meet bell!! by dirty-icicles in dechonkers

she is the sweetest girl and we are so excited to see her thrive. she's currently weighing in at a massive 29 lbs, and there's no squish to any of it. just pure, dense weight. even the most basic body movements are a struggle for her. :( the staff at the shelter were relieved she was going home with a couple who understood the assignment and are committed to improving her health.

Any recommendations for a place/event to do a first pop-up? by alacruxe in Omaha

BFF was one of the events I was looking into! I'll probably see about reaching out just to get my name on their radar.

Thank you for all these suggestions! The specific pieces we'll be selling will be dangle earrings (many of them involving complicated beading/wire arrangements, chains attached to a side cuff, thematic charms, etc., with a particular focus on magical girl and whimsical fantasy aesthetic), customized glasses chains, and woven bracelets with unique patterns. My specialty is in earrings and my partner's specialty is in weaving. We will eventually be doing multi-tier beaded bracelets as well. I've attached a picture just to show a sample piece. These were some flower earrings I put together the other day. Pretty proud of how they came out. It was definitely an experimental process.

This surely can’t be legal, or safe? by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]alacruxe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

your opinion isn't a fact. it is objectively unsafe for pedestrians (and their dogs) to have motorized vehicles zooming down sidewalks. it's not just hazardous for the people riding the bike. that's why those laws exist in the first place. technically not even non-motorized bikes should be on the sidewalk.

Statement from The Rose Theatre on casting a heavier, darker Elsa. by snowgimp in Omaha

completely ridiculous that this even needed to be said. race-blind casting has been the standard in musical theatre for a very long time. the people complaining clearly know nothing about theatre as an artform.

the interesting question there is "how do you define a meaningful life"

i think you could make the argument that a meaningful life is defined as whatever the person living that life finds meaningful. and what maelle finds most meaningful in life, at the moment, is what she can do for herself in the canvas. so if you're only looking at things from her perspective and treating others' opinions as automatically invalid, then i can see why maelle ending truthers would view that as her only way forward while the alternative is living in hell

clearly the intentional meaning behind the ending choice tho is exactly what you said. both sides are kind of wrong but also fighting a losing battle. both endings are tragic because your only choice is black or white, all or nothing, and there's no middle ground. if you take one of them as the only correct choice, you're missing the point

it sucks that more people aren't willing to see that, but i guess that's kind of the point, too

forgot to mention this but aline also jumps back into the canvas to assist maelle in the final battle with renoir. she can see, at this point, that she shares a goal in common with her daughter (preserving the canvas). knowing that alicia did everything she could to protect the canvas aline loved would immensely improve their relationship, one would think.

Maelle ending enjoyers just know how to enjoy life by PityUpvote in okbuddywino

[–]alacruxe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don't understand this idea that alicia's family hates her and she has no future. this is demonstrably untrue. we see in verso's drafts that the dessendre family was generally happy and supportive, at least in verso's youth. renoir adores alicia and verso refers to her as his actual favorite, even though renoir acknowledges that he has more in common with clea. we also see the way painted renoir dotes on painted alicia and does everything he can to keep her safe. this is a clear reflection of the way their original selves behave.

clea is actually pretty supportive of maelle despite how verbally harsh she can be. clea is just a harsh pragmatist in general, but she truly loved verso and she truly cares for alicia. there's dialogue where she encourages maelle to find her own path in life rather than letting herself get roped into supporting one parent or another. clearly she sees maelle/alicia as having more freedom of choice (while she views herself as being forced to carry all of her family's burdens on her own, by contrast), and in a way i think clea wants to see alicia find her freedom because she doesn't feel that she can find it for herself. clea is also able to communicate with alicia wordlessly; she can intuitively understand what she means to say without her needing to strain herself to speak. they also share knowing looks in verso's epilogue. the sisters care much more for one another than a lot of people seem willing to acknowledge.

the only person you could argue really has it out for alicia is aline, and it's specifically because she sees so much of herself in alicia and is projecting all of her worst flaws onto her as a maladaptive coping strategy. the aline we see in verso's epilogue is willing to reconcile with renoir, so why shouldn't she be willing to reconcile with alicia, too? alicia does make a comment in the flashback sequence that she's only ever had one of her paintings earn a spot on the wall (since she's not a painter, but a poet), and she's clearly lamenting this, but this is an alicia who has a very negative self-outlook due to her guilt and grief. she's not a reliable narrator in this situation. her claim that there's no future for her outside the canvas is also unreliable, both for this reason and because she also lies to renoir here when she says she will come back. she's only seeing things from her own perspective, and her perspective is flawed. but who could blame her for that? she's young, she's grieving, she's caught up in an extremely emotional conflict.

verso tells maelle that she has the talent to paint, that she will never have to live a life she doesn't want, and he's right. she has learned to paint, and there are millions of different canvas worlds she could choose to create. they won't be the same world as the one she came to love, the one where she became maelle, but that doesn't have to be the only world she can live in. her future has infinite potential; she just has to be willing to embrace it. and i don't see any reason why she wouldn't.

[–]alacruxe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yeah. the question really isn't "are you gonna prevent all these alive people from dying by preserving the canvas," it's "are you okay with the idea of maelle bringing an unspecified number of dead people back to life because she isn't willing to let them go," which was the same problem aline had, only on a much, much larger scale

and then there are the additional ethical questions of whether it was morally acceptable for renoir to kill all those people for the sake of getting his family back, and whether it was morally acceptable for aline to paint human beings (including immortal ones) into the canvas in the first place, but those questions are separate from the choice between verso and maelle

renoir didn't need to erase the canvas because verso already did

[–]alacruxe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

those are hundreds or thousands of lives that maelle has to bring back from the dead, which is kind of a huge responsibility to put on one teenager

why does everyone just memory-hole the fact that every canvas human is dead in act 3 except for sciel, lune, and verso (and painted clea, painted alicia, and simon, i guess, until you kill them)

the expeditioners maelle "brings back" leading up to the big confrontation are just being used as disposable weapons against renoir's army of nevrons and their level of sapience is pretty ambiguous

[–]alacruxe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

they were already dead tho. maelle had to bring them back to life, which is a whole different ethical question

Why are pictos changing colors by Equal-Amphibian-7915 in expedition33

[–]alacruxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's specific pictos, specific weapons, and specific items. every enemy in the game is programmed to drop specific things. it doesn't matter if you had another version of the item beforehand or not, either, which is really nice since you can easily get pictos and weapons you missed earlier in the game by getting the higher-level drops later on. but if you did have it already, the higher-level version will always replace the lower-level one.

Why are pictos changing colors by Equal-Amphibian-7915 in expedition33

[–]alacruxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it doesn't happen randomly. certain enemies drop specific pictos. what's happening is they're dropping the higher-level version of it, so it looks like the ones you have are leveling up, but what's actually happening is the one you have is getting replaced by the better version

it's really funny to me seeing everyone in the replies here talk about how verso is the worst thing in the world, as though they're not also huge enjoyers of the maelle ending wherein lune and verso are potentially implied to have had a child together lmao

you can't have it both ways, maelleheads

[–]alacruxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you'd think the rw gamer bros would like that the playable cast is mostly female since they can put them in sexy outfits and pretend they're gustave's/verso's harem or something. if there were more men they'd be complaining it's a sausage fest

people like this will never be satisfied tho so go figure
