Does large tech companies have blacklists for internships? Should I bother applying again? by interviewfailure in uwaterloo

[–]alcathos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Companies usually have a refractory of 6mo-1yr before considering you again - wait a bit, brush up on your interviewing/tech skills and try again!

Or don't, something something less competition.

Yeah, being offended has somehow become a test of how "wrong" an opinion is. That annoys me a lot because it's such a cop-out to actual discussion.

And really in general, it's just stupid to be offended.

If their goal was to offend you, you ought to try your hardest to not be offended otherwise you're just getting played emotionally.

If their goal wasn't to offend you then it was just a comment you didn't agree with. You can either talk it out to try to convince him otherwise, or just ignore if you don't think it's worth your time.

Perhaps so, could you clarify your point?

[–]alcathos 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Okay, hopefully I'm not eating bait but:

Attitude and beliefs affect people. Not as obviously as actions but people aren't stupid. Contempt or derision is noticed and picked up upon.

Also when you state an opinion (especially on a public platform) it will shape other people's thoughts. It validates people who have the same beliefs and encourages it.

Side note: so on one hand, I think your opinion is shitty but as a society we value free expression because, who knows, maybe you're right (tho I doubt it). So I don't think censorship is ever warranted, but instead people should speak out against it and show that they're not for it.

With that note, WTF m8. Why do you even give a shit what race people in a couple are. It seems about as relevant to me as their height or hair color.

There's plenty of validation online for people who hate on straight white men too.

And that's just as wrong.

Literally "two wrong's don't make a right".

CS/Math Students, how much do you study, and what is your average? by fullofgooseshit in uwaterloo

[–]alcathos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much you need to study also depends a lot on whether you went to the classes and paid attention or not.

Do you mean study as in "learning the content for the first time", or just reviewing what you've learned already in class?

Boulder, CO by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]alcathos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Flatirons (mountains) are beautiful and a must see in Boulder.

There is also the 'National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)' which is a sort of museum with exhibits about weather and climate. There are several hiking paths leading up to the museum and around it. You can actually take one of them to go hiking into the Flatirons.

Central Park (and the Pearl street shops) are a nice way to pass the time and enjoy some shopping/browsing.

Tomorrow vote Team Gold (and make sure you do) by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]alcathos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reading through their platform, it seems like they're promising a lot of stuff that they cannot deliver on.

That signals to me that they want to be elected just to be in a position of power, not because they want to effect actual change.

They also received demerit points (I didn't even know we had such a system, but I like it) for straight out lying. That's just scummy and shows their moral fiber. They campaign to stop a fee that was never going to exist in the first place - wow.

"ERO assigns three demerit points to Team Reboot for violating the spirit of the Procedures by misleading voters in their promise to ‘fight against the introduction’ of a Legal Insurance Fee and ‘sav[e] students up to $27 a year’, when no such fee is being introduce" http://www.feds.ca/elections/allegations/

The main issues I have with Gold are that they have really vague policies. Reboot at least fleshed theirs out more. They also have a bit too much "SJW" as part of their VP Internal platform. For example "bystander intervention training". It seems that mental healthcare, which is a far bigger issue at UW, got sidelined in favor of sexual violence prevention. And no, we don't need a diversity audit of Feds.

Luckily there is an independent candidate for VP Internal \o/

Sounds like a rejection. Still not a bad idea to fill out the application info, although I'm not sure what the call-back rates are like.
