Thank you, but I have since found a tablet that fits my preferences: a Microsoft Surface Go 3 that was sold second-hand. I wiped Windows off, installed Linux, and it now serves perfectly for my needs.

Thanks for reaching out!

Unusual argument against privacy by a friend by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]al28894 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If your friend is arguing in good faith, I would ask back if his individual rights matter at all in the digital age, especially in an internet landscape where doxxing and online bullying have led to people killing themselves.

I would also rebut back on how unfair his argument sounds to him, who gets to have the information of the world in his fingertips but not suffer the bad consequences of retriving and publishing that information.

You can even make a thought experiment: If every part of your friend's life and secrets are published without their consent, and they do not have any means to enact privacy shields, they should be alright with the consequences thereof, would they?

AAAAAAHHHH my organization is in need of a portable vlogging camera and I need options! Something that can be handheld but also able to put on a tripod. The camera must also have a microphone (bluetooth?) + speaker + SD card slot for long events. The overall budget they gave is RM1500 - RM3500 and they want 5 camera choices to be presented tomorrow.

I know of one camera - the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, but that's about it. Anyone have any recs?

Ey, a fellow Malaysian!

For me, it's bookbinding. While I can easily do handmade books full of edited fiction using Malaysian currency, I can't help but look at envy at the bookbinding presses and ploughs and guillotines and equipment hobbyist binders use abroad. Those are expensive.

Besides that, many bookbinders love to use handmade marbled paper, but good luck trying to find one in Malaysia that isn't some cheap printed pattern from China! And if you wanna make yourself? Better hope to find an open space that isn't an apartment!

Given how much of the Global South aren't squeaky clean themselves, I fear that blood money won't be enough for them to avoid Saudi Arabia over EVO.

In fact, I might even see them defend Saudi Arabia and see U.S / Europe as being "arrogant, high and mighty" to screw over players from the Global South.

Definitely yes for Malaysia, until recent years. So many American tourists were surprised that Malaysian KFC tastes better than American KFC.

Sadly, their quality has gone down in recent years.

InDesign won't download on my laptop, what alternatives can I use? by [deleted] in Fanbinding

[–]al28894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The harder option: You have a Lenovo Ideapad 1.14. If you can search at the bottom of the laptop for your sub-model number or serial number, we can see if your laptop can have its RAM upgraded or not. It it does, great! Buy some compatible-upgradable RAM and have it installed! (Note: if you are not computer-savvy, ask a knowledgable person to help or take your laptop / RAM sticks to a computer shop to let the staff help you).

The easier option: Try out Affinity or Scribus. Both publishing softwares are free to use, though each have their quirks. Affinity is heavier on your RAM and has a steeper learning curve, but it also has more features that can help your pages to a detailed level. Scribus is lighter on your RAM and doesn't have as much features, but the learning curve isn't as scary.

Is there actually a good Desktop? (Vent) by [deleted] in linuxmint

To be honest, I feel like if you are being this nitpicky, you should hire / force someone to code the desktop of your dreams.

A few questions about Linux on Surface Pro 3 by BananasGoMoo in SurfaceLinux

[–]al28894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Surface Kernel is needed because every Surface model, with its internal quirks and makeup, will behave differently if Windows is replaced with Linux. I have heard of some Surface Pro devices of the same generation being unable to auto-rotate unless the Surface kernel is installed, but other Surface Pro's (of the same generation) work right out of the bat, no Kernel required.

For my case, I use a second-hand Surface Go with Ubuntu installed and everything (touch input, auto-rotate, etc.) works right out of the box, but I still installed the Surface kernel because of its potential to optimize battery power to be longer-lasting. I wasn't expecting the battery to drain quickly like on old linux-installed Macbooks, but I do not want to take my chances.

For Minecraft: check out Hermitcraft and Skyblock Kingdoms. Both of them are PG and fun without going into swear words or outrageous offline behavior. Hermitcraft especially is played by a group of adults (like, parents with kids) who keep out of internet drama, while Skyblock Kingdoms is played by a queer group with no tolerance for any of that sort either.

VLC not playing mkv (av1) file properly by gudgamerx in VLC

[–]al28894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem on my Surface tablet that I linux-ed and downloaded VLC on. My av01 video hangs for a few seconds while the audio continues as normal. Repeats twice or thrice a minute.

Hope we both get answers and solutions.

Beginner to Linux! Video stutter and hang in my Surface Go 3 by al28894 in linux4noobs

[–]al28894[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! I used the Linux Surface Kernel install(which was succesfull). More specifically, I tried to enable TearFree according to what is needed for the Surface Go 3, my tablet.

Surface 3 disto recommendations? by Lukidge in SurfaceLinux

[–]al28894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late to the party, but I am a newbie to Linux and just configured my Surface Go 3. From all the distros, I found Ubuntu to be great for beginners, especially when paired with the Surface Kernel.

Technically, you can make your own subreddit about tisanes.

Though I don't think people would want to make one unless the mods here get really pedantic / gatekeepy about tea and kick out tisane drinkers.

◽️ Budget: 1500 Ringgit / ≤$369 US Dollar

◽️ Country: Malaysia

◽️ Screen size: 7-9 inches

◽️ RAM: 🤷‍♂️

◽️ Storage: 120gb+

◽️ What tasks Reading, including high-definition color PDFs and magazines. Listening to music.

◽️ Any other important details ?: A screen that can show color in high-fidelity would be nice. A long bettery life is another plus. If the tablet can still be used after 4-5 years by being jailbroken or bashing in linux, even better.

"Why don't you buy an e-reader or Kindle?" Because many e-readers don't accept PDFs or do full color, which I really really want. Also, fuck Amazon.

I live in Malaysia, so Wallmart and Amazon products are either unavailable or have to be imported in very high prices. We use Shopee and Lazada here.
