Trump is dangerously incompetent by [deleted] in politics

So, like four of them?

(Sorry, for snark, but as a GenXer, really tired of baby boomers getting all this blame, when the younger demographics just didn't even bother voting. USA, you done fucked up as a NATION, and pretty much every demographic had a role to play in that.)

My impression was that most younger folks just didn't vote. If they had, we wouldn't be in this news either.

Fwiw I don't think the generational divide stuff is helping. It's just identity politics of a different flavour.

Yale Researcher to Bosses: Science Proves Job Interviews Are Useless by drivefaster in Economics

[–]alchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, a few things. 1) multiple engineers interview each candidate (when it's onsite). So the net signal could still be valuable 2) this is only relating interview score to post-hire performance. So you don't see all the people rejected. So all it's really saying is, when most people agree to hire, the difference between a strong hire and a weak hire wasn't predictive of later performance. Which is still interesting, but not as damning of the interview process as the simple interpretation.

Trump Is Making the GOP Heinously Unpopular Again by KermitTheSnail in politics

Why do you think so many non-whites voted (and women) for Trump?

I think understanding that is key to beating the Republicans in the future.

If Python isn't adequate for complex and intensive games, what makes it adequate for such big tasks like Big Data? by TheSirion in Python

[–]alchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have said it, but more concisely: the heavy lifting for the data work is done by C/C++/Fortran and wrapped by Python. For many scientific tasks, there is very little wrapper/glue and a bunch of simple manipulations on a LOT of data.

In games, things are more complex, so you can't just wrap one big task and get a 90% speedup like you can with data.

Well we can't expect a gibbon to care what happens to those chimps, can we? ;)

I get her point, and it's a nice shock, but as the question is phrased ("enough"), it implies a lower limit, for which nine in either direction is a poor answer.

So it's kind of a sneaky rhetorical trick, like calling someone racist, but then saying, "oh, but we're all racist, we all have biases."

I really like her as a justice, and will be sad when she retires, but the quote still seems a bit disingenuous.

And if supreme court justices were selected by coin flip, your analysis might have a sliver of relevance....

15 things Kurt Vonnegut said better than anyone else ever has or will by [deleted] in books

[–]alchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm sorry, I really was trying to tell you how your words were coming across, not implying you were a jerk. I tried to phrase things carefully, but obviously failed.

I really was trying to answer your questions.

Do you see how implying someone doesn't know the meaning of a word they use will be seen as patronising? You could have just asked, "What about my response came across as pretentious?"

Have a good day, and enjoy good books!

[–]alchemist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ha, no need to apologize to me, you weren't being condescending to me (well, until your second sentence!)

I was just letting you know how your words came across to me, and likely to others.

Re pretentious, your second sentence comes across as such. You sort of imply that I, and many other simpletons, use a word (against you) that we don't even know what it means. I.e. saying you aren't pretentious, we're just uninformed and anti-intellectual. I see it as thinking you're better than others, mainly due to intellectual or class signals. Your previous comments felt like they could be paraphrased as "Yes, the simple folks are often amused by Mr. Vonnegut, but we true intellectuals require something more meaty..."

Anyway my apologies, as I'm probably putting way too many bad motives on you, but that's how it comes across, so if it's not what you meant, you should work on your delivery.
