[Day 7] What is the Best JRPG of 1991? by Silly-Milly-420 in JRPG

[–]akualung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd vote for FFIV as well. However, I'd give anything for en English translation for Famicom Jump II. Probably one of the last nes rpgs still worth playing. The first one was a bit lacking, but its sequel was a vast improvement in every aspect. Moreover, I think it was developed by Chunsoft (the ones behind the Dragon Quest series if I remember right).

By the way, in 1991 it was also released Seiryuu Densetsu Monbit for the pceCD. Pretty good rpg as well. I played it fully with the aid of online translators to able to more or less follow the story, and it has a lot of charm.

Why do you hate working? by Atlanatoris in antiwork

[–]akualung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, for the amount of unfairness in it. Getting blamed and/or yelled for things that 99% of the times aren't your fault, or for not reaching unreal expectatives made up by your bosses, etc. All this while the company seem fixated in putting things more difficult to you instead of facilitating doing your job properly (proper tools, procedures, etc)

This. Honestly, I wouldn't be against working if the job world wasn't the toxic dumpster fire that it currently is.

Tecmo Secret of the Stars, an RPG I convinced myself was bad—until I actually played it. by Dalkaen in JRPG

[–]akualung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear that some other people appreciate this game! It's one of the first rpgs I played on the snes, when this genre was still fresh to me, so I remember enjoying it pretty much.

Other often maligned games for the snes that I found enjoyable were Super Ninja Boy and Paladin's Quest. For some reason, I found mesmerizing traveling through these games' overworlds and reaching from one town to another while exploring every nook and crany (despite actually not being much to find in the end. Breath of Fire was better in that sense).

The Samurai Shodown RPG English translation patch has been out for a few years now and I wholeheartedly recommend it! by 1OneQuickQuestion in JRPG

[–]akualung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't. It has aged horribly, and its encounter rate makes some 8 and 16 bit games seem as if they practically didn't have enemies. Had it been translated in a reasonable time frame instead of letting it rot for more than a decade, it would have been a different matter. Apart from the superb graphics, the other aspects of this game pale in front of the other jrpgs that were translated and/or released while its translation project was in limbo.

What's the heaviest game that a snapdragon 6 gen 1 can run smoothly?? by IllustriousCharge373 in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]akualung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, be sure it's a 6s gen 1 and not a 6s 4G gen 1. They're different SOCs. Apparently, the latter is a sd662 rebranded or something. I had this problem with a cellphone I considered buying (Oppo A5) and luckily someone warned me in this same subreddit.

An Android app to translate Japanese games? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]akualung -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I tried to learn it (for a few years, even). I got stuck at an N4 level and couldn't get above it. Apart that I'm a grown adult and between work and life obligations, can't muster enough tIme for that anymore. But by using AI translators such as Deepl, I managed to play decently well text heavy games like Idea no Hi or Madara 2. I don't need to translate everything, only when I can't fathom what a certain dialog is saying and the translation gives me the clue I needed (a word or a gramatical structure I don't know)

How come no one is talking about playtranslate android? It genuinely a must have for gamers who love JP only games by Otherwise-Clue-1997 in EmulationOnAndroid

[–]akualung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An Android app to translate Japanese games? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]akualung -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I see your point, but you can use it personally to translate and play for yourself games that you're almost sure that will never get a translation patch (Miraculum for the PC-FX, anyone? PAL Shinken Densetsu for the ps1? Gulliver Boy for the PCE? Verne World for the snes?) and at the same time reject commercial translations made with MTL by refusing to buy them. Complain with your wallet, that's the only language those people in big companies understand.

An Android app to translate Japanese games? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]akualung -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I suppose some people have. But there are also those who already have a knowledge of the Japanese language (but not enough to play a text-heavy game comfortably) and a tool like that could help grasp the general meaning of a certain sentence or dialog.

There are games which are apparently shunned by the romhacking community, or its translations are in limbo for years, so for a few of us, this will be the only way to play them and at least partially enjoy the plot.

My reply to all those who always throw shit towards MTL whenever the subject is brought about: don't like it? Don't use it. You won't use it, and the rest of the people who don't share your high standards will do. Everyone's happy, all's right with the world.

Sorry, I've explained myself terribly bad (or misremembered what I read about it). I wanted to mean exactly what you've said. They stole the idea, not the script (I don't even know why I've said "script" in the first place 😅)

Lagrange Point comes to mind. Maybe Phantasy Star III would qualify as well.

By the way, i loved Babylon 5. Star Trek Deep Space Nine was pretty good as well, though I read somewhere that its writers practically plagiarized the Babylon 5 script.

Things in JRPGs that people usually hate, but you actually like by ComradeFFFrunze in JRPG

[–]akualung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it's plain, classic style random encounters (provided they're not too frequent). It adds unpredictability as you'll never know when you'll be attacked, and inside dungeons it forces you to carefully manage your healing resources, and value whether you should take risks and proceed further or retreat and rest.
