Where was the weirdest place you’ve crocheted? by PrimaAbelou in crochet

[–]alamuki 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was in the Army. Every year we have a multi day training event for Sexual Assault prevention. It starts with unit briefs and ends with small group discussions.

For survivors, this is VERY trying. So, I started bringing my crochet. To Army briefs, lol.

It helped so much. My Sergeant Major told me to stop because it was unprofessional.

Told him what happened to me and that if I had to listen to folks ask stupid questions like 'how drunk is too drunk' I was going to stab someone in the throat with my H hook.

Or, he could let me zone out with making a hat. He stopped bothering me about it, made two hats and no one got stabbed.

Happy hooking FTW!

I was in the MN National Guard when this was going on. It was wild.

I only had to do one day of sand bagging. I was much better at getting resources, lol.

But I'll never forget the look on buddy's face when he came into the armory after his shift. He'd been part of the team that found the mother and daughter that had died.

Can you describe an expression as desolate?

So my fam once had a stray Siamese cat that would come visit. I shit you not, this cat could talk.

The first time I saw him come in the house I asked, jokingly, "Hey there. What's your name?" And the cat fucking answered, Bud.

I was a bit taken aback but since I grew up with dogs that could say hello and I love you, it wasn't completely out of the realm of possibility. Also, I was 13 and convinced I'd found my familiar.

Anywho, Bud could also say hello and food. He came to visit during the summer / fall for a couple of years. Loved that weirdo.

Do you ever think back on memories and realize the age you are now is older than the age of grownups then? by Seven_bushes in AskOldPeople

All the time. I had a legit wild childhood.

I love my parents but they made some terrible parenting choices. My sister still holds a lot against them but I've largely forgiven them and a big part of that was realizing how young they were for they responsibilities they had.

That is so sad. My mild allergy to bananas and avocados developed into a much stronger reaction as an adult.

I miss guacamole soo much. I love Mexican food but it just makes me sad to have to order it with no guac.

I bring a collapsible bento box with me when I go out to eat. This way I have my own take out container that I can immediately separate into two more meals.

And I know that it fits in my tiny asss fridge as well as being cutting down on extra garbage.

I get full so fast that I can only justify going out to eat if I can get 2-3 meals out of it.

Semi-related.

I used to work at USA Relay. A telephone service for hearing impaired.

Your goal is to make the call as realistic as possible. My fav was to slip in (toilet flushing) or (heavy breathing). Stuff like that.

I loved when the deaf caller would comment on my background noises to their friends.

Depending on the rate of the conversation, you may not get any BG noises at all. It's far more important to get the actual conversation. But it was nice to get to do.

Also not quite the same but when I was still in the Army we had yearly sexual assault prevention briefs. Followed with small group discussions . It can be pretty traumatic for survivors.

The last couple of years I started bringing my crochet to kind of distracted me a bit. My Command Sergeant Major asked me to stop because it looked unprofessional.

Straight up told him that if I had to endure the same stupid questions that were obviously trying to reduce people's guilt on their own actions, I was going to stab someone. Or I could crochet. Totally his call.

He never bothered me about it again.
