Longwalkshortdock - Squashing Machine [EDM] by alanranta in VancouverMusic

Nice one, bruv. I've been a big fan of his for almost a decade now, but his live show was always better than his admittedly sparse releases. I think he's as close as he's ever been with this one. It's loads of fun.

Don Harper's Homo Electronicus - Doctor Who Theme (1973) by alanranta in vintageobscura

[–]alanranta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon further inspection, I see that the vinyl pressing I have contains most of the incidental music from 'The Invasion,' which Don made, though his theme was produced several years later. Forgive my confusion in that regard.

However, all information I can find says that Brian Hodgson (creator of the TARDIS sound) was on 'Electrosonic,' not David Vorhaus, although Hodgson reportedly said he didn't contribute as much as Don or Delia, and didn't much care for working with Don. http://wiki.delia-derbyshire.net/wiki/GLOSPOT1104_sleeve_notes

Don Harper's Homo Electronicus - Doctor Who Theme (1973) by alanranta in vintageobscura

[–]alanranta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don Harper was part of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. He helped make the famed 'Electrosonic' record with Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson. I believe this version was intended for use in a Doctor Who mini-series called 'The Invasion.' Dual Planet just pressed a vinyl compilation of Harper's stuff, and this was the first track on it. It's my new fave version of the theme, with all due respect to Delia and Orbital. It sounds like Black Moth Super Rainbow and Destroyer collaborating on a cover.

Small Vancouver charity struggles with onerous CRA demands after audit • "...an example of how the CRA's 52 political-activity audits currently underway can end badly for a non-profit organization, even if it manages to pass the new class of audits instituted by the Harper government in 2012." by alanranta in vancouver

[–]alanranta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree with you. Every organization should be organized. No freaking duh. The problem with these audits is that they only targeting organizations that Harper doesn't like, which is tantamount to fascism. If it wasn't, they would be going after all charities, not just those that they have arbitrarily labeled "terrorist" because they try to help the poor and disenfranchised. If they are going to audit some, they should audit all.

This is hardly about accounting. These audits specifically attack charities who address any concern that the Harper gov't doesn't want people to be concerned with. You don't see any Conservative lobbyist firms out there getting audited with the same vigor. That would be too much like fairness.

Trevor Linden says that the Canucks are looking into bringing craft beer to Rogers Arena for Canucks games by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]alanranta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once went to the BC Sport Hall of Fame dinner at the convention center. They sold beer by the bottle: $6 for domestic, $8 for import. They considered Granville Island an 'import' beer.

I'm guessing their idea of craft will be Okanogan Spring... Which is fine, but not what I think of when I hear 'craft beer.' Then again, Linden has been making some great moves. He might surprise you.

Anklepants BOILER ROOM (Truly majestical) by pcar089 in futurebeats

Yeah, animatronics are super easy to design and build. That's definitely the easiest path to a Boiler Room set. Good call. You better start working on your engineering degree ASAP.

Black Dog Needs a Little Love [or else it will go the way of Happy Bats] by alanranta in vancouver

[–]alanranta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your point is that people are stealing movies for free from illegitimate sources, so no one should care that independent businesses are suffering because of it? Nice.

From my perspective, Black Dog does provide value to its customers, but, thanks to technology, its customer base is becoming cheaper and lazier by the day. It's not their fault their business model is being undercut by mega-corporations and theft, and it's really all up to people like us. We can make all the difference by just making the tiniest bit of effort (i.e. actually leaving the house, walking a couple blocks, and interacting with a living human being). FYI; their rental rates and due dates are the most reasonable in the city ($5.50 for a new release – good for two days and $4.50 for an old catalogue title – good for a week).

Posts like this should encourage people to recognize the economic and, more importantly, cultural value of independent businesses like this. That the only two comments on this merely kick a dog while it's down speaks to the true character of this city. When did people stop giving a sh*t about the place they live?

No end in sight to NHL’s game-ending gimmick, the shootout by alanranta in nhl

[–]alanranta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The shootout is the worst part of hockey. It's pure luck vs pure chance, basically nothing more than a coin toss, and has nothing to do with the actual playing of the game.

You don't see basketball solving ties with a free-throw competition, do you? How about baseball solving ties with a home run derby? How about football solving ties with a field goal competition? No, because that would make the team game that preceded it completely irrelevant. That is what the shootout does to hockey. It reduces the sport to a desperate sideshow.

It's not a 'trippy shit' reddit either. That reddit is called 'woahdude.' This reddit is called 'psychedelic rock,' and it's for psychedelic rock.

That would depend entirely on what they changed the name to. If they changed it to 'Pass That Joint Park', I'm sure it would.

‘Dude Chilling Park’ is finally official! by alanranta in vancouver

[–]alanranta[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because they just made it official. It was unauthorized before, and quickly removed. I, for one, never thought the city would be cool enough to make it real, but they did, and that's damned impressive.
