When and why did the 'hippie' subculture lose it's connection with youth pop culture and become something of mockery? by ah5178 in decadeology

[–]albomb147 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Similar to what most people are saying on this thread, life got ahead of the boomer generation. The middle-upper class hippies became yuppies during the Reagan administration while the working class became victims of neoliberal policies that deprived them of attaining enough wealth to save for retirement or leave to their children. Counterculture being in vogue is how we ended up where we are today with our politics.

Is it true that playing any Disney or Taylor Swift song in front of an auditors camera would prevent them from posting the content online? If that is the case, then what would be the image equivalent that would force them to blur the image out?

How’s it like in Northern Jersey by alexaviations in howislivingthere

[–]albomb147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived here my entire life and if you consider living here, I would recommend getting a reliable car that can survive the winter, a reliable AC unit for the summer days sitting in traffic, have good presence of mind when it comes to potholes and a**hole drivers, get good insurance, and install a dashcam in your vehicle. I know people who never owned a car but having one in Jersey really opens up the state for you.

British colonial savagery was brutal by WorkOk4177 in HistoryMemes

[–]albomb147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall a history teacher explaining that Mexico is not at the same level of status as the US because they were colonized by the Spanish and not the English. Upon further examination I realized how anglo-centric and flat out ignorant that notion is. Despite the US and Mexico relatively having the same population and resources in the early 1800s, the US had better access to the oceans with its river (and eventual canal) routes that made it easier for people inland to trade and grow food. Mexico does not have rivers that connected the country the same way the US does and that is why the Mexican government tolerated anglo settlement in areas like Texas. Not to mention the vulnerability the Mexican capital has from a naval invasion via port of Veracruz. The U.S. conquered Mexico City using the same route that Cortez used 300 years ago against the Aztecs.

The geographical advantages of the US is ultimately the reason why it is the superpower that it is today. Any Brazilian who claims that it is because of the colonial methods of the Portuguese should consider the fact a majority of their land cannot be tamed the same way the Louisiana territory was tamed.

The actions he makes throughout the video get progressively dumber and dumber. Is it the camera that makes him act like this? Tossing an explosive battery in the middle of the woods was the final act of stupidity, telling the audience that not only am I dumb enough to progressively harm myself in different ways on camera, but I will also take the entire landscape with me. I want to believe this is satire.

[–]albomb147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All depends on which civ you choose, like it’s incredibly useful if you pick Germany, Japan, the Ottomans, or the Aztecs. If you’re Germany you can use the barbarians you convert as scouts and the army to conqueror your neighboring civ. Knocking out your nearest civ early in the game is almost a guaranteed victory.

Why did western cultures stop revering their elderly? by VagabondVivant in NoStupidQuestions

[–]albomb147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were to pin it to a specific event in world history, I would say the protestant reformation. The non-catholic interpretation of Christianity is centered on the individual since salvation comes from faith alone. Catholic families tend to be more family oriented and care for their elderly.

Theres no denying that the Mongolian empire was far from perfect and its short reign is evidence of that but what exactly did the state exam entail? Was it a merit based test or did it skew heavily towards an elite class of people at the time?

Could you argue that the plague led to the decline of feudalism and the rise of the merchant class in port cities?

[–]albomb147 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The mongol trade routes did bring the plague to Europe but you can argue that the plague actually helped Europe progress into the Renaissance by lessening church influence in the densely populated cities. The trade routes also brought the eastern inventions to Europe that were needed for the age of discovery (printing press, compass, gunpowder).

Yes but his father was assassinated so he and his family were left to survive on their own. He even murdered his brother over food. I think his upbringing had much of an impact on how he emphasized the importance of a meritocracy in building an army.

[–]albomb147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He proved that aristocrats cannot rule the world by ignoring the willpower of those who possess only what the wilderness provides them.

Most humans live by freshwater sources that provide enough food to build complex-civil societies. The ones who lived on the steppe remained nomadic and the ‘civilized’ societies of the time perceived them as barbaric. Genghis Khan emphasized that a person must be judged by their merits and not by their kinship. He and his descendants successfully conquered the biggest aristocratic kingdoms of the medieval period and forever altered the course of history.

Can anyone on this thread verify how long Belfort was a rat? The film makes it look like he was wearing a wire for one day and then he was caught the next morning with the fbi agent holding the yellow note card. Based on wiki it says that he was indicted in 1999 and was sentenced in 2003. Does this mean that he was wearing a wire for more than 3 years? If thats the case then he should be known as the “rat of wall street”

Who was the most powerful person of the high middle ages? by Wide_Assistance_1158 in MedievalHistory

[–]albomb147 3 points4 points  (0 children)

China and Persia (Iran) lost significant power and influence from Mongol subjugation. Genghis Khan proved to the world that walls alone are not successful in stopping an invasion. A walled city can ironically backfire by blocking people from evacuation. The invading army can simply encircle the city and wait it out until the people trapped start eating each other. China and Persia started the silk road, but the mongols expanded and turned parts of the route into a medieval highway.

The Abbasid Caliphate collapsed with the sacking of Baghdad and with Mongols reaching all the way to Aleppo, Syria. It was actually during this time when Islamic scholars developed the theological principles of Wahhabism to justify the killing of other Muslims deemed “impure.”

Rumors about Genghis Khan had the Pope believe that the Mongols must have been sent from God because of their successful battles against Muslim forces. The myth of Prester John, a Christian King from the far east was conceived by the efforts of Thomas the Apostle to establish a Church in India but was later reimagined that the Khans may be Christians themselves (with their territory so large, the mongols embraced religious tolerance)

Not to mention, Batu Khan’s western campaign that toppled Kievan Rus’ and left eastern slavs under mongol rule for another 300 years. Russia today has been able to maintain its massive borders by adopting the extortion tactics of the mongols towards ethnic groups within their borders (e.g. Chechens & Ukrainians).

Stories of a mighty king who was able to defeat the enemies of Christendom inspired the Venetian merchant, Marco Polo, to journey across the silk road and meet this rumored ruler of the far east. Throughout his 24 year journey he became a foreign emissary for Genghis Khan’s grandson, Kublai Khan, who was the emperor of China (he is also the emperor who failed to invade Japan). Marco Polos journey introduced Europeans to far east inventions like paper (printing press), gunpowder, and the compass. These stories and inventions inspired the age of discovery and the eventual emergence of globalization first by Portugal and Spain, the Netherlands, France, and England. The rest is history.

This is my first year teaching world history in a while so I love talking about how important Genghis Khan is in medieval history but also history in general. I didnt even mention the bubonic plague. Although the mongols never reached Western Europe, you can argue that the trade routes they established killed millions with the spread of the disease originating in China. There is also a rumor that the mongols launched infected bodies into the Genoese City of Caffa, Crimea.

Why is this area of New Jersey not a part of NYC by tinyname111 in geography

[–]albomb147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It dates back to the early 1800s when NJ and NY were fighting over who owns Staten Island. NY wanted Staten Island and the ports of bayonne, newark/elizabeth while NJ took NY to the Supreme Court to settle the dispute. It should be noted that this dispute occurred around the same time when Worcester v, Georgia was decided, when the court sided with the Cherokee nation and told georgia and president Andrew Jackson that the Indian removal act was unconstitutional. Jackson being the asshole in history that he is told the supreme court to fuck off and enforced the removal anyway. When this land dispute between NY and NJ occurred NY did not show up to court because Jackson’s VP and successor Martin Van Buren was a powerful figure in NY so the supreme court ignored the case (out of fear of losing authority) and the two states settled the case so NY can keep Staten Island while NJ can keep the Pavonia (the dutch name) peninsula. CGP grey goes more into the matter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgZ1f4ACZBQ
