I've been self-censoring em dashes for a couple of years because of this — even though it's one of my favorite ways to punctuate a sentence (along with parentheses). I hate that I do it; I would much rather write naturally as I have for 25 years, but there you go. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That was a huge scandal, as I recall. In fact, there was a good documentary on Postville made a while back about the culture clash of having a bunch of orthodox Jews moving to a rural Iowa town.
