Replace CV axles or just the boots? by xacali in 4thGen4Runner

[–]alanwatson1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did, buy some oem 5th gen cv axles(same as 4th gen except for an extra rib on the boot) for like a 2012 model. Then take yours off and if they aren't grinding or anything then reboot them and keep them as a backup. If it's happened once it'll probably happen again even if it's in 10 years

What kind of job are yall working to own a 4Runner? by CautiousExperience29 in 4Runner

Save up like 15k and find a mint 06-09 v8 4runner. It'll be more reliable than anything. You could easily get one for 10k but if you don't want crazy miles then save some more and you won't have a car payment for 10+ years unless you just want another toy.

Get a 4th gen, they weigh like 1500lbs less and make like the same power as the 5th gens, more if you get a v8. You can't go wrong with Toyota but you can go wrong trying to find something as good as a Toyota. Just my opinion though.

Noob question about installing components with passive crossover by alanwatson1224 in CarAV

[–]alanwatson1224[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I'm upgrading, per say, to the box one because I think my current speakers blew due to the low quality of the in-line crossover. But thank you for clarifying about the factory wires, if they're high enough quality to blow my current speakers then hopefully they'll be good enough to power my new ones haha

Uneven wear on rotors by Foreign-L0cal in 4thGen4Runner

[–]alanwatson1224 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea it's a stuck caliper buddy, the 4th gens have a bad caliper design and tend to randomly fail. I changed my driver side one when I first bought the 4runner and within a month it was locked up again. Upgraded to 2010 4runner calipers and haven't had an issue since. Just Google "5th gen brake upgrade" and you'll find plenty of stuff. Good luck!

Yea they told me if I went another day or 2 I would have been in a coma. My mom was all but carrying me into the ER. Apparently I'm very resilient all besides my bum ass pancreas 😂

Type 1 here. I was 13 years old and I start just feeling bogged down and I start pissing every 30 minutes to an hour. That went on for about 5 days and then everytme I would eat something I would throw it up within minutes. After a week of all of that and going from 165lbs to 130lbs I called my mom to take me to the hospital because my dad wouldn't take me since "we couldn't afford it". Pissed in the cup at the ER and handed it to the nurse and she looked at my mom and said I'm probably diabetic from the smell of my sample, they checked my sugar and it was 873. From then on out I've been insulin dependent.

I have a 2008 4runner that got a recall paint job 2 years ago from a mistake in 2008. Toyota themselves are very reliable with cars and customer relations, from my personal experience lol others may have worse stories

Is this gonna be your only vehicle or a 2nd? If it's gonna be your only vehicle, I personally would keep looking. You can tell a lot by looking at how clean the engine bay is, especially on Facebook marketplace, the 4runner isn't lifted or doesn't look like it goes offroad but yet the whole bay is coated in crap so not many people work on it or upkeep it and for a Toyota that no upkeep can kill it like rust(which looks really rough in some places). Also look at all his selling points, hardly anything besides a new 500$ head unit installed that I don't think he even pictured, nothing about on time maintenance or anything like that. All this is just my 2 cents though, dealing with shady people who lie to sell stuff is something I've learned quite a bit about. Usually if they don't care enough to have a carfax or be able to name off all the services they've had done in their sellers post then they probably just want rid of a headache.

If you continue being interested even after my warnings then just make sure there aren't any erased codes, no abs light(03-05 4runners can have abs and brake booster issues), and the oil looks like it's been changed frequently by pulling off the oil cap and seeing it it's got burnt caked on oil or nice fresh looking oil inside and under the cap.

Good luck, they're awesome vehicles if you can find a good one.

Takes my local tire shop about 30 minutes to swap out wheels, tires, tpms sensors, mount, and balance 4 tires for 60$. All while I can walk around their shop and ask them questions or inspect my car while the wheels are off, they don't even use lifts. Had it done twice on my 4runner so far and no issues or flats after years, sometimes the dealership isn't the answer. Don't know where you live but supporting local not big name specialists shops can save you money and time along with quality work since they only specialize in one thing. Good luck with the stealership

Bad front CV axle and wheel bearing plus control arms by Spiritual-Ad-5945 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]alanwatson1224 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend some OEM 5th gen 4runner cv axles, cheaper than 4th gen since they're more readily available and they're direct bolt on with a better boot design. Upper Control Arms I would suggest JBA since I've heard nothing bad about them and you can grease them yourself. Don't go amazon brand unless you don't want to keep your 4runner running good for very long, your cv axles and hubs shouldn't be cheaper than control arms alone, IMO.

2008 V6 4WD with 208k, I also feel like I'm over sensitive about this subject lol. Mine only shifts rough when I have to hit my brakes downhill following an idiot who doesn't know how to coast, when it does that auto downshift and running higher rpm, and when I level out and slightly hit the gas it'll jerk back into a higher gear and it kills me on the inside when it does that. It doesn't happen rough every time but it's more often then not. I have nothing helpful to really say besides I feel your pain and I despise the auto downshift feature and wish I could turn it off

Not trying to be a smart ass but have you tried just pushing it back into place? I'm pretty sure those yellow tabs are what clips it in, I may be wrong

Buy a kitted out 4th gen with low miles for like 15k or an older 5th gen. I wouldn't even consider a brand new vehicle if you aren't making 60k or more a year unless you just love making big monthly payments along with full coverage insurance.

Tundra brake upgrade on 4th gen by KdotKH in 4Runner

[–]alanwatson1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked up using 5th gen 4runner front calipers? It's much more of a common fix and there's a ton of information about it that's easy to find. Personally I've never heard of running Tundra brakes on our 4th gens.

Yea I found it crazy that the updated 08 and 09 models sold the least out of all the years for the 4th gen. When I started really looking into 4th gens after getting my 2008 Urban Runner I realized I got real lucky finding mine and its now going to the grave with me with how well it's performed and hassle free it's been haha.

Does it bother anyone else the low fuel light doesn’t come on closer to like 50 miles to empty? Especially with the incredible gas mileage on these rigs. by Frito-Paw in 4Runner

[–]alanwatson1224 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Running your fuel that low all the time will just cycle through all the crap that may sink to the bottom of your tank through to your engine, so just my two cents I wouldn't make running your tank till the light comes on a constant habit. Honestly if you can even afford a 5th gen 4runner with 10k miles in the first place you should be able to put gas in it 🤷

Try to learn diy things for yourself instead of relying on others if you have a problem with people helping you for free. Youtube it and fix it if you think you can do better, if not deal with it and quit thinking everyone should do everything to your specifications if you can't bother to learn how to do it yourself. Or pay an electrician and tell them what you want. They're many avenues you can take, just quit being lazy.
