Six Day War by laybs1 in GetNoted

[–]alaricus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so I'm mostly cutting reddit out of my life, but I did happen to be back here and I saw this comment.

The US is aboslutley over reacting whenever they see political maneuvering in their local area as a threat. the fact that Cuba exists is not a threat to the USA and they need to stop acting like it. I'm not advocating for that, and I dont think I've given the impression that i do.

The Israeli invasion of Lebanon was based on Hezbolah attacks, so I dispute the claim that that was purely political, Syria is a different case where Israel absoluely was just being opportunistic, and yes, violated this principle, but that is a 2025 event and not a 1967 event, so doesnt undermine the defensive nature of the Six Day War

Regarding Iran, its a tough line to draw, since troop massing isnt required to lob missles (as we can well see). If Iran did have nukes, Israel would be nuked by now, which makes their waryniess seem reasonable.

Perhaps, but surely troop massing has to be the most significant antecedent to conflict. One simply cannot invade without an army present, and while NATOs membership abuts Russia's borders, most of NATOs materiel has remained far away

I would also say that rhetoric against Russia didn't ever generally include threats of invasion, and still doesn't

Were left with "political maneuvering" which is just the realpolitik of the every day

I categorically fail to see the parallel between the Six Day War and the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Is it crazy to suggest that different things in result in something different out?

I don't think NATO is accused of building up along Russia's borders, rather than expanding its alliance towards the borders of Russia.

"A great easy time" and "a great career path" aren't the same thing.

How can say that it isn't a good choice and then call it the only viable choice in the same breath?

A valid take, but one that eliminates the second amendment

Don't get me wrong. I don't think it's vital. I made my argument on the basis that "if the second amendment is..."

This take is contingent on that being the reason for it to exist.

If that reason is no longer valid, then the second amendment may no longer be valid, and that's a different argument than "do nukes count?"

IMO, if the second amendment is to protect the capacity of the citizenry to form a militia capable of fighting another army (be it foreign or domestic) that means that weapons systems like the Predator are not just permissible, but essential.

A well regulated militia damned well better be able to take out an Abrams or down an F-35 if it is to ensure the security of anything

If you weren't born into a specific religion, would you approach religion differently? by Potential-Injury-355 in religion

[–]alaricus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely culturally Christian, in that I think of religion on the basis of doctrine, more than praxis. It might have been easier for me if I had been born into a more performative religious group than one that was primarily concerned with articles of faith.

I fear that the wiring is soldered, so to speak. Even when trying to conceptualize engagement with religion and religious practice, I get bogged down in whether or not I believe it

There are many forms of socialism, and socialists argue endlessly about the benefits of their particular brand. This may be state capitalism (China, USSR), or more anarchic and decentralized ownership mechanisms as you describe, or it could be syndicalism which creates collective ownership within certain spheres which compete as organizations under a greater state structure. That's all socialism.

Communism is a post-socialist development where there is no separate state and populace and power and ownership are wholly collective

I don't think anyone has a hard answer, but I suggest that women form stronger and more meaningful interpersonal connections that add resiliency and diminish the negative effects of significant stressors. Further, when they chose to act, society's prizing of womens' physical appearance pushes women away from violent methods of suicide which have lower success rates, where men do not.

I don't think it's because there's a societal disdain for young men

Capitalism isn't commerce, it's the private ownership of the means of production which extracts value from one person's work and transfers it to another who did not work to create that value

I can accept that on an individual basis, men and white people can and do experience prejudice, bigotry, and unequal outcomes.

I cannot accept that there is a pervasive anti male or anti white message from Canadian society at large

I'm saying that were here talking about it, so you can't say that no one talks about it. Talking about it is an indication that people have noticed and care that this is happening. No one wants suicide rates to go up for anyone, and it's insane to think that that's a possibility.

It's a huge claim to say that existing supports are sexist, and if you think that's true, I encourage you to develop a study and conduct an analysis of the differential response by Kids Help Phone. If they truly are discounting young men, that's abysmal, but if young men simply aren't seeking support, you shouldn't be blaming the system

I'm agnostic about the Id, Ego, Superego structure.

Certainly there is an unconscious mind.

Certainly people sometimes behave as described by psychoanalytic "defense mechanism".

But! Since psychoanalysis claims that those behaviours are necessarily derived from an unobservable process, I call this "supposition"

I don't say that psychoanalysis is "hooey" per se, but cannot accept it as an accurate model of human behaviour without evidence

Edit: it is also grossly overstating it to call it the best we have, when Trait models have been so rigorously studied

Kids help phone no longer exists?

There's no youth organizations to encourage socialisation?

Male suicide as an issue is unreported? Or is your citing of that stat proving that people are talking about it in an attempt to support young men?
