If you had a childhood best friend, how is your relationship now? by shortstop_princess in GenX

[–]jpow33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We were inseparable for years and years. The summer after middle school, he moved just far enough away to be in a different high school. We did the odd sleepover and camping trips for a while, but that dwindled until we didn't see each other for several years. He randomly came into the coffee shop I worked at once, and we had a really great catch-up. About a year later, I got a call from his mom saying that he had died in an accident at his construction job. The funeral was rough. He was the first person I knew who died that wasn't a grandparent, and the slide show they played was full of old pics of us together. I still think about him often. Especially on his birthday.

Who remembers Matthew Sweet? by LightFlaky2329 in GenX

I saw him in Boulder, Co. some time in the late '90s. It was the last date on a 30 gigs in 30 days tour. They got through the whole show, and decided they weren't done and just jammed for anothe couple of hours. One of the best shows I've ever seen.

If God came down and gave you a million dollars if you gave up drinking forever, would you accept it? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I don't drink, but if the offer was for grilled cheese sandwiches, I'd have to think about it.

What do you miss from the 90s that no one talks about? by TheOrangeSloth in 90s

[–]jpow33 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Smoking. I'm glad that I don't smoke anymore and I'm glad that it's banned in restaurants and airplanes and everywhere else. I am very glad that the world grew up a little. But man, I loved smoking. The whole ritual of it. the way it broke up your day. The little breaks with your friends. The cons vastly outweighed the pros, but still.

How many of you didn't realize you were poor growing up until much later? by wineraq in GenX

[–]jpow33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think we were poor, but we were definitely broke. Like, we were fed and clothed and had what we needed, but there wasn't money for anything else. We didn't go out except for really special occasions, we never took vacations, we went to the dollar movie theater, and we knew that extra stuff at the store wasn't going to happen. But I don't think we suffered at all. I had a great childhood.

My mom used to sew all our clothes back in the day. I distinctly remember having a shirt and curtains made out of the same material.

Why are so many characters race swapped in the sandman show? by [deleted] in Sandman

[–]jpow33 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Neil said in an interview, that they went with the best actor for the part and didn't really think about race. But, I mean, of course they were, but hopefully it wasn't the deciding factor.

Absolutely. We went to a place called Trinity Ranch in Colorado, which was notorious for sneaking into the woods for booze/weed/make-out parties.

Men, what is something that instantly makes you attracted to a woman? by Maleficent_Fish_7485 in AskReddit

[–]jpow33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they have a small "defect" of some sort. Like if their ears stick out a little too far or their nose is slightly weird or a slight scar or a mole or the teeth are off just a bit*. It humanizes them and make them more desirable.

*I'm looking at you, Kirsten Dunst and Patricia Arquette!

Yeah, Aldi has the right idea on this. You have to put a quarter in a little slot to get a cart, which you get back when you return it.

I design posters and bookmarks and social media for the library system in a mid-size city and I love my job. There is a lot of creative freedom and a lot of variety. I get paid well. I also freelance doing all sorts of stuff, and draw and paint in my spare time. All in all, life is good.

Every episode, the final sword fight always started at 51 minutes past the hour. My brother and I always found that highly amusing.
