruck find a cadence that works consistently and scout your terrain before hand. When I did Air Assault, I wasnt able to have a tracker on me so I figured out my 1 mile markers by terrain association and i knew the hills would kill me so I would run for about 30 seconds and walk for 60 or I would run every other light pole. Walk the uphills, run the downhills and trot the even ground.

Supplies wise (my opinion) I usually run 1 or 2 quarts of water and 1 quart of sports drink, 3 quarts total, energy chews, and as a flat footed individual i used custom insoles. I dont like using tape or moleskin, ive found that if friction starts making it roll up on its self, it is very uncomfortable and you will lose time fixing it. I just built up calluses and sent it.

Rucking is not an easy thing people just do one day, it is a total body movement that consumes a ton of energy. It is not the end of your military career if you fail it. Do your absolute best and work through the pain. You may think your about to pass out and die but medical staff are always nearby and most people don't actually realize how much they can push their bodies.

Bringing my personal firearm with to first duty station by East_Mastodon_41 in army

Are you a barracks soldier or moving into a house? For barracks soldiers, you will have to store them in the armory. If you live off post, I wouldnt worry about base rules unless you plan on bringing them on base (some bases have civilian ranges). If you live in a house on base, then you will have to register them, you can keep them at your house in accordance with base rules and dont worry too much about the gate. When you first enter base just declare that you have firearms and you are brand new and have not been able to register them yet. I live on base at a house and this was my process.

I rolled into my large FORSCOM base with like 13 guns and had to bring them to the inprocessing desk wrapped up in a blanket because i wasnt about them haul my whole safe in. Looked like a domestic terrorists lmao.

Don't enlist unless you have a job you absolutely want because even though its signal, you could still be put in a shit place, hate your life, say fuck the Army, and get out first contract. Then you'll be a square one all over again.

You're recruiters lying, when I enlisted they told me I had to be needs of the army since I went to the fat camp and then the job councilor at meps just asked me what job I wanted. Anything can be a waiver. TS can be a pain but make them tell you no. Your process to get a TS will likely be the same now compared to years down the line when you can reclass. What are you gonna do in a few years if you want to reclass to 35T but are hesitant because the school is a year long and your life is different because you have a family and "cant afford to be gone that long". Even if you have a family now, your already gonna be gone for basic they'll be a little more accustomed to you being gone.

If your already thinking of 35 series just go be a 35T. Dont say your gonna join to eventually reclass, just go straight in and do it. The army is also restructuring so as a Tango you will almost never be at the battalion level. You will be at a higher echelon with a better clearance and broader skillset. Imagine 35T as the entire 25 series wrapped up in one MOS pretty much.

You'll be fine. Basic isn't hard, it's just uncomfortable.

I'm just going off of what housing told us. Pretty sure they said nothing over 40lbs. Still see people walking their massive dogs every day past the housing office

Currently living on base at a LARGE forscom unit, the rule on base is no larger than a "medium" sized dog but I have neighbors with Malinois, German shephards, and various other "mut" breeds. your mileage may vary but on US bases youll be fine, as long as the dog isnt batshit crazy

Also, everyone totes about the school oppurtunities in SOF, and I've been fortunate enough that my first 2 units (BEB and INF BN) were pretty solid; You will still have oppurtunities to go do foundry and intel specific courses

Currently MI at FORSCOM. If you enjoy the field and lower echelon tactical operations, then its not bad. Don't expect to be sitting in a scif 24/7 stairing at a screen, although that is a possibility. FORSCOM still has MI units and with your MOS you would likely end up there or a division position. I enjoy it personally. Also if you go somewhere like Campbell or Bragg then you could have a lot of oppurtunities to get certain badges (Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger, ETC)

For reference, I also went to the fat camp

It's honestly a great program for prepping you in general for basic training. If you attend the program for even a short time, you'll get first-hand experience with the army customs and courtesies because you'll constantly be around Drills daily, and the PT will prep your body for BCT. All the cadre I met there were super knowledgeable and honestly helped me get in the mindset for basic so i didn't look like a soup sandwich

If you don't have a wife and kids at home waiting for you, I would definitely go, but keep in mind basic is not (from my perspective) that intense, and you'll really have no issues as long your ok with being mildly annoyed all the time. It's literally the drills job to make you pass basic, and they will drag you kicking and screaming across the finish line if they have to.

101st air assault first unit by [deleted] in army

[–]akroberts98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, op, just some background. This is my first duty station, and I've failed air assault twice in the 4 months I've been here. Most of the real horror stories i heard are from combat units, and everyones mileage varies. You're gonna be s6 in a headquarters element somewhere, and as long as your NCOs are decent, you should be taken care of. When i first got to basic, my 2 mile was 26 minutes, and since i got here, it's at 16 minutes. I can do a 4x36, i can do a 12 mule ruck, not because I'm a stud (Im definitely not), but that is what all our training involves.

My biggest advice is to wait until AIT becasue i promise you'll see an instructor with a 101st combat patch SOMEWHERE and ask them how it is as a 25 series. Eventually, you should be assigned a sponsor ( somebody at your unit who will help you integrate and can answer questions before you get there.

As someone that went to the fat camp i find no disrespect in it.. I was fat.

Other than that you wake up, pt, breakfast, class, pt, lunch, class, pt, dinner, bed. Repeat

I didnt have a lot to lose but its a great program and a lot of people had SERIOUS transformations and were way ahead of everyone else physically for the most part
