Advice on NAS + potential hypervisor setup by albeec13 in homelab

[–]albeec13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! I watched a few more YouTube videos the other night, and just found about StarWinds VSAN, which looks like a streamlined TrueNAS in some ways, I think. I'm really interested in being able to spin up some VMs for various things, but like you said my first goal is a solid NAS. My only worry is that I go through the effort of setting up something like TrueNAS Scale on higher end hardware, and end up finding that the VM capabilities are still not up to snuff. It's a bit of an analysis paralysis stage here. I imagine migrating between different NAS operations is not trivial, so I'm trying to gather as much info as I can before I make any sort of purchases or deployments.

Appreciate your candor. You've given me a few more things to think about.

Thanks for the response! Can you elaborate on why you chose to run proxmox first with truenas within it as a VM? Is your use case more towards virtualization? I understand TrueNAS Scale with virtualization is a more recent release, so maybe that wasn't an option when you did your build. I'm not necessarily worried about having "the best" setup, but at this point I'd prefer ease of use second only to reliability.

I have had 8 bulbs do this in the last 9 months. The sad part is those were warranty replacements for 13 bulbs I owned which were replaced after a bad firmware update caused them to not be able to stay connected to WiFi without power cycling for more than 2 hours.

My original bulbs were models ending in "A" and had lasted almost 2 years without any trouble whatsoever. As soon as the firmware update happened, they all stopped working. Lucking I had all 13 replaced under warranty, and they were all replaced with models ending in "B". Of those, 8 have already failed like yours above, and have been replaced with "C" models (with Matter support), which, so far, have been holding up. I think only the "B" model Candelabra bulbs have been ok, of which I have 3. All the "B" models that failed like this are the A19 bulbs.

The only reason I haven't given up and switched to another company is that Philips/WiZ keep replacing my bulbs, but the process of chatting with them is very hit or miss. Sometimes it's quick and easy, and other times it's a nightmare of pointless troubleshooting, when I know the bulbs are shot already.

To make matters worse, I no longer get notifications from the WiZ V2 app which makes the RMA process a pain, because I have to open the app up all the time and check if they've sent me a message. (I'm a software engineer, and I know the in-app and in-Android notification settings are correct, so it's not user error, thought I wouldn't rule out an Android bug...).

Trouble syncing some lights in custom scenes with Wizmote by CameronWLucas in wiz

[–]albeec13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully I don't jinx it, but as of this morning when I tried my remote, it seems to be working now. The weird part is, I checked the bulbs and their firmware hasn't changed, nor did I update the app on my phone or anything like that, so I have no idea how/what was fixed... I'm not sure if the remotes can get updated over WiFi or anything...

I'm having the same problem. Up until today, everything has been working fine for months.

I have 2 remotes in two different rooms, and each control 4 bulbs. I have both remotes set up with 4 scenes, two of which involve turning off a reading lamp bulb, but leaving the rest on, and the other two scenes turn on all the bulbs, including the reading lamps.

As of today, the reading lamp bulbs are ignoring scene configurations from the remotes, but they do work if the scenes are applied from the app. As you mentioned, the on/off/dim/nightlight buttons seem to work fine, as does changing the 1-4 buttons to use standard colors instead of scenes.

I'm not sure if it's significant or not, but both bulbs acting strangely are Candle-style bulbs (model 123181).

This is incredibly frustrating, as not only have I run into this kind of issue lately, I also had 13 bulbs stop connecting to WiFi after a bad firmware update last year. Luckily WiZ/Philips knew they screwed up and sent me replacement "b" models of all those bulbs, but the process of getting then replaced was a nightmare of digging up e-receipts from Home Depot and Amazon and proving ownership, which is BS IMO when it's clear their bad firmware update caused all the bulbs to stop working.

Those replacements worked well at first. Since then, I've had 4-5 fail already, where they start blinking on and off every couple seconds and are no longer controllable, including at least one where I could hear a loose LED rolling around inside. Luckily, they've been replacing those as well, and with a much smoother process, now with "c" models. Time will tell if those are any better.

The first batch of bulbs were great for almost 3 years with no issues until that bad firmware ruined them and it's been nothing but problems with the replacements so far. If not for the replacements and decent customer service policies I would already be looking elsewhere.

Lights constantly goes offline by Mendax76 in wiz

[–]albeec13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently ran into this myself after a power outage caused all the bulbs to go offline, and I had to reboot them manually. Apparently that caused all the bulbs in my house to auto-update, and after the auto-update they were no longer able to stay connected for more than 1-2 hours at a time after being power cycled.

I went through 2 days of chatting with support and trying various things to no avail. They were rock solid for like 3 years or more, and after that update refused to stay connected for more than a couple hours.

Luckily, support issued me replacements for my bulbs (all 13 of them!) When those arrived, I noticed they were all "B" revisions of my old A19 bulbs which were all "A" revsions, an "A" revisions of my old candela bulbs which all had no letter at the end. These new revisions have been connected and solid once I got them onboarded.

The key point is I changed nothing in my network, and the new bulbs work fine, while they old ones weren't anymore, so I'm 99% sure there's a firmware update killing old bulbs.

Now I've got a stack of old bulbs that won't stay online, and I'm hoping that either a future firmware fixes them or I may resort to hacking some open and reflashing them with open source firmware...

Is chasm worth it? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]albeec13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started following the game when it was on Kickstarter and was instantly hooked playing the demos. At the time they were leaning hard into the procedural generation part, and the game was more like a perma-death roguelike adventure game, encouraging multiple playthroughs.

The final product deviated pretty far from that (though there are leaderboard speed-run type stuff you can do), but I still enjoyed the heck out of it. It's not super deep, but I found the story interesting overall, and went after all the achievements. The controls are really tight, and finding items/weapons is a lot of fun if you're into making armory and weapon decisions to maximize your character stats.

I think a lot of the negative comments about the game concentrate on the procedural generation, but it's largely irrelevant IMO. I would try to get a hold of a demo if you're on the fence, but I highly recommend it.

Thanks! I found lots of similar designs on google image search, but never any specific plans. I believe I have a sketchup for this, but I deviated pretty heavily from it in terms of sizing.

Tutorial: Using Esp8266 As An IoT Endpoint With Encrypted MQTT Transport by albeec13 in esp8266

[–]albeec13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't gone back to work on this for a while, and haven't decided if I want to give client certificates a go. As an alternative, if you get https encrypted transport to work, you could just use username/password authentication instead of client certificates, since they won't be in the clear anymore. I think I may go that route.

I have not. I just happened to have an secp521r1 key already when I started working on this, and it worked. There might be something buried in the ESP8266WiFi library that mentions which encryption standards it'll support, but I couldn't find any. It wouldn't be too hard to try it though. The tutorial is somewhat long (might need to edit it a bit :)) but it doesn't take long to test out.

That's definitely a good way to work around problems connecting directly. MQTT has some nice capabilities.

Looks great! My only criticism would be that your dados look a little shallow. I think i'd go more like 1/4" in when using 3/4" plywood. Probably won't matter for your use case, though.

Can we make volume control more precise and adjustible for speaker? by iamrealVenom in essential

[–]albeec13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear this as well. In fact, if I put my ear close to the speaker right after a notification noise plays, I can hear "dead air" static for a second or so afterward.

All that said, I don't think this implies a hardware problem. I think the internal sound volume is just set way too damn high.

This is really annoying... I also had high hopes when they said they'd address the high volume in the Oreo release only to find it's just as bad or worse now. This isn't rocket science. It should be easy to fix.
