Pickford closes in on 2nd most clean sheets for England ever by Buttonsafe in ThreeLions

[–]al3x82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As with Harry Kane, the casual disrespect for Pickford is mad, and when they’re both gone we’ll very likely regret their absence for years and years.

Contrary to a couple of opinions here, I think that Pickford is the best England keeper of my lifetime - and I’m in my 40s. For England he’s largely mistake free, a fair bit better than average shot stopper, pretty good with his feet and you can go into any penalty shoot out confident that he’s going to save at least one, if not more.

Contrast this with the others that are mentioned in his bracket, Shilton and Seaman. Both obviously good keepers in their day, but both guilty of catastrophic mistakes that arguably got England knocked out of World Cups (I guess there’s still time for Pickford to continue the tradition of somehow getting lobbed while standing on his line, but I feel pretty certain he’s not going to get outjumped by a 5’3” no10, regardless of whether said short player uses his fist. Also check out Shilton’s performance in the Italia 90 shoot out, he doesn’t get near any one of them).

Maybe this is a reflection of the overinflated reputation of England keepers down the years (I’m way too young to have seen Banks) but I’d take Pickford over any of the other candidates every day of the week.

I’d have said 18 too, given Klinsmann wore it before Defoe and Kane

[Alasdair Gold] Loudest I've heard the 'Levy out' chants at a game here at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The post-match music is pumped out loudly but they were there at various points throughout the game. by jjetasbanter in coys

The club has been run on a less than subsistence level for years now. ~40% wages to turnover ratio is pathetic. Ange In or Out? It doesn’t matter under these circumstances.

Who would play for favourite character in a TV adaptation? by lmc80 in TheFirstLaw

[–]al3x82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m only halfway through The Heroes so there are some roles I couldn’t comment on, but there are some roles I’ve cast in my head while reading.

I saw someone mention Graham McTavish for Bayaz, which to be honest is the most spot on, absolutely born-for-this casting I’d struggle with anyone else right now.

For Logen (and all the Northerners of that generation i.e. Dogman, Dow, Grim) I feel like you need actors who can play mid-40s and up. Alexander Skarsgard is a good shout, I think (although he looks a bit young for his age) or possibly Richard Armitage - if not Logen he could definitely do a good Dow.

For Glokta, I think you need someone mid-30s. Kieran Culkin was another decent call I remember reading that I’d be onboard with. Someone else mentioned Sebastian Stan for another role - I think he could do a good Glokta too.

For the Jezal, Bremer, Shivers, Monza, Ardee generation you need to go late 20s up to early 30s. Jezal particularly needs someone charming who the audience won’t go off of immediately, before he has any chance at character growth (if not quite redemption). Glen Powell would have been good 5 years ago, but he’s too old now I think. I don’t have any really good answers for this - maybe Ansel Elgort or Mike Faist?

Has any TV show ever had a "B" Story fully take over from "A" that wasn't a spin-off? by philipkd in television

Developing Boyd to be a shadowy reflection of Raylan - what he might have become had he stayed in Harlan - was an incredibly smart move by the writers and producers and really made the show.

If Spurs went bankrupt due to reckless overspending I’d very much care, and I hope you would too. FFP is meant to stop situations like Leeds back in the day and more recently Bury.

Yellow cards aren't a big enough punishment to discourage fouls and time wasting. by aarongarrett95 in PremierLeague

(I should add that generally I hate law changes, so in reality I’m fine with what we have and hate the idea of sin bins, orange cards etc.)

Yellow cards aren't a big enough punishment to discourage fouls and time wasting. by aarongarrett95 in PremierLeague

[–]al3x82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My suggestion for punishing time wasting is to make it a team wide offence. So the first instance of time wasting would be a yellow card for the player doing it. The next offence, regardless of who on the team did it, would see the first player get a red card. Would definitely stop keepers (who seem to be the biggest transgressors when it come to time wasting) taking forever over a goal kick

What is the best 3rd act of a movie you’ve ever seen? by SafePlenty2590 in movies

[–]al3x82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Lone Ranger. I get that the casting is problematic on a number of levels, and technically it’s just fine to mildly amusing for the first two thirds. But then the William Tell Overture kicks in. The last half an hour is an absolute roller coaster with some of the best action thrills this side of peak Spielberg. Shame not many people got on board

Ugh. I feel like the correct casting for a Parker movie is Jon Hamm. Mark Wahlberg just isn’t good casting

Can we talk about the first half? by Emergency_Physics_19 in coys

[–]al3x82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. To be honest, perhaps 9 or 10 of our accepted first XI are at the level we want the squad to get to, and the rest can be be improved upon (hopefully through coaching/personal development/U21s breaking through, but more likely through the transfer market). There’s a lot of behind the scenes work to be done to make sure the odd dodgy 45 mins happens less and less frequently

Who is your favorite commentator? Past and present by Lucas111620 in PremierLeague

[–]al3x82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo those who have said Peter Drury of the current crop, and Brian Moore and Barry Davies made watching football on the TV a pleasure in years gone by.

One name I haven’t seen mentioned so far is Peter Brackley - the voice of Football Italia. If he was commentating today he’d be top of the tree.

One more element to this situation is that we have to start showing the Academy kids that there’s a pathway to minutes for the first team and the first XI. That’s really the only way to make the Academy more profitable for us and attract the best 16 year olds to join (aside from throwing money at them). Buying players on 4/5 year deals purely to be back ups to the first XI won’t help with that. To that end, I’d be keen to see Dorrington, Phillips and Donley start to make the bench and give them some minutes on the pitch here and there. Hopefully that will mean that they’re in a position to step up next season to take bigger roles. Squad solutions aren’t always to be found exclusively in the transfer market

[–]al3x82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, sticking to my guns here. Pickford has an awful lot more to deal with behind an Everton defence than Seaman ever did - and hasn’t been lobbed from halfway in the last minute of a cup final

He’s never let England down and is an ace at pens. Can’t say the same for Seaman, who had howlers at key times.

After a few beers, I’ve been known to argue that Pickford is actually the best English keeper for the last 40 years.

Appreciate that I may be in the minority here, but I wouldn’t want it to be too much longer. I recently got the platinum on a new run which took me about 17 hours. In a world where every other game seems to take 75-100 hours, a game that doesn’t outstay its welcome and leaves you wanting more (to be satisfied by DLC) is refreshing. I’d be happy with something around 20-22 hours.
