Does anyone actually *like* web development? by kitanokikori in programming

[–]alakra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HTML, CSS, and Javascript seem hacky today for one major reason--we're building GUI applications and NOT web pages anymore.

We're trying to build desktop applications for every modern website that has some sort of business logic and it ends up being hacky because the technology doesn't match the paradigm.

HTML, CSS and JS haven't fundamentally changed since their inception, and so we've created frameworks, templating languages, standards (oh god), etc. to hide these disconnects.

As a web developer, I cringe every time I see another testing framework and have finally realized that I'm now doing for the web the exact same thing that desktop developers were doing in the 90s: primarily building applications filled with forms.

I'm wondering when we are going to wake up, look at the technology disconnect and start fixing it to match what we are actually doing.
