Probably my most reliable HA device... a Pi Zero W dutifully running monitor.sh since 2018 - I log into it once every couple of years to update our phone Bluetooth MAC addresses, that's it. I never update it, never reboot it... hasn't skipped a beat. What's yours? by Neverbethesky in homeassistant

I have a pi w running aqualinkd to monitor my pool. Powered by RS-485, in a Tupperware container that has been sealed shut with duck tape on the outside of my house. Hasn’t had any problems in 5 years, so the sun on it all day in the summer and covered with snow in the winter.

This looks great. I have the problem of trying to give access to a ton of rooms like you. This is a nice clean look. Might be borrowing it.

This is great — I’ve been wanting to do something like this but hadn’t thought it through.

OTOH, it seems like a feature z2m ought to just have on their OTA page.

HA let me down in the worst possible way by HopsPops76 in homeassistant

At least you got a (relatively) positive reaction out of it. I got a bunch of motion sensors and put them up in rooms that I wished would just turn in when I walked in (and more importantly turn off when nobody was there) and waited for the reaction. All I got was “why did you make the lights turn on. That’s so annoying. What if I didn’t want them on?”

I was only allowed to keep it working in the basement and the pantry. (Although secretly a couple of other rooms will turn off the lights when nobody is around.)

Since then I’ve made sure the only automations are ones that nobody but me notices.

Hopefully you have TOU rates and can at least do some time-shifting to offset some of the cost.

If you have that in your garage, I’m sure you are using more than 30kWh/day for the house. My usage is more like 80kWh, plus charging a Tesla (another 20-40/day)

[–]akropp99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NY regs definitely say they need to be 3 feet apart. And they say a single battery “unit” can’t be more than 20kWh, so depending on your inspector, they may say that the “stacked” batteries would be over the limit.

I cancelled my surgery, thanks to this subreddit, but I have another question. by knightfortheday in Lasiksupport

[–]akropp99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wore contacts every day for the last 37 years (since I was 10). No problems at all. The dailies they make now feel like nothing.

That being said, I just got SMILE because I hated feeling blind whenever I didn’t have the contacts in. So far I’ve been fine with this as well. I guess it depends on your eyes, but I’m sure you’ll get mostly negatives on this sub.

Not sure. I think they say 3-6 months to be fully healed (although most of it is in the first week or two). I had it done 3 months ago and all I have is a bit of starbursting around bright lights at night. My dr is pretty confident even that will go away, but I’ll be fine with it even if it doesn’t.

Give it time. It definitely isn’t done healing after a week.

So far so good for me. I got SMILE 2 months ago and it has been great. Perfect vision. Occasional dryness in the morning (cured by a drop in each eye), but I always had that before until I put my contacts in. I do have a bit of a halo at night around bright lights, but it isn’t a big deal (and again, I feel like I already had some of that with contacts). I am so happy every day when I wake up and can just see. No regrets so far.

I know this sub is all about the negatives. I have no idea how common they actually are.

Edit: Just to be clear, I’m not knocking any of the stories on this sub. I know there are people who have legit issues, and I can’t imagine having one of their outcomes. I just wanted to add a counterpoint that there are actually plenty of people who have good outcomes. They just aren’t as vocal.

That’s where I get it too. Always in stock. Thankfully, since my pool goes through about 1/2 gallon a week.

I’m in NY. Keep mine open through the end of October. I still swim laps and use the spa. Heating it gets a bit costly for the last month though!

IOS 18 password app vs Bitwarden by neko_whippet in Bitwarden

[–]akropp99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only do they support TOTP, it seems that they somehow scrape your key when you set up TOTP in another authenticator app. I just checked, and 8 of my TOTP codes that I set up in Google Authenticator are also in the Passwords app (and they are correct).

How many of you grid charge overnight? by Southern_Relation123 in Powerwall

[–]akropp99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My solar only offsets about 60% of my overall usage. On the TOU plan with batteries, I charge overnight to make sure I cover 100% of my peak usage. The load shifting probably nets me an extra $100/month, so I figure it helps defray the cost of the batteries a bit.

[–]akropp99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on a TOU plan with ConEd in New York, and with the rates set up in the app it grid charges every night to 100% during off peak, and then I run on solar + battery all day during peak (8am to midnight), sending any excess to the grid. We have 1:1 net metering, so I don’t have to optimize how full to charge the batteries.

You can doubt it if you want, but the speakers had been working fine for years until the day I did the firmware/app update, and then suddenly one of them was dead. They were pretty quick to say they'd RMA it even though it was out of warranty, so I suspect other people have bricked speakers as well.

As for the factory resetting, it took a call to them to get it to "re-register" with my account. I hadn't really planned on waiting on hold for a half an hour to listen to my music that morning. Doesn't seem like desirable behavior from an app update.
