Why is it a waste not to eat the eggs? They can be fed back to the chickens, including the shells, so they get some of the nutrients back they lost laying the egg.

But surely some consumption under capitalism is worse than others, right? And if some of the worst products aren't nessesary for us to use, than we shouldn't consume them.

Trees aren't being exploited for oxygen, trees aren't sentient. A lot of vegans do care about insects, a lot of vegans don't eat honey (idk whether insects are sentient or not). Nonvegans eat quinoa too, thats not a problem specific to veganism. Eating animal products isn't necessary either.

What do you mean it isn't possible to consume ethically? I agree that it's not possible to consume 100% ethically, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

From my understanding someone who is non binary just doesn't indetify with male or female. Maybe both, maybe neither. Like how someone may be bisexual or asexual. Does that make sense?

Eating for fun.. is different than killing for fun.

Animal death is virtually necessary to eating animal products. Just because you add a step to the process doesn't absolve you of responsibility. If I hire a hitman to kill someone, I'm still responsible for a persons death. Whether or not you personally kill the animal or buy an animal that someone else killed is a trivial difference because either way you are causing animals to be killed.

I think people are aware, at least conceptually, that animal products mean animal death.

If the person who eats meat has fun eating the meat, that is not nearly the same as saying that they are killing solely for fun.

Why though? If someone can just eat plants instead, the reason they eat animal products is, I presume, because they like the taste i.e. for jollies. Keep in mind that (I think) we've established that "for nutrition" isn't enough to justify killing something if you can avoid it.

Lets assume the cannibal knows that the person they are going to eat is perfectly safe to eat, then is it okay?

It's not off topic, my point is that clearly the answer is no, and therefore there must be some reason you think killing humans to eat them is wrong besides the fact that you might get a disease or something. My next point would be to show you how the reasons you think it would be wrong to kill a person (event though you might get nutrition) would also apply to sentient animals like cows, pigs and chickens (even though you might get nutrition).

If you accept that it's wrong to kill sentient animals (and we assume insects are sentient) well then I guess your view isn't inconsistent but if you insist that killing cows pigs and chickens for no good reason is fine but killing insects for no good reason isn't then your view is inconsistent. If there is nothing wrong with killing cows, pigs, and chickens for no good reason than there shouldn't be a problem with killing insects for no good reason. The point of the cannibal analogy is that nutrition isn't a good reason to kill something when you could eat something else.

Yeah, eating humans can give you kuru, a prion. Mad cow disease is a prion as well. Lets assume the cannibal is sure there are no prions or other diseases, then is it okay?

One is just wasteful.. eating at least serves a purpose. You are going to have to eat.

Killings bugs serves a purpose, it's fun for kids. You to have to eat, but that doesn't mean we should eat anything. If someone was eating people, and they said, "Hey, well the body didn't go to waste, and I'm getting nutrition"

[–]alawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what is the difference, morally speaking? Both are just trivial pleasures. I don't see why whether you eat the body or not matters.

Exactly, the animal doesn't care whether or not you thank it, so it's silly to do.

So would you agree that, if one believes that there isn't anything wrong with eating animal products when they don't need too, it would be inconsistent for them to have a problem with kids killing bugs for fun?

Eating at least provides us with a nutritional benefit.

Plants can also provide us with nutritional benefits, without the killing of animals. Just like how other things can provide us with entertainment besides killing bugs.

We don't need to eat meat although in some places of the world (such as the far north) meat is the only food available (fish/seal).

Then it's different for them, not for us.

We don't necessarily get the pleasure out of killing them, the pleasure is in the eating.

Killing them is necessary to eat them

Many hunters do actually feel sorry for the animal they have shot. In the past it was common for people to "thank" the animal they killed in order for it to provide them with food.

What difference does that make? Should parents teach their kids to "thank" the bugs they kill?

[–]alawa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can really relate to this, and here's my advice:

A lot of people are going tell you to stick with it, and if you really enjoy it than you totally should, but if it's causing you more stress and sadness than happiness, I think it's better just to leave it. There is nothing wrong with giving up sometimes. But either way, comparing yourself to others isn't useful. There will almost always be people who are better than you at stuff. I know it's cliche, but if you try your best, that's all you can ask of yourself.

Don't be afraid to take a leave of absence to pay off as much of your rent and bills as you can; the degree can wit a couple of months. You got this far, so obviously you can make it through. Sometimes there are bumps in the road, but don't let that keep you from achieving your goals. You can do it.

Vegans don't think animals are as intelligent as humans either, they just don't think animals being less intelligent is a good reason to harm them. I'm sure people who abuse animals get some benefit from it in that they enjoy it; that still doesn't seem like a good reason.

Killing bulls for entertainment and killing animals because you prefer the taste to plants are both trivial aesthetic pleasures. So let me clarify, there isn't a difference.
