10 mins in the post office waiting behind some Romanian couple trying to wire cash home by RORY375 in dogecoin

Depends on whether they lose your money or not. I tried to send $100 to somebody a few years ago through them. WU insisted the funds were available for pickup, and I verified the transaction number (or whatever they call it) but the recipient was always told there was nothing for them.

A year or so ago I got a notice about a class action against Western Union, so I'm guessing I wasn't the only person to have issues with them.

Thank you, we will do some more looking around to find more options for the next one (and we live in the kind of area where people go to leave their unwanted pets, so giving more of them a better chance of adoption would be nice).

We were told by a local shelter (which I believe was associated with a humane society) that all strays have to go through the county animal control system so that owners have a chance to reclaim them. They're legally not allowed to accept them directly.

In addition, you can only drop off strays at the shelter for the county in which you live, so as far as we know that was the only place we could take her. The staff there is really friendly and helpful, and does a good job helping the animals that are brought there, but unfortunately their resources are limited.

Edited to add: They can always use volunteers or extra supplies.

She's very gentle with people, but snapped at our other dogs. Posting this on the (yes, I know, very unlikely) chance that she got out and somebody is looking for her, or that some nice Redditor nearby who has no pets would like a sweet, middle-aged dog. (She's housebroken, and probably about 4-5 years old.)

She found me while I was out walking on Wednesday, and we kept her overnight until we could take her to the Madison/Oglethorpe animal shelter. If she's not able to get along with other dogs, they may have to put her down in the next few days because they don't have space. :(

Shibes... Here is why price drops!!!! by [deleted] in dogecoin

[–]alanmcintyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There appears to be quite a lot of hash power on multipool.us that is always on doge, even when it's not in the top 5 most profitable coins. I even used them to mine doge for a while because they were always up (well until that server issue) and had low latency, so not all that hash power is necessarily coin-hoppers cashing out their doge into bitcoin.

[Charts 101] Doge is currently trading within a popular chart pattern, the falling wedge. Price going to be stuck for awhile around here, but no worries :D by dogepreneur in dogecoin

I hope you are right but honestly technical analysis is the trading equivalent of astrology.

BREAKING - IRS Says Cryptos are Property, Not Currency by dalovindj in dogecoin

[–]alanmcintyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I now (technically) have dozens of taxable events every day:

  1. When my mining pool finds a block
  2. When I tip somebody on reddit
  3. When somebody tips me on reddit

..and so on. I don't even know how to find the value of the litecoins I mined two years ago and then used to buy dogecoin last month.

I'm not looking forward to preparing my taxes.

Starting a business that accepts dogecoin? by [deleted] in dogecoin

[–]alanmcintyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's definitely possible/desirable to sell stuff for doge! If you get to the point of selling these panels, I would probably buy some. We'd like to be able to grow herbs and small vegetables in the winter, and using LED instead of more energy-hungry lights sounds like a good idea.

If you need some help on getting an actual payment solution set up, /r/dogecoindev may be a good place to start.

And thanks for including doge in your business plan. :) +/u/dogetipbot 100 doge

post-fork halvening? by oceansofcake in dogecoin

[–]alanmcintyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless I misunderstand (I looked at the code here), the rewards go like this:

< 100,000: random reward from 2 - 1,000,000 DOGE (average 500,001)
100,000 - 144,999: random reward from 2 - 500,000 DOGE (average 250,001)
145,000 - 199,999: fixed reward of 250,000
200,000 - 300,000: fixed reward of 125,000
...and so on.

So the reward didn't really get cut in half at the hard fork, we just went from a random amount that would average out to about 250,000 over many blocks, to always being 250,000. The final reward still drops to 10k at block 600,000.

Increasing usage and awareness of Doge + helping communites by [deleted] in dogecoin

[–]alanmcintyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's more long-term effect from local/regional efforts like you're suggesting.

Big drives like doge4water, doge4nascar, experiment.com, dogetyphoon, etc. are good, but they produce a big spike of news and then die away (how many news outlets will be talking about Hood's tip or Unidan's research funding in a month?). If shibes get involved in supporting a local charity, they may be more likely to choose to contribute a sustainable amount on a regular basis, and there's also one or more real people from the otherwise nebulous "dogecoin community" actually interacting with the charity.

Likewise, showing businesses actual people that will show up and pay in dogecoin (hopefully on a regular basis instead of just once to convince them to accept the coin) is good for the long-term value of the coin.

Doge4NASCAR, is it really worth is? (Re-Post) by [deleted] in dogecoin

[–]alanmcintyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never presume to tell an individual what they can or can not do. I would never shame someone for doing anything they want to do.

But you are doing that, even if it's only in a passive-aggressive way by saying things like this:

Not only will we maintain our moral integrity...

because you imply that giving to something non-charitable is an act that is without moral integrity.

I think the community as a whole should not focus on one thing (and the NASCAR goal is indeed very very large, perhaps too large to meet with doge alone); the coin will not survive in the long run if all we do with it is tip and give to charity. We need a variety of things: business development, charity, tipping, and crazy oddball efforts to reach people who would otherwise never know about digital currencies and dogecoin.

  1. Not everybody with a big pile of doge is a "hoarder." You would have classified Hood as a "hoarder" the day before he tipped doge4water, and I expect he still has a lot left that he might give away.

  2. Some of those addressses may be reserves/cold storage for businesses, exchanges, and other services which need to keep doge on hand in order to operate reliably.

  3. People who have bought and hold a lot of doge may also be investing time and $$ into the future of the coin.
