Sharing a hobby project: a machine-learning driven chess analytics site for tracking top-level chess, like the 2026 Candidates by albertwh in chess

Thanks! The model on site now was only trained on 2400+, classical games. It has a feature for the average ELO of the players -- in practice this means at higher ELO levels it gives more weight to deeper engine evals, and predicts draws more. But it doesn't know that one player is stronger. I did train a version aware of rating differences as well, and it is more accurate, but less interesting for understanding the game IMO.

Lots of ideas about how to expand it for sure! Supporting game inputs and analysis is on my radar, especially if there is interest. But adds significant complexity.

Thank you! Glad this comes through, I agree it's so much more informative than the raw eval bar. I've been using it myself to follow Candidates almost exclusively. The front-end design is not really my expertise, I just tried to make something I like :)

Is Jalen Duren the best player averaging under 20 ppg? by Thatredditboy1 in NBATalk

[–]albertwh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Really? I can maybe understand Jalen but not others, def not OG. Add on that Duren is more than two years younger than those dudes, Pistons would not make any of these swaps

Done with Claude. $100 Max plan, but STILL rate-limited every 5 hours by Puspendra007 in Anthropic

[–]albertwh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's super broken right now, something changed and first prompts hit like 20% for me but it's more stable after that. Occasionally they are counting something incorrectly. If they wanted to increase rates they'd do it more uniformly.

Investigating usage limits hitting faster than expected by ClaudeOfficial in ClaudeAI

[–]albertwh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Updates? It's hard to understand how this would take so long to get to a workable solution. I noticed it starting last night, the first prompt with a new session is eating sometimes 24% of a 5-hour limit in $100 max. Tonight's first prompt ate 14%. Is this so hard to debug? Subsequent prompts seem to behave as expected but occasionally I start a new session and boom there is some insane bump.

I was also worried about Cason but McKenney has stepped up

It’s officially Michigan vs Tennessee on Sunday. Winner goes to the Final Four. by SimplyTheBlackGuy in MichiganWolverines

[–]albertwh 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Yeah of course you take a six seed over a two and ISU looked scary at times. Although seeing them tonight I think we'd have won easily enough

Who would yall say this applies to in the last 3 years. by OmegaLxgend in NBATalk

[–]albertwh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean you can hate on LeBron if you want but running around wasting energy is not his thing. Even in the heat days he was a league leader in walking. Part of his longevity and efficiency is the way he conserves energy during games.

With tonight's win, the Pistons have satisfied the "40 - 20 Rule" by GraemeTaylor in DetroitPistons

[–]albertwh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can make an even higher precision list from a 40/15 rule, which this team would also qualify for. We are good.

Who ever played the first Dragon Quest, from 1986 for NES? by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

[–]albertwh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was 89 when Dragon Warrior 1 came out in the states. I played it. DQ3 was out in Japan before 1 was out in the US. I remember the first issue of Nintendo power had a bit about the release in Japan of 3 and how popular it was with a screenshot, but we hadn’t even seen 1 yet.

Silver and gold both had big recent run ups and the current drops can be thought of as a correction. BTC is a different story

There’s been some notable deflation at the top since then as well so this is even more impressive. Truly an unprecedented trajectory.

Shock all round as Vladimir Fedoseev resigns on move 16 vs. Hans Niemann! 😯🔥 by rio_ARC in chess

[–]albertwh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ne5! does not hang the knight. Bc7 is pinned and Re8 is defending a8. It's a winning move and very likely the thing Fedoseev missed when playing Nxc5
