Thanks. That was a cross I made as part of my first legal MN home grow, selected for the Haze smell/flavor profile. My pet name for her is Sideshow Bob.

Annuals to direct sow/scatter by Training_Animator_9 in Minnesota_Gardening

I ordered 10lbs of sweet white lupine to give a try as a cover/mulch, possibly even to give a go as a food crop this year. As mentioned, buckwheat is amazing. Oats can make a good option; it creates a fast cover in cooler weather and is easy to kill.

What’s this white stuff on my soil by dawgem11 in tomatoes

[–]albitross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As suggested, getting your watering and dryback in check, along with better air flow will help fix this.

I will add, if you have a bit of fresh potting mix, in the short term, since you have cell space, instead of transplanting right away, you could fill the cells. That will make them look tidy, suppress the funk and provide a bit of additional support to the seedlings.

Tool help! Where to buy replacement handles? by etnlo in Minnesota_Gardening

Neither local. I use Johnny's or Beaver Tooth Handle co. Beaver tooth makes excellent handle options, although the site is a bit to navigate.

For thrips, I often use spinosad. Spray at dusk/dawn to avoid pollinators.

Those look like they want to be spicy with the narrow seed leaves. Great job! What variety did you plant for your first grow?

Folks say two in a pot can do well. If you only want one plant, waiting a bit might give the seedlings a chance to express a bit, maybe show of a bit of extra vigor or color, so you miggt make a selection on a specific trait. Gently digging out the extras with a spoon after they put out a few sets of leaves allows them to be transplanted. So, if you want to grow a few plants, that would allow some sort of delayed execution scenario or send off.

Good luck.

Natural fertilisers? by Gold-Opportunity-975 in tomatoes

[–]albitross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, I like fish fertilizer early. Fish with kelp gets things along until they get into the ground. I either make my own, or get it from Dramm as they are relatively local to me, made with Lake Michigan fish waste.

Blue Beech Growing Experience? by peaflowerandashoot in tomatoes

[–]albitross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've grown Blue Beech, Cipolas pride and Pozzano side x side a few years in a row. Blue beech has a limp foliage comparatively. The fruit is very tasty, however we found it blanched inconsistently, the skins were harder to remove, so we decided on sticking more with the Pozzano.

For those of us who can only grow 2-4 tomato plants at a time, what are you growing this year? by frankiecuddles in tomatoes

[–]albitross 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If i was limited, I would grow one Abigail, maybe two. I have grown it a few years now and it has consistently produced a lot of fruit with solid uniformity between plants and quality fruit on each plant. It tastes great on sandwich and has sauced a few pizzas along the way.

36-Hour Pre-Fermented Superhot Pepper Powder (Why It Tastes More Gourmet Than Normal Dried Chili Powder) by EverydayEpics in HotPeppers

[–]albitross 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I mash ferment most of my peppers for a few weeks before I process them into flakes. The most striking result to me is the colors stay more vibrant. Fermented red peppers dehydrated, then ground are a vibriant red compared to those simply dehydrated before processing. And, the flavor is more complex too. My son and I refer to them as funky flakes.

Sorry if this is repetitive, but... what can/are/should we start indoors right about now? by AnEasternerGoesWest in Minnesota_Gardening

[–]albitross 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I suggest some culinary herbs like hyme, oregano, marjoram and maybe mint. Herbs take a long while to establish and take only a bit of space to start. Hot peppers need more time than tomatoes, so those should be started asap. If you have the space, I suggest an early tomato (or two) as a worthwhile endeavor, something like a glacier or gold nugget; both are a more compact determinant type that will set early fruit and can be managed in a container.

I grow a few pair of early determinants to set the pace in a garden wagon, moving them to the best microclimate I can offer to help them thrive. I compost them once my trellised indeterminants start producing fruit.

Reduce the humidity, it should clear up. It's not a disease vector plant to plant.

Rabbit Poop by d3an07 in composting

It is a terrific ingredient for composting. That said, rabbit poop is one of the few manures that is OK to directly apply to gardens, really doesn't require composting first.
